Re: WCHA Thread IV

Things that make you go hmmmm...

Penn St. bests an opponent by a three goal margin. That same opponent battles Ohio State to a deadlock at two.

Hmmmm...

It was our first game, whereas it was their second game. I wouldn't read too much into it. We lost our exhibition game last season, then went up to Erie and beat perennial Frozen Four team Mercyhurst the next weekend. Coach Nate played all three goalies and every player on the roster. He certainly treated it like an exhibition game, as he should have. Not going to get me to go "hmmmm" until we start playing the games that actually count. Maybe you're just trying to get a rise out of Ohio State fans. :D

Re: WCHA Thread IV

I think the idea of scheduling an exhibition against a cupcake is to not only get work for all your goalies and to experiment with various lines and D pairings, it's to get a victory and build confidence for when they play a real team

I'm OK with " hmmmm." My first thought would be the Penn State must be coming along nicely, and it makes the January OSU/PSU series a bit more intriguing. As for the Buckeyes individually, it's not unfair to ask if we underachieved a bit and if there's an underlying reason. Taking the last two exhibition results as a pair, someone could reasonably wonder if OSU is treating those match-ups more like scrimmages than NCAA games. Another theory might be that this particular group of players isn't at their best after only a week's worth of practices -- or whatever the actual number of practices is.

Personally I don't really have a definitive theory and probably won't bother to settle on one. But this sort of question is fair game, especially for neutral fans.

My reply to brookyone notwithstanding, I agree: I wouldn't read too much into it.

Every time you lace 'em up you want to put on a performance you can be proud of. If that's the essence of what you're saying, then I agree. But in a "friendly" competition, where neither the score nor the stats count, those things really aren't the top priorities. This isn't analogous to non-conference college football where the results matter for post-season aspirations. It's more like spring training baseball. Does anyone care who had the best record in the Grapefruit League? Does anyone even remember?

This last point is a total non-issue. The Buckeyes and Huskies will have (at least) 4 head-to-head meetings to settle bragging rights for 2014-15. Transitive results are thankfully irrelevant. One of the more important benefits of the double round robin schedule...

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Pgb, I had tried to reply and apparently I had gotten logged out at some point. I guess it's fair to question a tie/shootout win in an exhibition game. My opinion is that these exhibition games are treated as scrimmages. If we were really concerned with the scoreboard, we would have shortened the bench, which I wouldn't necessarily agree with. I think the coaches are doing the right thing here getting all the girls some ice time. If we split or get swept by UNH next weekend, I might say "hmmmm". I really like our team. The D is solid, which will help whoever emerges as our starting goaltender. All the girls can really skate and are flying all over the ice. They just need to get a few more pucks in the net and they will be fine. We had 46 SOG Sunday but only scored 2 goals. That is correctable. I think this season's freshman class is special and am really looking forward to watching them develop in the coming seasons.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

Agreed. Hoping and presuming Kari Schmitt will be back next weekend; I don't know why she missed Sunday's tilt. Obviously with Kari in the lineup the D corps is even more solid.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

as long as you are happy with a tie, that's all that matters

I'm going to predict a Badger loss to the Dawgs this weekend, wish I could be there, it should be an interesting weekend

In a game that doesn't count, the scoreboard doesn't really matter to me. When the games start to count, then I won't be happy with ties, as I am sure the team will not be happy with them either.

According to Coach Nate, Kari got a little nicked up at the USA Hockey National Festival, so he held her out. She should be good to go this weekend. Hey, Pgb, what did you think of the Jessica Dunne DQ? I missed it because I actually went across the street to GetGo to get the wife and I some beverages (concession stand wasn't open for the exhibition game). I came back in the door just as she was making her way to the locker room. I thought, dang, she got ejected. Mrs 86 said it was crap. She said the girl was up against the boards and Jessica was in the process of stopping. She hit the girl and she went against the boards, then she fell to the ice and started rolling around like she was hurt. Then after Jessica got tossed, she hopped right up and skated to her bench. I hope this doesn't become a pattern with opponents flopping when Jessica hits them. She is 6' tall, so she is going to be bigger than a lot of players she goes against. Anyway, just wanted to get your take on it because I talked to several people who thought it was a horsecrap call. I felt bad for her. First collegiate game and she gets tossed. I am sure there will be brighter days ahead for her. I think she is going to be a special player here.

Re: WCHA Thread IV

As a preliminary matter, it was a Game Misconduct, not a DQ.

Can't really say if the Western player embellished or not. Could be.

Trouble is, the Hitting From Behind rule is a safety thing, and it's been a point of emphasis for years. The best advice for players is don't give the refs an opportunity to make such a call; don't push the limits on that particular rule.

Probably not the reply you were expecting. And maybe it's just me. But when it comes to Hitting From Behind, my feeling is we err on the side of caution.

Re: Unofficial Three Stars of the Game

Re: Unofficial Three Stars of the Game

Final From Friday, October 3rd
Ohio State 1
New Hampshire 0

New Beginnings
New Season. New Start Time. New Freshman Class. New Goalie. Opponent? New Hampshire, Naturally.

The Buckeyes' 2014-15 season got off to a fine start with a 1-0 win over the visiting Wildcats. It was a night for both defenses to shine. Odd man rushes were few and far between. Blocked shots were common; blocked centering passes were plentiful. Both PKs were perfect. Both teams jealously guarded the slot.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

New Hampshire Honorable Mention: Vilma Vaattovaara
But for one close range shot, Vilma might have grabbed the top star. Be that as it may, she still had a strong game, stopping 24 of 25 Buckeye Shots.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Kara Gust and Alexa Ranahan
The Buckeye Coaches went with 4 'D' down the stretch to help preserve the shutout. As one would expect, the Schmitt Sisters combined to form one of those pairs. Never take the Schmitts for granted! But the other crunch time 'D' pair gets tonight's mention. It was great to see Kara and Alexa prosper in that role.

#3 Star: Cassandra Vilgrain, New Hampshire
UNH's top line, centered by Vilgrain, brings a nice mix of skill, hard work and size. Although they obviously didn't score tonight, Cassandra was very strong on face-offs, winning 13 of her 20 opportunities.

#2 Star: Claudia Kepler, Ohio State
Claudia had the game's only goal, earning her second consecutive #2 Star. Certainly a prosperous new beginning for Kepler.

Bryanna Neuwald's breakout pass started the scoring play. Kepler took the puck through the neutral zone; her bank pass sent Kendall Curtis in on net with a scoring chance. Not content to sit back, Claudia crashed the net . When rewarded with a quality chance of her own, she made no mistake. Also credit Julia McKinnon on the play, who kept the Wildcat defenders occupied and opened up more space for her linemates.

#1 Star: Kassidy Sauve, Ohio State
Bagging a shutout in your first college game is a special accomplishment. Kassidy stopped all 24 UNH shots to post the goose egg. Under the new circumstances, Sauve must have been at least a little nervous. But she certainly appeared to be calm as she gloved and sticked aside shots. The new star shined brightly tonight.

Next Up: Rematch With The Wildcats. Expecting Another Close Contest at 2:07 PM Saturday.

Haha, I didn't really have an expectation on your reply, other than I knew you would give it to me straight! That was a tough game tonight. I like our blueliners and I think Kassidy Sauve is going to be solid in net. We just need to get things ironed out on the other end of the ice and we should be fine. Hopefully, we find a way to get a couple more goals tomorrow to ease the pressure a tad on our freshman goaltender.

I was at the exhibition game and no one was holding back. If you are looking for me to disparage our kids or our coaching staff, you will always be disappointed in my posts because it's not going to happen. Ever. Then again, maybe you're just trolling, trying to get a rise out of Ohio State fans/alums.
