Re: WCHA Thread III

Ohio State defeated Niagara 5-2 earlier today. Five different players scored goals for the Buckeyes and Laura McIntosh had four assists. Pgb, can't wait to read your unofficial three stars of the game for this one.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Saturday, December 3rd
Ohio State 5
Niagara 2

Niagara never quit all weekend, and certainly earned our respect. Statistical trends from Friday continued. Remarkably, Shots On Goal finished in a dead heat at 31 each. The Buckeyes had a razor thin margin in face-offs, going 27-25 as a team. Niagara maintained it's edge in Shot Blocking, holding a 19-7 advantage at the end of the contest.

In contrast to Friday, the Buckeyes regained their scoring touch. Much of the offense was generated by what some are dubbing a "Power Line" of Langan, McIntosh and Spooner. On this day, the group took the opening face-off and played as a unit for most of the game. Though important contributions came from players throughout the roster, the top set of forwards created most of the scoring chances and proved to be the difference makers. Often this will take the form of McIntosh and Langan setting the table for a Spooner finish, as was the case in the weekend's final goal.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Natalie Spooner and Hokey Langan (tie)
This is an exact repeat of yesterday's Honorable Mention. Once again both players were instrumental in the offense. Both had a goal and an assist. Each player posted a +3 in the plus/minus category. Either would have been a worthy star, but there's only so much room at the top.

Niagara Honorable Mention: Erica Owczarczak
The Buckeye shots kept coming, Erica kept blocking. In the Saturday rematch she had 3 blocks, for a weekend total of 7. Her sturdy defense shows up in the plus/category. Despite the 3 goal defeat suffered by team, she was even for game. Clearly a talented two-way player, Owczarczak assisted on both Purple Eagle goals. With both crisp passing and stiff shots, Erica creates lots of offense for NU.

#3 Star: Annie Svedin, Ohio State
Annie scored her first goal as a Buckeye in Saturday's game. The puck didn't have to travel far. The Niagara goalie made a valiant save on Natalie Spooner's initial shot, but the puck dropped free near the goal line. Annie pounced on the loose puck and slammed it home. The goal broke the ice for OSU, and tied the score at 1-1. The goal came with less than a minute remaining in the first period, giving the Buckeyes a crucial lift going into the dressing room. As it turned out, OSU did not trail again in the contest.

Given the strong challenge presented by Niagara, a stellar defensive effort was also required. Svedin certainly did her share; no goals were scored on her watch. Annie finished the game at +3.

#2 Star: Jessica Hitchcock, Niagara and Kalli Funk, Niagara (tie)
As usual, Buckeye netminder Lisa Steffes proved very difficult to beat. The Purple Eagles did it twice, but it took skillful tip plays on both occasions. The #2 Star is shared by the NU goal scorers.

Jessica Hitchcock opened the scoring from the slot, redirecting a puck out of mid-air. Connecting with Erica Owczarczak's shot from the point required some serious hand/eye coordination. Nevertheless, Jessica steered the puck into the upper part of the Buckeye net.

Kalli Funk's goal was somewhat similar in that she also redirected a shot from the right point. This time Jocey Kleiber had the primary assist. Funk's goal pulled Niagara even at 2-2.

#1 Star: Laura McIntosh, Ohio State
When Laura McIntosh touches the puck, good things happen. Mac started the scoring play on 4 of the 5 Buckeye goals, bagging the second assist in each case. A breakout pass, a shot from the point, playmaking in the offensive zone -- as usual, Laura did a little bit of everything. Like the other Buckeyes recognized tonight, McIntosh had a +3 performance. Laura McIntosh: The Buckeyes' Sparkplug.

Up Next: Road Trip to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Weekend conference recaps:

http://www.wcha.com/women/index.php

I expect cyclical down turns for most programs, but the SCSU Huskies with losses rapidly mounting for a 2nd season...with quite a few large margins on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Being competitive in the WCHA isn't an easy accomplishment but still the primary goal for all conference teams. The Huskies once were a team that would give WCHA opponents a battle in the bulk of conference match-ups...not long ago. Something needs to happen / change in St. Cloud before long. Just an observation from a WCHA fan. Good fans in St. Cloud...and it has to be frustrating for both them, and the team.

One might think similarly about the Mavs.

Yes...I feel so completely defeated considering the obviously objective, normal, well adjusted, intelligent source that is so commonplace among hockey parents...like yourself...arse.

Anything to say about the WCHA? In frequent typical 5 4 Loser speak...go back to your D-III world. :)

Agree with your assessment--one, I believe, that is accepted by most in the hockey world. With the obvious exception of the SCSU administration.

Frustrating? Oh, yes. Embarrassing? Yes.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Genuine pearl of wisdom there...

Anything on the thread topic yet?

Well as a matter of fact....you challenged someone on here to familiarize themselves with the rivalry between UMD and Goophers fans and I've done that.

Survey says...they all think your a Dick.

I think most people that follow SCSU could see the hard times coming but didn't expect it to be this bad. After all, SCSU went from finishing 3rd in the conference to almost not winning a game the following year.

Changes need to be made. At least this year SCSU fans don't have to wait until the last weekend of the year(I think it was that late) to see if the team can manage to win a game.

It was the seconnd-to-last series of the regular season. You still had UMD and Wisconsin to enjoy. It's one thing to not be able to score, and that's clearly a big issue, but the number of times that five or more goals are allowed can't be allowed to continue. That's happened in every conference game thus far. It's not good for anyone in the league when one team slumps this badly.

This team makes the Titanic's chances look good! ;)

Ok, I couldn't quite remember I just knew it was late in the year. Its going to be another LONG season for SCSU.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Anxious to see the results from this weekends marquee matchups between UND and UMD/UW and BSU.

Can BSU continue to split series against top 10 teams with goaltending, a defense that clogs the slot and blocks 20+ shots a game and ride their power play that is currently the conference best at over 30%?

Wisco always finds ways to win although having played in a lot of close games against UM, UMD, UND, and OSU. Box scores look like a bounce here or there and they could have dropped a game or two.

Both of those teams play well when they game is close so should be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Obviously UMD has shown its highs and lows already this season. What team will show up in Grand Forks? Should be a determined team sitting on the bubble of the top-10. If they happened to get swept, when was the last time they dropped out of the polls?

UND has couple intriguing decisions to make as well. Do you ride Dagfinrud coming off the shutout or go back to who has been your starter for most of the season? I would guess Dagfinrud gets the first game and you go from there, but Ney has had some of her best career games against the Bulldogs. Do you keep Lamoureux-Kolls at defense?

I think that series will come down to secondary scoring. Whose 2nd and 3rd lines can produce. Also will be interesting to see what matchups Idalski and staff try to get playing at home. Always fun to watch Lamoureux/Irwin, not much love loss there.

Yeah it will be a good series. Irwin feels the need to try to intimidate the Twins, as she wouldnt take her glove away from JLam's face after the whistle at the end of regulation the second game in Duluth which somehow resulted in matching penalties, and they couldn't shoot in the shootout!

Re: WCHA Thread III

Glad to see McParland get some props. Jenna played very well when UMD was here. She left town without one of my "Unofficial 3 Stars," but probably deserved one.

irwin feels the need to try to intimidate the twins? not even slightly the other way around? and in a perfect world fans will just watch the **** game and quit complaining about the refs, newsflash its no secret to the entire country that the refs in the WCHA are the most incosistent group in the NCAA, learn to deal with it then sit down and watch hockey
