2012 tournament

Selection committee: Chris Schneider, Ohio State associate athletic director (chair); Nate Handrahan, Robert Morris coach; Shannon Miller, Minnesota-Duluth coach; Megan McHugo, Ivy League assistant director.
For future reference when tournament q'final and subsequent semi pairings gaffes become apparent and associated gripes are vented. With the change in position for coach Handrahan one cannot claim under representation of the WCHA. I assume committee members have a hand in bracket determination? Or does a higher power intercede?

Re: WCHA Thread III

WCHA recaps and etc. from the past weekends action.

How long had it been since the Huskies last executed a sweep?

Current conference scoring stats:

http://wcha.com/women/statistics/1112/coplayers.php

My personal opinion is there's a need for an increased number of Gopher players in the upper regions of the scoring stats list.

The standings:

With evident ample opportunity for several to improve their position with the games remaining.

Re: WCHA Thread III

How do pick who gets to be on the selection committee? I don't see how a coach of any team should be on the committee, or an AD for that matter.

On another note, I think the race for 3rd place has HUGE implications for the NCAA's, as the committee SHOULD put 4 wcha teams in the tourney, but of course you never know what they'll do.

Re: WCHA Thread III

That would be huge for MSU because All Seasons is a dump. It hasn't changed since I started there in 1991.

Re: WCHA Thread III

I actually like watching games there. OSU rink is a dump and surprising for a school that large.

I like the concessions at All Seasons. Don't mind watching games there...a little tricky getting around with a crowd. Improved over the days when the visitors had to climb / descend a set of stairs to / from their locker room...and when the puck used to slide under the boards behind the net at one end.

This weekends match ups:

Minnesota State @ Ohio State

Bemidji State @ Minnesota

St. Cloud State @ North Dakota

Minnesota-Duluth @ Wisconsin

Mutts in Madison with losses mounting. How many more in the L column can their tournament hopes withstand?

It did offer a team another option on the PK -- "The old stuff the puck under the zamboni door trick!"

After last night's action, UMD is in a three-way tie for 8th in the PWR, and not that far behind in RPI. Assuming one more loss in the WCHA tournament -- the point is moot if they win the auto bid -- then I would guess that 9-3 over the rest of the WCHA season and quarters likely gets them in.

Haha, you should have seen the OSU Ice Rink before they renovated it! You're preaching to the choir regarding OSU. All of us OSU hockey fans have been saying for years that we need a hockey-only facility for our hockey programs. Unfortunately, a new hockey arena is currently at or near the bottom of the athletic department's priority list. OTOH, the Schott holds 17,500 for men's hockey and is a nice place to see a hockey game. The problem with that is we don't come close to selling it out, so it just looks cavernous. The biggest draw this season was last Friday's Michigan game ... 9,800 and change ... a little over half-full.

SOPA didn't go through, where are all my fellow posters?? :)

no upsets tonight, but a few interesting points:

-#2 minnesota had over 40 shots but needed a 3rd period goal to get the victory over bsu. kudos to the Big Z
-ohio state beat mankato 3-1. a win is a win, but ohio state's loss to scsu and average performance against mankato leave them in the middle of the pack.
-wisconsin beat duluth 2-0. i dont have much to say, except its predictable.
-north dakota beat scsu 10-0. the 3 game huskie win streak was short lived as und had a basketball shooting percentage.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Friday, January 20th
Ohio State 3
Minnesota State 1

Buckeyes Prevail Over Plucky Mavericks

The final score makes the game look fairly routine, but the truth is that the Mavericks fought hard until very end. The Mavs actually outshot the Bucks 12-7 in the 3rd Period. The outcome was in doubt until Hokey Langan fed Laura McIntosh for an insurance goal with 1:23 remaining. The team with the greater firepower won, but Mankato players can hold their heads high after this one.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

WCHA Honorable Mention: Scoreboard Operator
A number of players were separated from their sticks last night. In one case the lumber was launched over the glass into off-ice officials area. But before the projectile could do any damage, the Scoreboard Operator made sensational bare-handed grab. Imagine someone snatching a javelin out of the air and you've got the picture.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Ally Tarr
Ally's laser blast into the upper right hand corner proved to be the game winning goal.

Minnesota State Honorable Mention: Danielle Butters
It wasn't meant to be for the Mavericks, but Danielle's steady 33 save performance kept Mankato in the game. Butters' positioning appeared to sound throughout the game; all three Buckeye goals came on very high quality chances.

#3 Star: Tracy McCann, Minnesota State; and Erika Magnusson, Minnesota State (tie)
The Mavericks lone goal came as the result of fine dual effort from McCann and Magnusson. Gaining possession in their defensive zone, the pair took the puck the length of the ice, trading possession along the way. Then on a second effort, Tracy swept the puck into the net with a backhander. Or was that a 3rd effort?

#2 Star: Lisa Steffes, Ohio State
Lisa stood tall, and the Buckeyes needed it -- especially during the Mavericks' third period push. At one point she made a backwards diving save that had everyone on both teams shaking their heads. Only the very determined play by McCann and Magnusson prevented Steffes from recording the shutout.

#1 Star: Tina Hollowell, Ohio State
Tina had a great game. The hard-working Hollowell often drew key assignments on the PK and at crunch time in the third period. I'm not sure if this by design or if the coaches were just playing the hot hand, but the ice time was well deserved. Symbolic of her effort was the foot race she won to cancel an icing call. Just as important was her goal that opened the scoring, completing a 2 on 1 effort with Kelly Wild.

Up Next: Rematch with Minnesota State Saturday Afternoon at 4:07 PM. Bring your skates; it's the final Post-Game Open Skate of the Year!

Re: WCHA Thread III

North Dakota finishes its sweep of SCSU, 9-0.

JLam once again leads the nation in scoring, MLK 3rd, Karvinen 9th.
That line is deadly.

Just got a look at the box score - http://www.collegehockeystats.net/1112/boxes/wndkstc1.j21 - and saw the two fighting majors and game DQs. Anyone have any insight on that?

I don't remember ever seeing a fighting major called in a women's game... not even in the brawl between UND and Minnesota State 3 years ago. And Leah Wrazidlo was the referee in that game as well.

I was listening to the game, so no visual, but from what I heard SCSU's Monkman tripped Weber, and it sounded like Zabrick said something after the play that got Weber riled up. Then a few punches were thrown, gloves were still on. The off ice official determined the DQ's.

I didn't see it, but assume that with how the rest of the weekend went, UND won the fight, too . . .:(

3 Stars of the Game: The REVISED Cliff Notes Version

Rather than delay any further, here's a capsule version of the Unofficial Three Stars for Saturday. Apologies to all who regularly read the thread; this won't be up to the usual standards. But better this snapshot than skipping the game altogether.

EDIT: Let this be a lesson to all students, young and old: never rely solely on the Cliff Notes.:o I was beyond exhausted when I posted Sunday night, and managed to mess up the +/- stats. This revised edition fixes that problem. Thanks for bearing with me.

Honorable Mention: Brittany Carlson, Ohio State
The Buckeyes' top 'D' pair had a great game Saturday. Carlson and Wild had matching +3s to lead all players.

#3 Star: Emillia Anderson, Minnesota State; and Kari Lundberg, Minnesota State (tie)
The Maverick goal scorers kept things interesting until the end. Both had one goal on three shots, and broke even in the +/- category.

#2 Star: Kelly Wild, Ohio State
The usual intensity on 'D,' and a goal to boot. As noted above, +3 for the game.

#1 Star: Taylor Kuehl, Ohio State
The Buckeyes needed scoring production from others beyond the usual suspects. Taylor delivered in a big way with the GWG and an assist.

Up Next: Huge series with the North Dakota scoring machine. See you at the Ice Rink @ 7:07 PM Friday and 4:07 PM Saturday.

OSU with a shot at 3rd in the standings. Don't think I'd bet on it though.
