Re: WCHA Thread III

(where the top 3 returning points finished) and predicting:

1. UND - (## 1, 5, 7 = 13)

2. MN - ## 3, 15, 23 = 41

3. UMD ## 13, 20, 23 = 56

4. WIS ## 1, 23, 37 = 61

5. BSU ## 17, 30, 47 = 94

6. OSU ## 27, 34, 53 = 114/MSU ## 37, 37, 43 = 117

8. SCSU ## 53, 53, 70 = 176

Ummm...

I think goalies/defense can decide games.

MINN Goalie back, Bozek and the 6 footer back all D 5'9" or better.
UND D back? Goalie
UMD Goalie back, D back
Wisc Goalie back
OSU Goalies back
BSU loses GREAT goalie! Loses great D
MSU loses goalie
SCSU Goalie back

Re: WCHA Thread III

Good point...

I also look at goals for and against.

Examples:

Minny loses scoring and some D but replacing some of it?
UND doesn't lose much anywhere.
UMD loses top scorer not much else.
Wisc - games should be closer as they losing a ton of scoring. (Still have Decker though)Goalie
OSU - loses ton of scoring as do many teams. Return goalies and couple of nice offense recruits
BSU - loses goalie(key) Still has Erickson. Don't feel they will win those Sat 1-0, 2-1 games this year
MSU doesn't lose much
SCSU doesn't lose much

Feel 5 through 8 can land at any spot. Maybe one can jump up???

It will be an interesting year as will 2013/14

Re: WCHA Thread III

I think it is a tougher season than normal to predict. The top four can finish in any order and it wouldn't surprise me that much. By the end of the season, I thought that UMD was right there with Wisconsin and Minnesota. A large part of that was that Harss was playing great; like Irwin, Harss is now gone. They have a lot of young goalies coming in, and if one is a wall, they could win the league. UND clearly returns the most intact offense. The question with them was goals against; it will be again. If they get good play in net and on the blue line, they could be league champs, but that's the "if". Wisconsin will NOT finish 4th. I'm quite certain of that. Johnson's teams are just too consistent year in and year out. They lose a ton of production, but they were a very deep team defensively. If nothing else, they'll go back to winning a lot of 2-1 games. Minnesota lost a number of go to players, but they do return an All-American in net, on D, and up front. Plus they have another very strong recruiting class. In the end it may come down to which team is the healthiest, particularly with key players. Imagine how prospects for any of those four teams change if somebody is injured like: Wong or Lacquette, JLam or MLK, Decker or Rigsby, Räty or Kessel. As for the other four, BSU and OSU would have a chance to move up if they hadn't been hit so hard by graduation. SCSU had the least talent in the league, and that looks to continue. I'm not sure why MSU isn't better, but I doubt that they will be until something changes with the arrival of a blue-chip player or a new coach.

UMD doesn't have any returning goalies. They're starting with three freshmen. Jennifer Harss and Lana Steck graduated and Paige Turner transferred to a DIII school.

My mistake... For some reason I thought she had another year. She played some very strong games.

Harss only played three years, but the word at the end of last season was that it would be her last as a Bulldog. Unless I'm mistaken, she took part in Senior Day. Of course, there is a precedent for a UMD goalie coming back after her career was thought to be done (Sautter-Elsmore).

Re: WCHA Thread III

Then I'm changing my picks.

1. UND
2. Minny just heard a rumor they might miss their big dog first 2 months??
3. Wisc
4. UMD missing more than I thought. :)
5. OSU
6. MSU
7. BSU
8. SCSU

I don't know. Scoring and scorers similar to the last time Badgers finished in 4th a couple years ago?

The Gophers don't have dogs -- you must be thinking of another team in the university system. ;)

That roster didn't have a returning Kaz winner, an established goaltender, nor Coach Johnson. Scoring is just one piece of the puzzle.

Decker was on that team, that team had goalies with >90% save percentage, but I admit Johnson could make a huge difference if he's on the roster and takes the ice.

Decker was a freshman and broke her arm in the opening weekend. Now she is the reigning Patty Kaz winner and Rigsby is considerably better than the 2010 goalies. And a stable coaching staff is back.

Yes, Wisconsin loses a lot of offensive output, but other than that, there's not a lot of comparison to the 2010 team.

Re: WCHA Thread III

1) Minnesota
2) North Dakota
3) Minnesota Duluth
4) Wisconsin
5) Bemidji State
6) Ohio State
7) St. Cloud State
8) Minnesota State-Mankato
I'd revise my picks if they were any more meaningful than any other pre-season poll. They aren't so I'll save myself the time.

I'll just add it's entirely possible for my #s 3 and 4 picks to land in the top 2 spots in any order obviously. That's actually what I view as the most likely potential variation...North Dakota and or Minnesota dropping to spots behind UW and or UMD. I still see goaltending as a potential issue for TTFKATFS. ;) I think they'll stack up to the best offensively. The twins will be driven in their final college campaign I imagine.

Re: WCHA Thread III

... that team had goalies with >90% save percentage...
There's a difference in goalies that stop 91% of the shots and 95% of the shots in terms of goals allowed in an average series. Beyond stats, if you watch all the goalies under discussion play, you'll start to understand where I'm coming from. The Wisconsin blue line had injury issues that season; they are much deeper now. If Rigsby gets hurt and can't play, then I'd be more apt to agree with you.

The Bulldogs recently acquired the first Australian player to ever play for UMD. I guess she was on the Australian national team for what that's worth. This means the freshman class alone will have representatives from seven different countries (U.S., Canada, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Russia and Australia.) This also means I have no idea what to expect for this coming season.

Harss has exceeded the maximum age limit...born in '87.

You are joking right? I'm pretty sure that there isn't an age limit for NCAA eligibility. Chris Weinke was a 28 year old football player at Florida State and Brandon Weedon, the Cleveland Browns 2012 draft pick was 27 last year.
