Re: WCHA Thread III

I once watched Shannon Miller laugh hysterically as Jenny Potter repeatedly punched Natalie Darwitz with Natalie's head hitting the ice, also repeatedly, while Darwitz was on her back in the UMD crease.
Now was this before or after she started to throw water bottles at referees? Before any UMD fan defends her, I have seen it with my own two eyes. I don't think many people can deny that she doesn't have the greatest of relationship with any of the WCHA referees.

Having arrived at the halfway point...roughly:

http://wcha.com/women/standings.php

Things may look just slightly different than WCHA fans might have expected. Then again, maybe not. I don't think there was much doubt UND would be improved and battling for a top spot in the standings. The 2nd half will pose a fair challenge for most to maintain or improve their position. I would only except Wisconsin from that opinion...as I've become completely accustomed to the reality the Badgers so rarely, if ever stumble. Minnesota with an outside chance of pulling even but would likely have to be perfect to do it. Not something I'd bet on...with being on the road four times in 2012. Anticipating some shuffling below the first place Badgers.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Appreciate the links, brookyone.

Note that the standings in the first link includes a complete list of the tie-breaking procedures. As I usually consult USCHO for standings, I'm not sure if wcha.com has been doing this all year long. But if so, good for them. In the past this list has been somewhat difficult to locate. Posting them with the standings makes perfect sense, and is very handy for the reader. Thumbs up, wcha.com.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Ohio State defeated Princeton 3-2 in a shootout earlier today. Pgb, hope you were able to make it to the game so you can give us your unofficial three stars!

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Friday, December 30th
Ohio State 2
Princeton 2
(Ohio State Wins Shootout 2-1)

Heavy Metal Thunder Yields Only A Tie

Tina Hollowell's Breakaway. Ally Tarr's Penalty Shot. And too many more to count. Over and over, Buckeye shots found nothing but metal. And we're not talking about nicking the outside of the net. We're talking quality scoring chances slamming off crossbars and posts.

It's been said that pipes are a goalie's best friend. If that's the case, then Princeton Goalie Rachel Weber may have found her BFF -- the OSU goal cages. Don't get me wrong; Weber made many fine saves. But without the pipes... well, you get the idea.

Overall, the game bore some resemblence to the 12/2 game against Niagara. A determined visiting underdog earned a tie after 65 minutes of hockey. Then, the home team won the exhibition shootout.

Great News Department: Melissa Feste and Kari Schmitt were back on the ice for the Buckeyes, each after an extended absence.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Natalie Spooner
Natalie had assists on both Buckeye goals, and the shootout-winning tally. I truly want to spread around the kudos, but once again Spooner was a difference-maker. If you earn the mention, you get the mention.

Princeton Honorable Mention: Gabie Figueroa
OSU controlled the early going, and built a substantial advantage in shots. But in the second period a set of three Buckeye penalties gave the Tigers renewed life, and a power play goal. It began with a cross-slot pass from Kelly Cooke to Danille DeCesare. The pass was partially blocked, but DeCesare was able to do enough with it to get the puck back to Figueroa. Gabie then rifled a shot at the Buckeye goal. Though slightly offline, the shot had good pace; it deflected off a defender and into the net. The Figueroa goal tied the score and effectively got the Tigers back into the game.

#3 Star: Ally Tarr, Ohio State
Ally opened the scoring by squeezing a shot through Weber's 5 hole. The shot didn't have a lot of steam on it after getting through, but it was enough to get across the goal line. Later, Tarr earned a penalty shot by dancing around a Princeton defender and gaining a clear path to the goal. The Tiger had little choice but to pull Tarr down. As noted above, the penalty shot failed. But Ally rectified that in the shootout, roofing a sizzling shot into the upper right hand corner of the net. In an exhibition shootout, it may be iffy to describe anything as vital. But Tarr's shot countered an opening score by DiCesare. So at the very least it can be described as the turning point of the shootout.

#2 Star: Paige Semenza, Ohio State
Paige got a slot on the first line today, and started the game. Semenza certainly made the most of her opportunity. On the first scoring play, she kept the power play alive along the left wing boards. On the second Buckeye goal, she finished the play with a nifty backhand move in the slot. At the same time, Paige didn't neglect her regular duties as an energy player, and gave her usual stellar effort on the PK.

#1 Star: Sally Butler, Princeton; and Rose Alleva, Princeton (tie)
Butler and Alleva combined to tie the game with just 3:46 left in regulation time. Rose intercepted a pass in the neutral zone, and carried the puck deep into the Buckeye end. Circling the Buckeye net, she found Sally moving into the slot. Alleva's pass hit the tape. Butler's quick release one-timer beat Chelsea Knapp under the wrist of her glove hand -- arguably a 7 hole shot. You hate to give up a tying goal in the closing moments. But you have to respect the fine play executed by Butler and Alleva.

Up Next: Rematch with Princeton Saturday Afternoon at 12:07 PM. Note the early start time, and have a Happy New Year -- both during and after the game.:)

Re: WCHA Thread III

Pgb, have a very Happy New Year! Looking forward to your post regarding today's game! Tough weekend for the team, only getting a couple of ties out of this series. Hopefully they can get a couple bounce-back wins next weekend at St. Cloud and pick up six points in the WCHA in the process.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Can I put in an opinion from the peanut gallery that Rachel Weber should be the #1 star today in the OSU-Princeton game for her 46 saves today (44 in the game and 2 more in the shootout)? I know this is a WCHA thread and she's not on a WCHA team, but you can't argue with that kind of effort in net that earns her team at least a tie.

Plus that makes up for not giving her even an honorable mention for her 38 saves on Friday night.

Pgb has always been very objective about giving the other team's players credit. I am sure you will see Rachel Weber on the list somewhere. You touched on the frustrating thing for us Buckeye fans, that many shots and only two goals. If our team wants to achieve their goals this season, they have to do a better job of getting the puck in the net when given the opportunity.

Stealing my thunder, eh?:D

Preview: Rachel Weber is my #1 Star for Saturday's game. I solemnly swear I made that decision before leaving the Ice Rink Saturday afternoon.;) Sorry about the delay in posting the full list, but New Year's Eve festivities got in the way. Will rectify that soon.

Plus that makes up for not giving her even an honorable mention for her 38 saves on Friday night.
Weber fully earned top honors on Saturday, but there's nothing to make up for. She didn't play badly Friday. Still, with average luck, the Buckeyes would have had 4 or 5 goals in the Friday game. I honestly lost track of the number of times Weber was beaten but saved by the metal. Granted, those were high quality scoring chances. Had the Tigers lost, Weber would have been free from blame. But on the other hand, she was beaten too many times to be considered for a star, IMHO.

EDIT: All that said, I certainly welcome comments on the 3 Stars -- agree or disagree. Thanks for posting!

Final From Saturday, December 31st
Ohio State 1
Princeton 1
(Princeton Wins Shootout 2-0)

Split Series, Lost Weekend

It would be pretty tough to split a series more evenly: A pair of ties, and an exhibition shootout win for each squad. And yet, Princeton will be far more satisfied with the results than Ohio State. It wasn't for lack of effort, but the Buckeyes' inability to score defined the series. Particularly on Saturday, that was a Princeton accomplishment. Also, both games saw the Tigers come from behind to forge the tie. That's always more satisfying than surrendering a lead, the knotted final scores notwithstanding. From an emotional standpoint, the series felt more like a bowling split than a hockey split to OSU.

It's been suggested elsewhere that this weekend's results will have a highly detrimental effect on the Buckeyes' standing in the national rankings and the pairwise calculations to come. Perhaps so. But OSU shouldn't overreact. The opportunity for a great second half is still there. A stingy defense kept us off the scoreboard. It's hockey; this happens. And despite the holiday layoff and the missing international players, there were few signs of rust. It will be best to give the Princeton players their due and simply move on.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Shootout Honorable Mention: Kelly Cooke, Princeton and Danille DeCesare, Princeton (tie)
Both players did well all weekend, capping the effort with outstanding goals in the exhibition shootout. The left-handed Cooke nailed the upper right hand corner of the net. The right-handed DeCesare banked in a shot low off the left post. The impressive shootout performance put an exclamation point on the Tigers' weekend.

Regulation Honorable Mention: Sally Butler, Princeton and Denna Laing, Princeton (tie)
Once again Butler had the key game-tying goal, this time with an assist from Denna Laing. Laing also had a nice day in the face-off circle, winning 9 of 17 opportunities. But the top honors of the day must go to the Princeton defense.

#3 Star: Rose Alleva, Princeton
Despite the high number of Buckeye shots, the hardworking Princeton defense never quit. Most of the Buckeye shots were taken under duress; I'm sure Goalie Weber would be the first to credit her teammates in this regard. As is often the case, it's tough to single out one player when you're looking to honor a fine group effort. But Rose Alleva stood out from the crowd with her 6 shot blocks. We'll have Rose represent the Tiger defense.

#2 Star: Paige Semenza, Ohio State
Once again Paige skated with the first line, and again made the most of her opportunity. Her unassisted goal was the lone tally for the Buckeyes. A bad bounce handcuffed a Tiger defender at the point, and Semenza converted the opportunity into a breakaway. As Semenza charged the Princeton net from the right, it appeared that Goalie Weber was looking to shut down the 5 hole as her first priority. In doing so, a little space on the left post was left unguarded. Paige found it, and the Buckeyes led 1-0.

#1 Star: Rachel Weber, Princeton
As per the exchange of posts late last night, this was pretty easy call. Rachel handled 43 of the 44 shots, including 4 clutch saves in the overtime. A pair of stops in the exhibition shootout was the icing on the cake. Yes, the succesful defense was the product of a team effort. But Weber's solid, steadfast play led the way.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Ohio State defeated St. Cloud State earlier tonight 2-0. Natalie Spooner scored both goals for tOSU and in the process tied the goal-scoring record at Ohio State with 86 goals in her career. Chelsea Knapp gets the shutout for Ohio State.

Re: WCHA Thread III

A scoreless OT, a shootout with the first five shooters stymied then the final shooter Hillary Knight rips one top shelf for the shootout winner and UW gets the bonus point. :(

The shootout winner a clear example of a tremendously gifted player knowing just what to do in the shooter v goalie challenge and the skill to do it.

With the split the weekend ahead becomes a battle for 5th place in the WCHA between the Beavers and the Buckeyes. Also possibly launching either into a race for the 3rd or 4th position via a hypothetical sweep...and depending on how things go elsewhere around the conference of course. Rest assured Minnesota will do their best to assist any potential "sweeper" in a move to the 4th position. ;)

Flyin' water bottles and profane verbal assault of officials be d a m ned!

On tap for the coming weekend:

Ohio State @ Bemidji State

St. Cloud State @ Minnesota State

Minnesota @ Minnesota-Duluth

Wisconsin @ North Dakota

Obviously the potential for a pivotal weekend in the contestable WCHA standings.

I REFUSE to root for that team from Grand Forks!

(at least publicly)

Re: WCHA Thread III

Ohio State got a big road win tonight at Bemidji State. Natalie Spooner and Ally Tarr both scored two goals and Minttu Tuominen added the other goal in the 5-3 win. This is a quality road win. Hopefully we can complete the sweep tomorrow and pick up six points this weekend.
