Re: WCHA Thread III
Final From Saturday, December 3rd
Ohio State 5
Niagara 2
Niagara never quit all weekend, and certainly earned our respect. Statistical trends from Friday continued. Remarkably, Shots On Goal finished in a dead heat at 31 each. The Buckeyes had a razor thin margin in face-offs, going 27-25 as a team. Niagara maintained it's edge in Shot Blocking, holding a 19-7 advantage at the end of the contest.
In contrast to Friday, the Buckeyes regained their scoring touch. Much of the offense was generated by what some are dubbing a "Power Line" of Langan, McIntosh and Spooner. On this day, the group took the opening face-off and played as a unit for most of the game. Though important contributions came from players throughout the roster, the top set of forwards created most of the scoring chances and proved to be the difference makers. Often this will take the form of McIntosh and Langan setting the table for a Spooner finish, as was the case in the weekend's final goal.
3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun
Ohio State Honorable Mention: Natalie Spooner and Hokey Langan (tie)
This is an exact repeat of yesterday's Honorable Mention. Once again both players were instrumental in the offense. Both had a goal and an assist. Each player posted a +3 in the plus/minus category. Either would have been a worthy star, but there's only so much room at the top.
Niagara Honorable Mention: Erica Owczarczak
The Buckeye shots kept coming, Erica kept blocking. In the Saturday rematch she had 3 blocks, for a weekend total of 7. Her sturdy defense shows up in the plus/category. Despite the 3 goal defeat suffered by team, she was even for game. Clearly a talented two-way player, Owczarczak assisted on both Purple Eagle goals. With both crisp passing and stiff shots, Erica creates lots of offense for NU.
#3 Star: Annie Svedin, Ohio State
Annie scored her first goal as a Buckeye in Saturday's game. The puck didn't have to travel far. The Niagara goalie made a valiant save on Natalie Spooner's initial shot, but the puck dropped free near the goal line. Annie pounced on the loose puck and slammed it home. The goal broke the ice for OSU, and tied the score at 1-1. The goal came with less than a minute remaining in the first period, giving the Buckeyes a crucial lift going into the dressing room. As it turned out, OSU did not trail again in the contest.
Given the strong challenge presented by Niagara, a stellar defensive effort was also required. Svedin certainly did her share; no goals were scored on her watch. Annie finished the game at +3.
#2 Star: Jessica Hitchcock, Niagara and Kalli Funk, Niagara (tie)
As usual, Buckeye netminder
Lisa Steffes proved very difficult to beat. The Purple Eagles did it twice, but it took skillful tip plays on both occasions. The #2 Star is shared by the NU goal scorers.
Jessica Hitchcock opened the scoring from the slot, redirecting a puck out of mid-air. Connecting with Erica Owczarczak's shot from the point required some serious hand/eye coordination. Nevertheless, Jessica steered the puck into the upper part of the Buckeye net.
Kalli Funk's goal was somewhat similar in that she also redirected a shot from the right point. This time
Jocey Kleiber had the primary assist. Funk's goal pulled Niagara even at 2-2.
#1 Star: Laura McIntosh, Ohio State
When Laura McIntosh touches the puck, good things happen. Mac started the scoring play on 4 of the 5 Buckeye goals, bagging the second assist in each case. A breakout pass, a shot from the point, playmaking in the offensive zone -- as usual, Laura did a little bit of everything. Like the other Buckeyes recognized tonight, McIntosh had a +3 performance. Laura McIntosh: The Buckeyes' Sparkplug.
