Re: WCHA Thread III

What is going on with UMD. They only dressed 15 skaters? for the first home game of the season?

Congrats to fully rostered OSU for outshooting the Bulldogs in the Dog Pound and winning the game.

The season is off to a start that indicates the apple cart may no longer be completely on its wheels.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Interesting night in the WCHA. UMD and North Dakota lose at home and Wisconsin gives up two quick goals against Lindenwood before rallying for a 7-2 win.

How about the fact that MSU came back from 2-0 down? How about Bemidji coming back from a 2-0 deficit to Providence?

And as mentioned, Wisconsin was down 2-0 -- but in that case, it was the fact that they were down was the surprise, rather than the comeback.

After seeing the Lions play, I don't find the Lindenwood lead to be all that surprising. I'll admit, I would have been stunned had the Badgers lost the game. But the Lions are quite hardworking and definitely have some skill. No doubt they're a few players away from having a complete team. But they certainly can play well for stretches and get some nice things accomplished.

Oh, and while I'm obviously thrilled with result of the first game in Duluth, I certainly expect UMD to get stronger as the year goes on. They've done so in the past; they did so last year. Anyone hoping to contend needs to do the same. The "cart may be off its wheels" at the moment, but it certainly isn't totaled. ;)

Re: WCHA Thread III

They aren't a healthy bunch. You can only play the ones that the medical staff clears to play.

I'm wondering if there's an illness going around, besides the players who were injured last week that didn't play vs. the Whitecaps.. Thibault and Villila still didn't play tonight, and I don't remember seeing Zoe Hickel on the ice tonight, though she's listed on the game sheet, I have no shots of her on the ice tonight. Last Friday I saw at least one water bottled labled 'SICK' in large letters.

Tonight wasn't so much about missing players (unless fatigue means anything in the first two periods,) as it was the young defense turning the puck over at the blue line, whether that means getting it deep or holding it in. I lost count of how many odd-man rushes OSU had tonight, but the worst one was in the third period with Semenza jumping off the bench on a line change and being the only player near the puck after UMD's D got too deep when Katie Wilson had a good scoring chance down 2-1.. she pretty much went from the red line to the UMD net alone when a teammate cleared the puck after Knapp saved Wilson's scoring chance. Unless the forwards, like Wilson and Winberg, took the puck deep, it didn't get there otherwise on Friday night. Hope Saturday is better, but I don't get to see the game, with 2 college football games to cover.

This early in the season, if you've had a lot of players injured, ill, whatever, it means they haven't had much chance to practice together, put together combinations, get a feel for each other. Given your players come from all over the world (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!), they haven't had a chance to work together, because it is unlikely that they once played together on a youth team or at a national camp.

Nice sweep for Buckeyes. Couple things somewhat unique about this game that haven't happened for many years for OSU. They were able to weather a pretty ferocious third period by a good opponent and were the beneficiary of a lucky goal at the end to get the win. Knapp played well and should get the #1 star; but that is totally unofficial unless endorsed by the official 3stars of game poster. Other notable players were McKinnon for OSU and Wong, Cournoyer, and Lacquette. A couple of us in the peanut gallery were impressed by Lacquette's backward skating ability.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Wong got her 100th point with the first goal of the game. That about covers it for Bulldogs highlights. They need to get healthy and get a full squad dressed. Like last night, though, that's not to take anything away from the Buckeyes. They came into Duluth with a game plan and played UMD as hard as they always do and earned the sweep.

Natalie who?

I think PGB just does three stars for games in Columbus.

Re: WCHA Thread III

True. Those posts are based on eyewitness observations. Over the years I've made a number of road trips, but unfortunately they're all too rare. So for all intents and purposes, we're talking about Buckeye Home Games.

There was one time I did three stars based on a box score; that time the stars lept off the page. But in cases like that, I guarantee that there will be full disclosure, to say nothing of more limited commentary.

Oh, and while I thank xwildfan for the deference, my three stars are definitely UNofficial. OSU Sports Info doesn't do an official three stars list. At least for now, that leaves an opening for someone like me. I've latched onto it as a good way to support Women's Hockey generally, and Buckeye Hockey in particular.

Ok, PGB will be designated as the "Official Unofficial OSU Home Ice 3 Stars Selection Chairman" with all the benefits that come with that position.

Trust me, no one will be jealous of the "benefits package.":D But if others in the community are enjoying the 3 Stars posts, then it's worthwhile. :)

No Husky thread? I'll say Happy Birthday to The Boomer right here then. Hope it was a great day! Huskies take at least one this weekend I believe.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Some very interesting matchups are on tap this coming weekend! It's already very obvious that consistently picking the winners this season will not be easy...

St. Cloud State @ Bemidji State - A bit of an upset, but I think St. Cloud will surprise and win one at the Sanford Center: SPLIT

North Dakota @ Ohio State - I'm pulling for the Buckeyes to win at least one of these at home, but I think UND will find a way to win both and SWEEP

Lindenwood @ Minnesota State - Minnesota State will SWEEP

Minnesota @ St. Lawrence - I'm concerned about the travel and how the Gophers will respond, especially in their first game away from home, but they should prevail in both and SWEEP the Saints.

Wisconsin @ Minnesota-Duluth - In most years I would expect Duluth to win AT LEAST one on their home ice, but this time around I think the Badgers will continue to regain their footing while UMD continues to struggle. Wisconsin SWEEPS.
