Re: WCHA Thread III

Two votes apiece for your pick...or primary pick, and my own pick for RotY.

I'd have to acknowledge an edge for Karvinen due to her likely advantage in ice time. Hope at the finish the two voters favoring Miss Lorence prove to possess keen foresight.
Revisiting our previous discussion regarding WCHA RotY, Karvinen seems to have separated from the pack with 10-13-23 in 12 conference games. UND lists her as a sophomore, so whether that only applies to her year in school and she is still considered a rookie, I don't know.

In second place and the only other rookie in double figures is someone that we didn't mention much, UND's Josefine Jakobsen with 5-5-10 in 12 games. Both of UMD's high-profile rookies, McParland and Lacquette, are next with seven points, UM's Ramsey and OSU's Kuehl have six, and Lorence has five.

All of these totals are for conference games only.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Karvinen in my mind is ahead of the pack. Amazing two way player. Stands out in every game I've seen her play.

Noticed the "sophomore" qualification near the beginning of the season and was a little puzzled. Sorry...I'm only looking at those listed as "freshman" for RotY.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Perhaps the nicest and most politically correct assessment of the Huskies' this year!

Like the players and feel they work hard and never give up. Nice facilities. Just feel coach misses boat on in state talent BIG time. Not a fan.

Re: WCHA Thread III

I am also happy to see BSU is finally in the rankings and have watched them play a couple times. The Beavers are very well coached and the style they play is very tough to go against, however, I see them at the end of the year in the fifth or sixth spot in the WCHA. With that said I think they will take whomever they play to a third game but still don't have the offensive fire power to beat a Duluth or UND in a series of three games. If they were able to make it past then I do agree that they could beat anybody in a one game series which they have proven this year with one-goal wins over Duluth, UND and UM. Only win on the road though came in Duluth. IMO, they have the hardest schedule remaining in WCHA play with 2 home and away against Wisco, 2 at Minnesota, 2 at North Dakota and 2 at home vs. Duluth.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Coming up in the WCHA:

Wisconsin @ Minnesota State

St. Cloud State @ Minnesota-Duluth

Niagara @ Ohio State

Minnesota @ North Dakota

That's a BIG series in Grand Forks!

GO HUSKIES...GO MAVERICKS!!

Re: WCHA Thread III

Always been a Gophers fan. I also like the way UND has been playing and love both teams top lines. Excited for this weekend. I think it will be a greeat series. Can't wait.

Re: WCHA Thread III

You came through! Appreciate the link; enjoyed the write-up. And I'm certainly impressed with that average attendance figure.

Wow, ditto on that average attendance figure at North Dakota womens hockey games! Dang, that would fill our place up twice and then some! Well done, Fighting Sioux fans.

Re: WCHA Thread III

Not only great attendence but also a fiesty crowd which really taunts the opposing team including Sieve Sieve after every goal and a special fan who does a very loud Indian chant after every goal. Also on the big screen before a game they show goals being scored against the team they're playing. Ouch!

Re: WCHA Thread III

Final From Friday, December 2nd
Ohio State 1
Niagara 1
(Ohio State Wins Shootout 2-0)

Niagara put forth a fine effort Friday night, and deserved the good result. The hardworking Purple Eagles disrupted the Buckeyes attack, cutting off passing lines and blocking shots. They won at least their share of the loose pucks. Due to the Niagara pressure, the Buckeyes weren't as sharp as usual. At the same time, the Buckeyes were also pretty stingy in terms of allowing quality scoring chances.

In the end, the 1-1 tie was a pretty equitable result. Shots were virtually even, with Niagara holding a 23-22 edge. Face-offs were dead even at 30 apiece. Each team had 5 Minor Penalties.

Despite the fact that this was non-conference competition, an exhibition shootout was held at the conclusion of the 5 minute overtime. As will be described below, the Buckeyes dominated the shootout at both ends of the ice.

3 Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Natalie Spooner and Hokey Langan (tie)
The defenses were the main story tonight, so we'll limit recognition of the offenses to the Honorable Mention section. But these snipers certainly deserve the kudos. The Buckeye goal during regulation time came on a nasty top shelf shot by Spooner. Langan opened the shootout by ripping a bell ringer off the inside of the left post and into the net. As the Buckeyes third shooter, Spooner sealed the deal with a patient 5 hole conversion.

Niagara Honorable Mention: Kelsey Welch
Niagara has some firepower of its own. The Purple Eagles Scoring play began when Erin Burns sent the puck ahead to Jessica Hitchcock. Hitchcock carried the puck up left wing, gained the blue line, then centered the puck to Welch. Kelsey moved into the high slot and buried the shot.

#3 Star: Brittany Carlson, Ohio State
I can't really point to any stats on Brittany's behalf, but it's my conviction she had a very solid game on the blue line. Calm under pressure, quick reactions and constant communication are all hallmarks of Carlson's game. Brittany and 'D' Partner Kelly Wild did a fine job controlling their end of the ice, despite giving away size to the opposing forwards. Much the same could be said of the full defensive corps; I guess it's Brittany's turn to represent the team effort.

#2 Star: Erica Owczarczak, Niagara
Niagara's shot blocking made a major difference in this game. The Purple Eagles had 22 blocks to the Buckeyes 8. Erica led the way with 4 blocks by herself. Also deserving recognition are forwards Amy Helfrich and Kristen Richards, who had 3 blocks apiece. Even the Buckeye shots that got through were often of the hurried variety.

Note that USCHO Poster Purple Eagles put Owczarczak at the top of the list of key NU players. Erica didn't disappoint.

#1 Star: Chelsea Knapp, Ohio State
Chelsea was consistently solid and occasionally spectacular in limiting Niagara to one goal. In the shootout, she was consistently spectacular. One Purple Eagle shooter went to the lower right side; the other to the lower left. In each case Knapp extended a leg to beat the shooter to the post, making quality pad saves. A couple of similar saves in regulation time preserved the tie for the Buckeyes.

Up Next: Rematch with the Niagara Purple Eagles Saturday Afternoon at 2:07 PM.
