WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Friday, November 6th
Bemidji State 2
Ohio State 1

We Didn't Lose; We Just Ran Out Of Time
That's an old Football saying from back in the day. But OK. If we have to be sticklers for accuracy, then yes: The Buckeyes lost tonight's game. But just as surely they ran out of time, as a spirited OSU comeback fell just short.

Full credit to the Bemidji defense, who held the Buckeyes largely at bay for the first 56 minutes. But a late goal, a strong power play and a 6 on 5 situation added up to 4 minutes of intense Buckeye pressure. In the end, a determined Beaver defense circled the wagons and held on for the win.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Bemidji State Honorable Mention: (tie)Kaitlyn Tougas and Bailey Wright
Bemidji's top set of forwards was the most dangerous line on the ice tonight. Here we honor the Wings. Kaitlin's strong forecheck created the game's opening goal. Bailey bagged the eventual game-winner on a rebound in the slot. Either player could have received a star, had one been available. As is so often the case: Too many standouts, not enough places on the podium.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Julia McKinnon
A forward for her first two seasons at Ohio State, Julia now patrols the Buckeye blue line. She's doing a nice job learning the craft. Yes, she spent two minutes in the box tonight. But it was a smart penalty; taking the opposing player down prevented a breakaway and a high quality scoring chance. The ensuing PK was successful; the resulting momentum swing actually launched the Buckeye comeback.

Overall the Buckeye defense was effective tonight, limiting BSU to just 17 shots on goal. The whole 'D' Corps played well; tonight we'll let Julia represent the group.

#3 Star: Ivana Billic, Bemidji State
And we'll let Ivana represent the Bemidji 'D' Corps. Strong and confident, Billic and Company largely controlled their half of the ice.

Of equal importance was her role on the GWG. When a Buckeye defender attempted to clear the zone, Billic held the puck in at the right point. Her stiff shot on net led to the Wright goal. Well, at least from the Bemidji perspective, it was the right goal.

#2 Star: Dana Rasmussen, Ohio State
Assisted by Cara Zubko and Dani Sadek Dana's goal finished off an end-to-end rush. Her inspirational blast ignited the wild finish.

#1 Star: Hanna Moher, Bemidji State
Hanna's top shelf goal just 2:28 into the game set the tone for the entire night. Though most of the game was a very even battle, having to chase that early goal proved to be pretty frustrating for the Buckeyes.

Dangling; cycling; passing; shooting -- The Moher line put on a fine show. Accounting for both BSU goals, they were the difference makers tonight for the Beavers.

Next Up: The Saturday Afternoon Rematch. Face-Off at 2:07 PM EST. Football Saturday Parking. Again. Be prepared for the $15 fee. But as a Gopher fan graciously pointed out back in October, our free admission and free program policies means that $15 gets you the full series. When you look at it that way, it's not a bad deal at all! See you tomorrow at the Ice Rink.

Re: WCHA Thread V

BSU was without Stephanie Anderson and lost Kristin Huber to injury early last night, so it is tough for any team if it is minus two top-six forwards. I realize OSU has had to do without people all season, but in the short term, it can be equally difficult when you lose a player that you normally count on.

When a team finally does get a shot through against the Beavers, then it has a 1st-team All-American goalie to deal with.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Beavers are now in 2nd place, making next weekend against the 3rd place Gophers even more important.

7-2-1 on 17 goals!

Looking at all 10 wins (7 in conference and 3 non-conference), they have scored 25 goals but, more importantly, only yielded 8 with no more than 1 in each game.

Re: WCHA Thread V

This week in the WCHA

Minnesota State @ St. Cloud State

Wisconsin @ Minnesota-Duluth

Bemidji State @ Minnesota

Ohio State @ North Dakota

Bold Prediction: Shutout streak ends!

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Saturday, November 7th
Bemidji State 3
Ohio State 1

Different Script, Same Result
Except for an empty-netter, Saturday's score matched Friday's. And yet the games were rather different.

Certainly goals were hard to come by both days. But on Saturday OSU started fast, breaking through the stingy BSU defense and getting lots of shots on the Beaver net. Early on, the Buckeyes held a 7-1 advantage in shots. At the end of the 1st Period, the edge was 12-5. After 2 periods, the margin was 27-14. Still, despite all that shot production, the score remained deadlocked 1-1. You've likely already guessed who the #1 Star is.

In the 3rd Period, roles slowly reversed as the Beavers picked up steam. For last stanza, Bemidji owned the SOG stat 11-6. No late surge for the Buckeyes this time.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Bemidji State Honorable Mention: (tie)Lauren Miller and Alexis Joyce
Miller and Joyce combined on the game's first goal. Dangling over the top, Joyce's initial shot attempt was blocked. Undeterred, Alexis corralled the rebound and dangled some more. From there a dynamic cross-slot pass found Miller, who slammed the puck into the upper left hand corner. On this day the 1-0 lead only lasted only 10 minutes. But giving up the first goal to Bemidji is always a bad idea.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Lauren Boyle
Strong game, both with and without the puck. 4 shots taken: no goals against on Lauren's watch. When I gain confidence in a defender, I describe it as a "feeling of well being." I'm starting to get that feeling when Boyle is patrolling the blue line. More please.

#3 Star: (tie)Kendall Curtis, Ohio State and Julianna Iafallo, Ohio State
Face-off to the left of the Bemidji net. Iafallo, on Right Wing, cuts behind the face-off dot as the puck is dropped. Curtis wins the draw; Iafallo gathers in the puck and carries to the corner. Kendall strides toward the net; Julianna's pass is right on the tape. The Curtis blast nails the upper left hand corner. Top shelf goals seemed to be the order of the day this weekend, and this one was a beauty.

#2 Star: Kaitlyn Tougas, Bemidji State
Constant playmaking by Tougas in this contest. On the GWG, she carried the puck from her own end all the way to the OSU net. Her challenging shot left a juicy rebound for Emma Terres to finish. Next, Kaitlyn capped off the scoring with the ENG. Oh, BTW: Bemidji had a goal waived off; the puck was directed into the net with a high stick. Tougas started that play too. A full 60 minutes of all-around effort and production earns Kaitlyn the #2 Star.

#1 Star: Brittni Mowat, Bemidji State
ARM's post prior to Saturday's game proved to prophetic. If you're fortunate enough to get by the Beaver defense, your work has only just begun. Brittni is extremely calm and confident in the net. Mowat makes adjustments quite efficiently; she's seemingly always in position. Very sure-handed with the glove. A formidable keeper indeed. Brittni's 32 save performance more than qualifies for top honors.

Next Up: Road trip to North Dakota. Should be a fine series. Go Bucks!

Re: WCHA Thread V

BSU can make you feel that way and it is sort of true. If you can play long enough you will get chances & they can't block them all. A very frustrating team to play.
True indeed.

The prophetic statement mentioned in the 11/7 Three Stars.

Re: WCHA Thread V

“More teams aren’t calling us Bermidji,” Joyce said. “I don’t know where they get the ‘r’ from in our name, but I heard that a lot. A lot of people legit thought that was our name, and I was like, ‘No, there’s no ‘r’ in our name; I don’t know where you see that.’

She should know that Easterners insert an 'r' into all kinds of words that don't have one. ;)
