Re: WCHA Thread III

How does a belief in an overall conference strength and competitive advantage, real or not, negatively impact the sport on the whole...for all NCAA D-I women's hockey? Stupid question...but I would like to read thoughts on the adverse affect of that belief.

My picks:

Wisconsin @ Minnesota State - Wisconsin sweep

Lindenwood @ Ohio State - Buckeye sweep

Colgate @ Minnesota - Minnesota sweep (two 1-goal games, though)

Minn Whitecaps @ Minnesota-Duluth - Split - Whitecaps take game 1, UMD recovers in game 2

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Friday, September 28th
Ohio State 4
Lindenwood 0

Massive Shot Barrage Highlights Opening Night Win
64 Shots on Goal! I haven't checked, but I've got to believe that's a program record. The shot production was well balanced, with 19 coming in the first, 23 in the second, and 22 shots in the third. The Buckeyes produced constant pressure throughout the contest, and broke through often enough to secure a solid win.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie)Paige Semenza and Hokey Langan
Paige and Hokey led all shooters with 8 apiece. Paige was a force in the slot, creating traffic, attempting tips and battling for rebounds. Hokey did a fine job of playmaking from the perimeter; particular on the Power Play. That said, these players weren't rewarded on the scoresheet until late in the 3rd Period. To complete the scoring, Langan executed a beautiful pass across the slot to Semenza, who then launched an authoritative rocket high into the net. A feed from Minttu Tuominen started the successful odd man rush.

Lindenwood Honorable Mention: (tie)Alyssa West and Brooke Peden
This is the first time I've seen Lindenwood play. Admittedly the Lions were under siege most of the evening. But #21 and #22 still stood out for me. First line center West and First Right 'D' Peden both logged a ton of ice time, at even strength and on special teams. Both pounced on loose pucks with cat-like quickness. The determined efforts of these players helped keep the Lions in the game.

#3 Star: Nicole Hensley, Lindenwood
Welcome to Division One Hockey, Nicole. 60 saves, count 'em 60. Now that's a freshman debut. Many of the stops were of the spectacular variety, including thwarted breakaways. Hensley also swallowed many long range shots, refusing to give up juicy rebounds. No doubt Nicole was disappointed with the loss. But without her strong goaltending, this could have been an 8-0 game.

#2 Star: Kari Schmitt, Ohio State
Kari had an effective night on 'D', and also dropped 7 bombs on the Lindenwood net. One of those found the mark, apparently after glancing off one of the Lindenwood defenders. For good measure Kari used crisp perimeter passing on the Power Play to earn an assist on the 3rd Buckeye goal.

#1 Star: Taylor Kuehl, Ohio State
It was great to see Taylor have a strong night at Center. For starters, she won 9 of her 17 draws. One of those face-off wins led directly to Kari Schmitt's goal. Kuehl steered the puck to Danielle Gagne, whose pass to the point fed Kari. Later, Taylor had a brilliant tip-in off a Sara Schmitt shot from the right circle. Or perhaps it was an outstanding screen and a convincing fake tip. But the puck certainly appeared to rise after hitting Taylor's stick. Kuehl was also a leader in the shot parade, putting 5 pucks on target.

pgb-ohio: Might want to edit your recap - North Dakota doesn't open their season until next weekend!

Re: WCHA Thread III

OK, apologies for the confusion. I'm completely baffled by the malfunction I just dealt with, but I think my editing job is now complete.

Here's what happened. I used one of last season's posts as a template. When I attempted to submit the new post, I got a blank screen. Not unduly concerned, I went back a page and clicked on the auto-save tab. At first glance, it looked good, so I attempted to post again. That version of the post turned out to be a hybrid. The first portion was the new material, but the majority was stuff from one last year's North Dakota games, i.e. the template.

Why did this occur? No clue. Never had anything like this on USCHO before. Again, apologies.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Pgb, love the "unofficial" three stars of the game posts! I was not able to be at today's game so I will be anxiously awaiting your three stars of the game post for today's game. The thing I am taking away from this weekend is the fact that we had seven different players score goals. I could be wrong, but my opinion is that we will need that type of 'scoring by committee' if we are going to be successful this season. I think it's great that three of those seven players scoring are defensemen. Defense and goaltending were solid. I like the start. I realize that we will face tougher competition down the road, but I really like the start!

Sorry about the delay; lots going on this weekend. Will get the Saturday stars up before crashing tonight.

Spoiler Alert!

But to give you a first taste, I'll reveal that the #1 Star is #27 Annie Svedin!

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Saturday, September 29th
Ohio State 7
Lindenwood 2

And The Shots Just Keep On Coming!
Two games, 124 Shots on Goal! And 113 Saves for Nicole Hensley.

The Buckeye offense broke through on Saturday; Buckeye scorers monopolize this list of stars. But Lindenwood certainly earned some respect this weekend. The Lions could have been demoralized after Friday's game. Instead, they came to the Ice Rink motivated and ready to go. They actually controlled play for the first few shifts before the Buckeyes got fully energized. Loose pucks in both the slot and the corners were hotly contested all weekend. Over all, the intensity level was pretty impressive for September.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie)Alyssa West, Lindenwood and Jocelyn Slattery, Lindenwood
Alison Wickenheiser and Lyndsay Kirkham netted the goals for the Lions; both on fine shots. But I liked the single assists even better. Alyssa West carrried the puck the length of the ice through much traffic before dishing the puck off to Wickenheiser. The hardworking Slattery created a turnover on the forecheck before sending a fine centering pass to Kirkham.

#3 Star: Minttu Tuominen, Ohio State
One of the great things about this weekend was seeing a number of the returning players take their games to the next level. Though occupying crucial supporting roles last year, many have matured into true leaders. Minttu is a case in point. Now an Alternate Captain, Tuominen played with great confidence. After the initial burst by the Lions, Minttu helped steady the ship with the primary assist on each of the first two Buckeye goals.

#2 Star: Paige Semenza, Ohio State
Paige contributes in so many ways. All-out hustle on the PK. Intense battles for position and possession in the slot and in the corners. Stiff shots on goal. Saturday against Lindenwood? All of the above. Note that Paige had a four point night, with two goals and two assists. Included in this production were points on the first three Buckeye goals. The word difference-maker comes to mind. Usually this kind of output is good enough for a #1 Star. But keep reading...

#1 Star: Annie Svedin, Ohio State
By my count Annie had two goals and three assists for five point night. Like Semenza, she bagged points on the first three Buckeye goals, including scoring the GWG. Whether delivering precision feeds or firing laser beams from the point, Svedin was an offensive machine Saturday. Well done, Annie!
