Ohio State 4
New Hampshire 3
Buckeyes Win Battle of Momentum Swings
Watching Saturday's game was like observing the ebb and flow of the tides. Try as you might, sometimes you just can't fight Mother Nature. In the first period the Buckeyes seemed irresistible, rolling to a 3-0 lead. Then, momentum gradually shifted to the Wildcats, who came all the way back to earn a 3-3 tie. Fortunately High Tide returned. Dominating the last ten minutes of the game, the Buckeye surge culminated with the GWG at 19:28 of the third period.
Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun
Honorable Mention: Jonna Curtis, New Hampshire
Just when the Buckeyes seemed to be making a little headway against the current, Jonna gave the Wildcat comeback a huge lift on the PK. Winning a battle at the left point, Curtis carried the puck the length of the ice. She charged to the net and appeared to beat the Buckeye Keeper through the 5 hole. OSU still led 3-2, but the storm clouds were gathering.
#3 Star: Amy Boucher, New Hampshire
Chasing a player around the net on the forecheck usually doesn't go well. But there's an exception to every rule. This time Amy separated the Buckeye defender from the puck, and immediately got two quality shots on goal. The second one tied the score at three. Quite honestly, I had Amy in mind for one of the Stars even before her tally. She had several outstanding shifts, crashing into the OSU zone like a magnificent whitecap. Not that it was what the home crowd wanted to see, but there was a certain amount of justice in seeing Boucher's fine efforts rewarded.
#2 Star: (tie) Kayla Sullivan, Ohio State and Maggie Rothgery, Ohio State
Let's turn back the clock for a moment. To understand the full cycle, the first period is also an essential part of the story. We'll let the Sullivan goal represent the first phase. Maggie created the scoring opportunity with a great cross-slot pass; Sully slammed the puck home with authority.
#1 Star: (tie) Julia McKinnon, Ohio State and Claudia Kepler, Ohio State
Once again, Claudia provided the finishing touch. 2 Days, 2 Game Winning Goals. Quite a weekend. But this is a team game. Julia was magnificent on the set-up. With tenacious forechecking McKinnon disrupted the Wildcat breakout. With persistence and a little help from
Kendall Curtis, she kept the play alive. Then came a brilliant centering pass, and Kepler did the rest.
Next Up: Road Trip To Wisconsin. By all accounts the Badgers are loaded this year; it should be a fine challenge.
