WCHA Thread V

There are day games where the sun will shine on spots on the ice, and arena staff will put up more of the temporary black curtains near the doors to the lobby.

Obviously the architect was California based. Nobody with an ounce of sense puts windows on the South wall of a hockey rink.

LaBahn does have south facing windows, but it's a narrow bank and the glass is frosted so the light is softly filtered. Maybe WI architects are smarter than MN ones.

if they are so smart, how come you only got one set of shidderz?

BTW, that may be another reason you don't get tournament games

While I have several issues with LaBahn, there are men's/women's bathrooms on both sides of the arena. Even when the place is sold-out, I've never had to wait long (if at all) to go. Lines for concessions and will-call are another issue, but not bathrooms.

the architects were from California and morons. It could have been worse, the U has a tin can designed by Frank Gehry.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Do school bands come to the wcha f4?
Wisconsin band went to Grand Forks last year and have gone when in Ridder in the past.
I don't remember if the Gopher band traveled to the 2012 Final Faceoff in Duluth, but they have not gone to Grand Forks or Bemidji. They did go to the tournament in Rochester in 2001, but they went back to Minneapolis between the semifinal game Friday and the 3rd-place game Saturday.

Final Score From Friday, February 19th
Ohio State 3
North Dakota 1

Sadistic Shots Sink (former) Sioux
OK, the shots weren't the product of meanness; they were generated by Dani Sadek. So maybe they were Sadekistic Shots? More details on the goals below.

Up front, let's emphasize that a good North Dakota team was difficult to beat. The newly named Hawks had plenty of fight in them. But on this night, the Buckeyes were just a little stronger and a little more determined than the visitors. In the end, the Buckeyes proved to be the tougher nut to crack.

EP: Phone Home
Nice moment in the handshake line when Lauren Boyle and Charly Dalhquist found each other. The two Eden Prairie High School teammates shared a hug. No bad Blood in this handshake line.;)

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Julia McKinnon and Claudia Kepler
Julia and Claudia teamed up on the empty-netter that sealed the deal. The unselfish McKinnon could have easily netted the puck herself, but instead slid the puck into the slot for Kepler. Claudia calmly deposited the puck into the empty UND goal cage. She now has 13 goals on the season. Tonight's just might have been the easiest. But it was still a very satisfying tally. Kudos also go out to Lauren Spring, who started the play by breaking up a UND rush at the defensive blue line.

North Dakota Honorable Mention: (tie)Meghan Dufault and Amy Menke
Meghan is the default option for the UND offense; she brings lots of skill and energy to the rink. From behind the endline, Amy hit Meghan in stride, putting a perfect pass on the tape. Dufault wheeled into the slot and fired the puck home. Not many defenses are going to stop that play. And BTW, Dufault won 17 of 28 opportunities in the face-off circle, making North Dakota just that much tougher to defeat.

#3 Star: Maddy Field, Ohio State
On the game's first goal, Sadek fired an evil drive from the top of the right circle. She was gunning for the upper left hand corner of the net. Somehow the puck hit the half moon from the top, and bounced crazily back into the slot. From there it was a battle of strength and will between Maddy and the UND defense. Maddy won; getting just enough wood on the puck to get it over the goal line. It was a huge breakthrough goal, ending a 0-0 tie that had endured for most of two periods.

#2 Star: Dani Sadek, Ohio State
The Field goal was subjected to video review, and properly so. But when the call went the home team's way, it lit a fire under the Buckeyes. Less than 3 minutes later, Sadek launched another heartless missile at the UND net. This time Dani caught a little break as the puck glanced off a Hawk defender, altered course and flew by the startled Amsley-Benzie. Keep shooting, Dani!

#1 Star: Alex LaMere, Ohio State
Alex had 31 Saves on 32 North Dakota shots. Of equal importance, she exerted a lot of control over the game by making timely decisions to freeze the puck. And yes, there were definitely some "OMG, how'd she save that one" moments in this game. One particularly dangerous shot seemed destined for the five hole, but somehow LaMere got down in the butterfly and corralled the puck. Now playing with a great deal of confidence and composure, it's been a pleasure to watch Alex mature as a Goalie.

Next Up: Rematch with North Dakota at 4:07 PM Saturday. Don't Miss Senior Night!

OK, I always enjoy your recaps but that is a winner right there!

Re: WCHA Thread V

What a great series by UM-UW. What a great rivalry! I love how fast it is and how it demands of the players things they don't usually experience throughout the season. Wisconsin is so relentless and disciplined. The Gophers so dangerous and resilient.

I think it is such benefit for the players that they have this rivalry. There is a lot of respect there. A lot of hugging after the game between the players from each team considering the intensity of the battle.

I think it helped that (a) the score was close and (b) the game didn't appear to be as chippy. The two might be related. Either way, the handshake line didn't appear to be as friendly on Friday.

I really hope the series between the teams doesn't deteriorate from the hard-nosed but fast and clean that it has been.

Final Score From Saturday, February 20th

Ohio State 2

Senior Night Surge Gives UND Tall Mountain To Climb.
They Do.
The Buckeyes hit the ice highly motivated for Senior Night, and bagged two goals in the first 2:44. That left the Hawks with an arduous task in front of them. The one thing they had going for them was that they had almost an entire game to mount the comeback. A took a good while, but UND persevered -- tying then passing the Buckeyes. From there, they played very well with the lead. Maintaining offensive pressure, the Green and White drew two penalties in the closing minutes. That largely precluded any last minute heroics by the Scarlet and Gray.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie) Lauren Boyle; Alexa Ranahan; Dani Sadek and Cara Zubko
During last year's Stanley Cup playoffs, an injury to Michael Rozsival forced the Chicago Blackhawks to rely almost exclusively on four defensemen: Keith, Seabrook, Oduya & Hjalmarsson. An injury to Bryanna Neuwald put the Buckeyes in a rather similar predicament. Now I'm not quite ready to claim the Stanley Cup for the Buckeye Women. But Boyle, Ranahan, Sadek and Zubko also responded to the adversity very well. A lesser group might have worn down. But the core four of the Buckeye 'D' seemed to thrive on the extra ice time. Tonight was no exception. Well done; I'm proud of all 4 of you. One more thing: Alexa's first goal of the season was certainly a nice senior moment.

#3 Star: Layla Marvin, North Dakota
Late in the first period, a breakout pass from Marvin gave UND its first window of opportunity. That sent the dangerous pair of Meghan Dufault and Amy Menke out on a rush that can be viewed as the turning point of the game.

Late in the second period, Layla gained possession in the defensive slot. From there she launched a majestic lob pass that led directly to the GWG.

#2 Star: Lauren Spring, Ohio State
A highlight reel rush from Spring gave the Buckeyes their two goal lead. Dani Sadek started the play by directing the puck to Melani Moylan at the Buckeye blue line. Though under intense pressure from the UND forecheck, Melani somehow steered the puck precisely to Lauren on the opposite wing. From there, Spring drove to the net like a thunderous locomotive. On arrival, she shifted into finesse mode. Cutting across the slot, she smartly pulled the puck to her backhand, then shelfed a backhander into the upper right hand corner. This one had a wow factor; it was one of the best goals of the season.

#1 Star: Meghan Dufault, North Dakota
Safe choice, but I sincerely believe the correct one. Meghan had the primary assist on the goal that turned the game. Later, her successful breakaway gave UND their first lead of the weekend; a lead they would not relinquish. On the GWG she patiently beat the Buckeye keeper with a low shot to the short side. Fittingly the game ended when Dufault broke up a final desperate OSU rush, then retreated back to her own zone with the puck to kill the 10 seconds that remained. Another complete effort by Meghan Dufault.

Next Up: WCHA Playoffs. With the Buckeyes' Home Schedule now complete, my Stars for 2015-16 have all been awarded. Note, though, that I am planning one more 3 Stars Post before transitioning to the off-season. Once the curtain drops on the playoffs, I'll take a retrospective look at the year -- in honor of the Seniors.

Re: WCHA Thread V

KTDC said: "Did anybody see why Milica McMillen was called for roughing after the Sarah Nurse goal?

You can't see it on the telecast. The announcers didn't notice anything until after play resumed and the Gophers were shorthanded. They never questioned it at all. "

I didn't see it either, nor do I believe the ref did either, here is why:
I've seen this happen before, in a scrum somebody's stick winds up in the refs face or hits someone, the ref grabs it. He didn't see the offense, he just knows some player is minus a stick, and said stick was where it shouldn't be. So he holds the stick until he sees which player doesn't have a stick. This player is given a penalty.
Although I don't know if the stick was Milica's or even if that is why she was given the penalty, I do know the ref had somebody's stick and was looking to see who it belonged to, and it wasn't because he was being a nice guy and wanted to be sure it was returned to the owner.
What sucks about this is in this situation, and I've seen it happen before, is that the ref doesn't know if somebody knocked it out of the players hands or the player was indeed the guilty party. Refs are supposed to call what they see, not what they think might have happened.

Speaking of sticks, why wasn't a penalty called on the Badger who swatted the Gophers stick (that was laying on the ice in the slot area to the left of the goal) to behind the goal to the right? This is a interference penalty, it caused the Gopher player to retrieve it and be out of the play. Meghan Lorence was called for this last year at UMD, maybe people here have a point that refs are reluctant to call penalties on Gopher opponents.

Re: WCHA Thread V

I did not see the play on the penalty called on #13 as it happened. I looked at the video later and could not see it there either. Your explanation may be correct, especially with Langley or Ludwig involved.

I did see the stick swatting incident right in front of me. I and one of the Gopher parents behind me yelled interference right away. I'm not sure, but I think Langley/Morrison was near the play and was either looking up ice or saw it and just ignored it. I'll try to find the play on video. L/M certainly called the penalty shot fast enough later in the game.
