WCHA Thread V

Re: WCHA Thread V

A classless act from top to bottom.
I can't agree with that. Someone like Dufault is a skill/finesse player. I'd never use any of cheap, dirty, or classless to describe her. Krzyzaniak is as hard-nosed as they come; a typical Canadian player, she'll take it right to the limit and not back down. But if she was on my team, I'd love her. There have been UND players over the years who IMO may have deserved some of the adjectives you use, but I'd never pin labels like that on the whole team, or any roster as a whole.

Re: WCHA Thread V

I, too, would disagree with the UMD characterization based on last weekend's games. The second game in particular had, I think, 1 penalty called - and a couple of the penalties in the first game were Doocy at his worst. Truly awful. Both teams skated hard, went for the puck, and played clean. There are girls on both teams who were (are) tough competitors and who don't back down when challenged. We love that about women's college hockey. Heck, (without checking) I think Mankato might even have more foreign nationals on their team than the 'Dogs this year

Re: WCHA Thread V

but I'd never pin labels like that on the whole team, or any roster as a whole.

But I would, based on simple observation. This behavior manifests itself in only a few places and it repeats in those places. Why do we not see the cheap, dirty hits from MSU, BSU, Wis, MN for instance? What makes UND particularly and UMD often the source? I believe UMD might have eliminated a source (we'll see). It mat not be fair to paint the whole team but there is something wrong with programs that fall into this type of play repeatedly.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Got back late to Minnesota from Columbus because of a few Presidential site visits after the hockey games last weekend.

First of all a big thank you to both osualum86 and pgb-ohio for the advice on parking. It was a great help. We did not mind the $15 charge for parking on Saturday which was all we paid for the 2 games. Even the program was free. As for the arena, the hot chocolate and pretzel's were better than those at Ridder. Everything else, not even close. A parent of one of the OSU players told us that the OSU men used to play there as well. Hard to believe. It reminded me of some of the bad high school arenas I was in back in the day.

As for the game, I would have sworn that the tying goal by OSU in the 1st period on Friday would be waved off by the officials because of a hand pass from a OSU player kneeling on the ice in the pileup in front of the Gopher net to the OSU player out in front. It wasn't even reviewed. Did anybody else see it or was I imagining it and temporarily distracted by the highly entertaining 2 year old doing laps in front of me with his father. I guess I shouldn't complain because the 3 possible goals that were reviewed all went in favor of the Gophers. I didn't know that Brad Frost could whistle that loud when he called Krissy Morrison over to the Gopher bench to ask her to review a disallowed goal. Did it hit a leg and go in as Hannah Brandt seemed to be indicating to the other referee? I thought Jenny Potter remained rather stoic throughout a pretty dreadful weekend for her team. She has her work cut out for her.

Brook Garzone! Game winning goals both games and is one tough and durable hockey player. Watching her (pun not intended) reminded me of John Cameron Swayze's ads for Timex.

Finally, this trip completed a hockey bucket list for us to have now been to a Gopher away game at each of their WCHA opponents. Nowhere have we met more friendly or helpful fans than in Columbus. We had just arrived at the parking lot next to the arena for Friday's game and pulled into a handicap spot and a Ohio fan came running up to us and said, "I see you're from Minnesota and I just want you to know that the parking is free here today, but tomorrow you'll have to pay $15 because of the football game." On Saturday as we walked through the parking lot to the arena, a OSU football tailgating fan came up to us and said, "Hey Minnesota, are you here for the football game?" We explained and he said, "Women's hockey? Well, God bless you for that." We ran into him again after the game and he told us he had gone into the arena and watched the 2nd period and that's one "heckuva" hockey team you've got there. He also told us he wished he had a couple of extra tickets to give us so we could watch the football game, but that the band and the team would be marching by shortly on their way to the stadium and it's quite the sight! Nice folks!

is it Williams/Mariucci Arena bad or the Old StP auditorium bad?

The StP auditorium is where they held the state HS hockey tournament before Met Center was built, calling any other arena "the barn" indicates the talker never was there because it truly was a barn, being home to the circus and similar events, the place was dusty and gritty, after leaving you wanted to take a shower, Williams/Mariucci was hospital clean in comparison. If there was ever a worse venue, other than outside in January, I never experienced it.

BTW, the StP auditorium was even worse than the State Fair auditorium where they held the early Girls HS tournaments.

I'd compare OSU arena more to Mankato State's than the ones mentioned, but maybe not quite as "plush" as Mankato. We forgot our Gopher blanket Friday night and just about froze our ..... off. It could never be as cold as it was on Eveleth's metal seats though. OSU arena needs a paint job on the boards and new plexiglass for starters. Nice people and nice trip though, especially #5's dad from Ontario who sat next to us. Worse part of the trip was staying at the Days Inn. The elevator broke down four times while we were there. It belongs on that TV show, hotels from he.., or whatever it's called.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Picks for the week!
Gophers, Badgers, Buckeyes sweep.
Huskies split with North Dakota! After scoring a bunch 12or 13 vs Merrimack, the huskies were out classed the last 2 weekends
It only gets a bit easier this weekend, but I feel like they will find enough offence too win one close game, 3-2 or 2-1. After a slow start , Katie Fitsgerald has found her game, she was solid vs the Badgers, that's key, as it looks like Ms Crosby is not quite ready to be a div 1 starter .
Looking forward too visiting the Herb Brooks centre
For the first time this year!
Go Huskies!!!

how about aluminum benches in January? that's what the outdoor classic at the Bank was. who in the world thought aluminum benches for an outdoor football stadium was a good idea?. even a 40 degree day is going to suck the heat out of you, Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat

at least Williams/Mariucci had wood seats

You're welcome on the parking advice. If you come back, let us know. We'll give you some tips on hotels and so on. I would have steered you away from the Days Inn (referring to your follow-up post) had I known.

As for the Ice Rink, the various renovations have upgraded it from shabby to functional. It dates from the 1960's and it shows. The comparison to the plainer local high school rinks is fair. Agree that at the D-1 level, its closest cousin is the Mankato rink. And yes, Men's Hockey played there through 1998.

Brook Garzone! Game winning goals both games and is one tough and durable hockey player. Watching her (pun not intended) reminded me of John Cameron Swayze's ads for Timex.
Didn't notice that! Good for Brook. Should have given her at least an Honorable Mention for Saturday's game.

Very happy to hear of your positive experience. As is well known, the sportsmanship in the OSU/Michigan Football rivalry can be stunningly bad. But the rest of the time we really are good, solid Midwesterners. Glad you experienced the good side.

Wisconsin has 5 short handed goals this season in 22 pk's (1 goal given up). On the other hand they have 5 power play goals in 22 power plays!

Gophers have clearly been monsters with the man advantage but I'd like to see them tighten up the PK a bit.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Friday, October 23rd
Ohio State 5
Minnesota State 3

Buckeyes Take Game One With Olympian Effort
Spotting the opposing team a two goal lead is generally a bad idea. But what the heck. At the coaching level, this was a clash between olympic titans. Why not add a few extra steps to the journey?

In the end, the olympian quest was successful. The Buckeyes scored five of the next six goals to overcome the shaky start.

But you know what? Maybe the start wasn't all that shaky. Truth be told, the Buckeyes carried the play from the beginning and had a significant zone time advantage. Consider the period-by-period shot stats:

1st: Buckeyes 10, Mavericks 4
2nd: Buckeyes 11, Mavericks 5
3rd: Buckeyes 14, Mavericks 3
Game Totals: Buckeyes 35, Mavericks 12

Pretty clear pattern there. Credit the Mavericks for making some great individual plays to make a real game of it. But the Buckeyes earned this victory.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Minnesota State Honorable Mention: Anna Keys
Anna stood out in many ways. Her hard blast created the scoring opportunity on the game's first goal. On the Power Play, she repeatedly held in the puck at the point. On one PP opportunity I literally lost count. Four times? Five times? Also strong on 'D,' she finished the game at +1, despite her team's defeat.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Alexa Ranahan
Alexa found her way onto the scoresheet with two assists. We'll also let her represent the hustling Buckeye defense, which largely kept the Mavericks away from the Buckeye net.

#3 Star: Hannah Davidson, Minnesota State
Remember those great individual plays I mentioned? Hannah's was the best. Third period on the PK, trailing 3-2. Davidson stripped the puck from a Buckeye defender, creating her own breakaway. Hannah's shot was a thing of beauty; a shelfed backhander into the upper right hand corner. On another front, Davidson was 12 of 18 in the face-off circle.

#2 Star: Maddy Field, Ohio State
Maddy scored the first Buckeye goal, and it was huge. Crashing the net from the right side, she found the five hole to get the Buckeyes back on track. Without Maddy's goal, who knows? Maybe the Mavs circle the wagons and grab the win.

#1 Star: Claudia Kepler, Ohio State
Claudia's blossoming into a true power forward. Her two goals from close in were both go-ahead goals. Her assist came from winning a battle along the side boards. Kepler's three point night led all scorers.

On the GWG, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Dani Sadek's brilliant end-to-end rush. Escaping the Buckeye zone with a brilliant spin move at the blue line, Sadek carried the puck all the way behind the Mankato net. When Dani emerged on the other side, Claudia was controlling the slot, waiting for the pass. Accurate pass, successful shot. Play of the game. The goal gave the Buckeyes a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Next Up: The Saturday Afternoon Rematch. Face-Off at 1:07 PM EST. Remember the early start!

Re: WCHA Thread V

I would be very surprised if Minnesota-Duluth doesn't score at least one or two when they host the Badgers November 13th & 14th.

Re: WCHA Thread V

Final Score From Saturday, October 24th
Ohio State 4
Minnesota State 0

Big Bang Theory
Explode out of the tunnel. Score 4 goals in the first 11:26. Then spend the rest of the afternoon slowly evolving toward victory. Dorky glasses optional.

It's one way to win a hockey game. And the Buckeyes did just that Saturday, completing the sweep with a shutout.

The TV show of the same name will likely be available on re-runs for years to come. Re-runs of this hockey game? Yes, please.

The 3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Minnesota State Honorable Mention: Leila Kilduff
She tucks her jersey in. A major pony tail hides the number. Catch a glimpse of that number and it's the unassuming #13. Don't know if she's shy or gregarious in person, but it's almost as if she wants to play in obscurity. Sorry Leila, but I noticed. You do lots of things well. Importantly, you weren't on the ice for any of the Buckeye goals. Strong game by the freshman defender. Welcome to the WCHA, and best of luck during your four years in Mankato.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Alex LaMere
Obviously Alex will face sterner tests than 17 shots for a full game. But LaMere was 17 for 17, earning her first shutout as a Buckeye. And the Mavericks certainly put up some challenging shots on their power play. Congratulations, Alex!

#3 Star: Lauren Boyle, Ohio State
A strong game on 'D' and a hat trick of assists for the freshman from Eden Prarie, MN. Yes, despite a recent fumble by the PA Annnouncer, we're well aware you're from Minnesota, not Michigan. We also know that Mankato is just down the road from EP on US 169. But you chose Columbus, and we're glad you did. Welcome to Ohio State.

#2 Star: Dani Sadek, Ohio State
Set up the GWG on Friday. Scored the GWG Saturday on a beautiful Schott. Sadek also played an integral role in keeping the Mavs off the Schott Chart. Awesome weekend for Dani.

#1 Star: Lauren Spring, Ohio State
OSU won Saturday's game with an explosion, and Lauren was da bomb. Lauren simply took over the ice sheet during the magical 11:26 with two goals and an assist. Kudos also go out to linemates Julianna Iafallo (two assists) and Dana Rasmussen.

Along with two others, Spring led all players with a +2 in the plus/minus. The others? Why the other Stars, of course: Sadek and Boyle.

Next Up: The Buckeyes have a Bye on Halloween Weekend. The homestand continues on November 6th & 7th against Bemidji State. See you back at the Ice Rink.

Re: WCHA Thread V

The week ahead in the WCHA:

St. Cloud State @ Bemidji State

Wisconsin @ Minnesota State

Minnesota @ North Dakota

Beavers in need of a big rebound

Friday is "Pack the Ralph" in Grand Forks. I like "Wreck the Ralph" better. On NoDak site schedule, Friday shows as Midco SN covered but unfortunately does not appear on my cable guide schedule...:(
