Final From Friday, January 27th
Ohio State 6
North Dakota 2

Huge Effort Yields Huge Victory

This series has been circled on my calendar for a while. Came to the rink pretty fired up. Obviously the team was on the same page. Three solid periods of Buckeye Hockey yielded an impressive win over a fine North Dakota team.

Among other things, this was a night of redemption. No matter what happens the rest of the way, that awful weekend in Grand Forks last October has been neutralized.

For better or worse, there's not much time to celebrate. Tonight's win just makes tomorrow's game all the bigger. But this was a great night to be a Buckeye.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Danielle Gagne
Danielle was absolutely on fire in the first period, and was central to setting the tone for the game. Scoring on a breakaway and drawing 2 separate penalties, Gagne led a high energy effort that kept UND on its heals for much of the night.

North Dakota Honorable Mention: UND Power Play
The visitors from the Peace Garden State probably didn't like much about tonight's contest, but they certainly don't have to make any apologies for their power play. The Green and White went 2 for 6 with the man advantage, employing both good puck movement and long range shooting. The big names found their way onto the scoresheet with power play tallies. Michelle Karvinen and Jocelyn Lamoureux bagged the goals. Josefine Jakobsen assisted on both plays; Monique Lamoureux-Kolls had the primary assist on her Twin's tally. The talent on the power play is obvious; the lesson is two-fold. First, shutting out this group 5x5 is an outstanding accomplishment. Second, the Buckeyes would be well advised to keep penalties to a minimum in the rematch.

#3 Star: Kari Schmitt, Ohio State; and Sara Schmitt, Ohio State (tie)
We've got sisters too! The "sisterly synergy" paid dividends tonight, as the Schmitts went +2 and +3 respectively. Also, Kari had her first goal as a Buckeye, bombing in a shot from the right point.

#2 Star: OSU Power Play
Sometimes there just aren't enough stars to go around. The power play had an outstanding night, going 3 for 7. Where to start? After an even strength assist, Paige Semenza opened the power play onslaught. Natalie Spooner had a pair of PP goals, including the rocket that completed the evening's scoring. Hokey Langan's two PP assists gave her 100 career points as a Buckeye. Normally any of these performances would merit an individual star. But this was a special night. So Semenza, Spooner and Langan will have to settle for group recognition. Oh, and North Dakota would also be well advised to keep penalties to a minimum in the rematch!

#1 Star: Laura McIntosh, Ohio State
With tonight's three assists, Mac reached 160 career points as a Buckeye, and joined Jana Harrigan as the program's all-time scoring leader. One suspects that it won't take too long to get the tiebreaking point.

Each of the assists was memorable. On the first, Laura pulled out a pitching wedge and lobbed a pass over the UND defense. Gagne's successful breakaway finished the play. On the second, she sent a cross ice laser pass to Spooner, who pounded the puck home. On the third, Mac paused before the face-off to verbally settle down the troops. (Could there be some coaching in her future plans?:)) After the draw was won, we saw the trademark McIntosh dangling before she delegated the rest of the play to Langan and Spooner.

...and another big weekend ahead. Bigger for some than others.

Minnesota @ St. Cloud State

Ohio State @ Minnesota-Duluth

Bemidji State @ North Dakota

Minnesota State @ Wisconsin

Think I read Minnesota needs one more W to clinch home ice. Hope they get that...and more. I know the Huskies will be hungry.

Bemidji has given Minnesota and Wisconsin incredible battles, and fits on subsequent weekends. Can they push UND on a 3rd subsequent weekend, or will they be worn down?

Buckeyes in Duluth with much at stake for both. Could this one get ugly?

I suspect Wisconsin will not be required to dip into the bottomless horseshoe bucket.

I suspect Wisconsin will not be required to dip into the bottomless horseshoe bucket.

That's a good thing because the accounting department has confirmed that the warehouse from which said easily portable buckets have been endlessly refilled this season, as required, is now officially empty. OOB...(Out of Business).

Final From Saturday, January 28th

North Dakota Parlays Strong Start Into Split

Tonight UND controlled the first portion of the game, and built a substantial lead. In the 3rd Period OSU mounted a spirited comeback, but the mountain proved to be too high to climb. As a result, each team wound up with a decisive victory in the series.

Although neither game was a cliffhanger, both games were competitive. Momentum shifted back and forth throughout the weekend. The snipers on each team had their chance to shine. The fact that neither score was close seems like more of an oddity than anything else. Apparently in this particular match-up, the modus operandi is to score in bunches.

Special teams were once again a factor. The UND Power Play continued to produce, notching a pair of goals. At the same time, the North Dakota PK was able to blank Ohio State. Despite 18 power play shots, the Buckeyes went a frustrating 0 for 6 on the PP. This was the single biggest difference between the two games.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Melissa Feste
Melissa has missed a majority of the season due to injury, but she continues to gain strength in her comeback. Tonight Feste brought a lot of energy to the rink, and her effort was rewarded with a rebound opportunity about halfway through the third. She grabbed the rebound off a Paige Semenza shot, and swept the puck into the net.

North Dakota Honorable Mention: Jocelyn Lamoureux
Another in the long line of productive games for Jocelyn. A goal and an assist on the scoresheet. She also won the draw that led directly to the first UND goal.

Confidential to JLam, with apologies to William Shakesphere: A rose by any other name is still a rose; a slash by any other name is still a slash.;) Be that as it may, you played a strong game.

#3 Star: Alyssa Wiebe, North Dakota and Mary Loken, North Dakota (tie)
Mary steered Alyssa's picture-perfect centering pass into the net for the game's final tally. The pair might also have opened the scoring had the net not come dislodged before the puck crossed the line. Late in the second period, Wiebe scored from the point with Loken providing the screen. They make a potent combination, to say the least. The linemates both finished at +2 on the evening.

#2 Star: Paige Semenza, Ohio State
Paige sparked the OSU comeback. On the first OSU goal, she blocked a UND shot and took off for open ice. Kayla Sullivan found the loose puck and sent a perfect pass up ice to the streaking Semenza. To finish off the shortie, Paige appeared to beat Stepanie Ney through the five hole, perhaps hitting the inside of Ney's leg in the process. In any event, the puck wound up just inside the left post. On the second Buckeye goal, Semenza drove to the net and took the initial shot on the Feste conversion.

#1 Star: Josefine Jakobsen, North Dakota
Josefine got on the scoresheet in every which way: Shooting, digging a puck out of the corner and playmaking. In that order, on the first three UND goals. You might say Jakobsen had an impact. You would be correct.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Anybody know what the difference is (besides $2 in cost) between the "reserved" and the "general admission" tickets for the Final Faceoff? Does the general admission seating exclude certain sections at AMSOIL Arena?

I noticed that the NCAA Frozen Four doesn't have that differentiation. The seating at the regular season games (at least the Gopher-Bulldog games a couple of weeks back) appeared to be fully general admission despite what any tickets may have said.

Re: WCHA Thread III

I forgot which thread this question came up on, but it sounds like Karvinen is officially a rookie and in contention for rookie of the year.

und game notes:

"SCORING TITLES: The 2011 U.S. World Championship forward line of Jocelyne Lamoureux (27-38-65), Wisconsin's Brianna Decker (28-33-61) and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls (22-37-59) are currently first, second and third in the nation in points, respectively.

Michelle Karvinen (18-26-44) has a 5-point lead over Northeastern's Kendall Coyne (22-17-39) for the rookie scoring title.

North Dakota leads the WCHA and is third in the nation averaging 4.70 goals per game. Mercyhurst ranks No. 1 at 4.92 goals per game."

I think so. As someone pointed out, she has been WCHA Rookie of the Week so it stands to reason. Looking pretty good for WCHA Rookie of the Year at this point.

* (WCHA-member teams finished the regular season with a 33-7-6 record and .778 winning percentage against opponents from other Division I conferences. WCHA teams went 6-0-2 vs. ECAC, 13-2-1 vs. HE, 8-5-3 vs. CHA and 6-0-0 vs. Independents.)

Re: WCHA Thread III

One more left to play this weekend. The week ahead:

Minnesota-Duluth @ Bemidji State

North Dakota @ Minnesota State

Minnesota @ Ohio State

Wisconsin @ St. Cloud State

Can the Beavers bounce back and compete as they did against the Gophers and Badgers? If they do that I feel pretty good about their chances at Sanford...and for driving another nail in the coffin.

I'll say it, a trip to Columbus concerns me...I'd be surprised by anything better than a split for Minnesota...pleasantly surprised.

The Sioux and Badgers likely cruise.

Re: WCHA Thread III

With all the talk of Natalie Spooner in the UMD/OSU weekend thread.. I wonder how long a thread of 'Iconic players' for WCHA opposition would go on.. the players NOT on the team you follow, but on the visiting team coming into your arena you loved to watch.. or loved to hate to watch.

You mean like an all-time all-opponent team?
