Re: WCHA Thread III

You mean like an all-time all-opponent team?

Sara Bauer.

I'm not sure we could get it down to even 2 lines worth of players and goaltenders.. but since you mention Wisconsin's Bauer, I'd take Erika Lawler, zipping up and down the ice.. reminding us of what Jenny Potter did in Duluth for 3 years..

Re: WCHA Thread III

With all the talk of Natalie Spooner in the UMD/OSU weekend thread.. I wonder how long a thread of 'Iconic players' for WCHA opposition would go on.. the players NOT on the team you follow, but on the visiting team coming into your arena you loved to watch.. or loved to hate to watch.
The last opposing player that I felt similarly about was Erika Lawler. I hated what she did against my team, but she sure was fun to watch play.

I think we typed and clicked Lawler about the same time

It's a nice idea for a thread as long as it's kept positive and void of negative tainted challenges to players mentioned. Yet I think at this stage all iconic former WCHA players would be covered in relatively short time.

You mean like an all-time all-opponent team?

Caroline Ouellette

Re: WCHA Thread III

Must be something in the water, but the first name that comes to my mind also wore the big red "W" and that would be Jessie Vetter. Although the Dogs always played her well, she was a class act and a good sport.

Never like Lawler, always thought she was vastly overrated.

With four games to go.

It's taken me several years of intense attentive viewing but I think I understand the game sufficiently enough now to understand four WCHA games equals two conference series vs. two different opponents. Not too bad eh?

Icons of the Women's WCHA

Icons of the Women's WCHA

Adding to the list of Icons, here are my first, unresearched thoughts:

Must Haves From Minnesota: Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell

I Was Beaten to the Punch But They've Gotta Be on My List: Sara Bauer and Caroline Ouellette

Goalie to Ponder: Bemidji's Zusana Tomcikova (Over the course of the 12+ seasons, has there ever been a goalie who meant more to her team?)

Great topic! I'll let others take their shot at it, but will continue my stroll through memory lane. If come up with a name that no one else mentions, I'll add it to the mix.

Need for clarification: Are we actually trying to limit this to a first team and a second team? As regulars on this thread know, I'm prone to coming up with honorable mentions. ;)

Re: WCHA Thread III

I can't tell if there is sarcasm in that or not....
Yes. Sarcasm was intended. Fact is...how anyone could call them "overrated" is beyond me. Couldn't be paying much attention to their production every season without exception...going back to SSM. Or after watching them play and witnessing their skills. They will have to merit iconic status at some point...any time now or in the future.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Bemidji has had great goaltending, with Emily Brookshaw and Zuzana Tomcikova.. nearly identical numbers if you consider that Brookshaw's senior year Annie Bauerfield led the team with 5 goals. If she'd had any support at all *AND* Steve Sertich as her coach, who knows where they might have gone. I don't collect a lot of women's college hockey stuff, but I will keep the Bemidji program I won at UMD's last National Championship hosting during one of the raffles.. team signed cover with Brookshaw and her signature in the center.

Not to leave out St. Cloud, but between Caitlin Hogan, Felicia Nelson, Meaghan Pezon, and Holly Roberts, I think I'd take Hogan and her assists/passing.

We could do 10 pages of this stuff, maybe it could be better saved for after the season is over :D

Re: WCHA Thread III

Being a Gopher fan from the program's beginning...

Even though she was on the Twin Cities squad for a season, I have to put one Jenny Schmidgall-Potter on the list. The fact that she took a year off for the Olympics... then came back... then took a year off to have a baby... then came back... meant that it felt like she was never going to run out of eligibility.

I realize that the latter feat in and of itself was very impressive (even more so given her actual skills), but I recall yelling out "graduate already!" ;)

I would certainly put MSU's Shari Vogt in that conversation as well. She saw an unbelievable amount of rubber shot her way during her time in Mankato and showed signs of marked improvement between her freshman year (.892 save %, 4.34 GAA) and her senior year (.934 save %, 2.26 GAA). She was dangerous that 2003-2004 season, starting out by sweeping UMD and later taking the eventual national champion Gophers to overtime twice (though Krissy and Natalie were on different lines for the first of those, and Natalie was out of the lineup the second).

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Friday, February 10th
Minnesota 5
Ohio State 0

Gopher Stars Shine

There may not be a formula for beating this Gopher team. But we established one thing tonight: Giving up two goals in the first two minutes isn't the ticket. To the Buckeyes credit, they didn't quit. They even outshot the Gophers in the 3rd Period 14-7. Nevertheless, Minnesota took control right at the start, and never really let Ohio State back in the game.

The Gophers excelled on offense, in the nets, and most especially on defense. The big name players lived up to their billing. The Buckeyes were by no means awful, but I can't rightfully claim that they earned any stars tonight.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Amanda Kessel, Minnesota
Amanda collected two assists, perhaps a modest output by her standards. But her precision passing led to 4x4 and 5x4 goals. Her crisp feed to Anne Schleper was particularly impressive on the 4x4 tally. Give the Gopher stars space to operate, and they'll produce.

Less noticed but just as important, Kessel made some nice plays on the backcheck. Early on she hustled back to break up a high quality Buckeye chance. Had OSU scored at that point, maybe the game plays out differently. But Amanda K. said no. When your leading scorer is buying into the importance of defense, you've got a good thing going.

#3 Star: Jen Schoullis, Minnesota
Jen led all scorers with a goal and two assists. She put the exclamation mark the Gophers' offensive effort. Camped out down low, Schoullis slammed home a diagonal pass from Sarah Erickson to close the scoring. Jen was also effective on face-offs, winning 14 and losing only 8.

#2 Star: Noora Raty, Minnesota
With a 5 goal cushion work with, it can't be said that Raty single-handedly won the game. But she more than did her part! Simultaneously aggressive and relaxed, she was a dominant force in both the crease and the surrounding real estate. She's eager to play the puck, and does so with considerable skill. The Buckeyes had relatively few high quality chances. But when they came Noora was more than equal to the task. Congratulations to Raty for her 25 save shutout.

#1 Star: Anne Schleper, Minnesota
This edition of the Gopher defense is impressive. They have size, smarts and skill. We have great defenders in the Women's WCHA, but it's been a while since a 'D' Corps has been has been this effective disrupting the Buckeye attack. As happens with some regularity with my lists, it becomes necessary to pick one player to represent her unit. Tonight we'll go with Anne Schleper. Along with 'D' partner Rachel Ramsey, she led all players with a +3.

In the middle period, a pair of Gopher goals really sealed the deal. On the first, while anchoring the left point, Anne fed a D2D pass to Megan Bozek, who drilled the puck into the net from the right point. Let's quickly mention Sarah Erickson again, who provided a nice screen on the play. On the second, Schelper moved into open space just to the left of the slot, and convincingly finished the beautiful Kessel feed mentioned above.

Re: WCHA Thread III

You're right, Pgb, you are too tough on goalies ... haha just kidding. I thought Noora was spectacular last night, and to be honest, I expected no less. We'll have to find a way to get some traffic in front of the net today (won't be easy) or somehow get her out of position to get the puck in the net. Minnesota is an amazing team on defense, and their offense isn't too shabby, either! ;)
