WCHA Thread III

Re: WCHA Thread III

Brooky,

I think Minny will be the favorite to win not only the WCHA but also everything. I think they have the most top to bottom talent and a great goalie. They will have many key Seniors who will be hungry. Wisconsin and UMD lose some strong key players and will be just behind. Just have to contain my favorite WCHA player Knight. I do think ND will be as strong as last year and my dark horse OSU with the new head coach and a nice group of seniors will contend.

My rank today would be

MINNY
Wisconsin
ND or OSU
UMD
BEMIDJI
MSU
SCSU

I wouldn't be surprised to see any of Wisc, ND, OSU or UMD taking the #2 spot.

I think Minny and the Badgers will be in a group of their own, but I see UW holding the top spot still. A lot will depend on how strong they are in net, if Rigsby has a solid year I think the Badgers can run the table again. Their offense will suffer without Duggan for sure, but they return 348 total points vs Minny's 337 points in total last year. UW gave up 165 point while Minny gave up 164. I am assuming UW will see more improvment in net and the bulk of their Defense return. So, i think the Badgers are still the team to beat. I think the rest of you rankings are spot on with UND having the edge over OSU.

Re: WCHA Thread III

If we were betting. This is how I'd pick.

Minny
Wisconsin
OSU
UMD
ND
BSU
MSU
SDSU

I've always been a Minny fan and would love to see this happen. Love the Freshmen coming in all scorers. This will be their best shot since the Krissy, Natalie etc. days. Just have a feeling about OSU at 3?

Can't wait and planning on seeing many games. This will be one of the best years as many teams strong with great goaltending. Anything can happen on any given night.

Always best to bet with you head not with you heart;)

Just curious what made you drop UND from fighting ofr 3rd to 5th in the last hour.

Not even close. The correct answer is:

UMD (league and national titles)
Wisconsin
North Dakota
Minnesota
Ohio State
Bemidji
Mankato
St. Cloud

What gives you the impression that the rodents are suddenly going to go gangbusters and win it all? They haven't won a league or a national title in seven years. Why is the upcoming season going to be any different?

Re: WCHA Thread III

Maybe this might answer your question. If I were picking with my gut and my heart it would be.

Minny
ND
OSU
Wisconsin
UMD
Bemidji
MSU
SCSU

I feel a need to pick Minny even though I don't have a direct tie to them other than growing up there and watching the early thru the current teams. I have a fondness to ND, OSU, and Bemidji (the underdog). Just not a fan of SCSU's and MSU's coaches. UMD is UMD and feel the fans need to be taken down a peg or two (strong dislike for the band and the guy in the coon skin hat). And of course I'm a huge Knight fan as I've seen her play many times and feel she is a very special player.

:D

Always enjoy this clowns prognostications. He's so consistently "not even close" this bodes well for Minnesota. :)

Re: WCHA Thread III

Let me explain my fan and band comment.

Band and coon skin are very mean spirited. Very hurtful to opponents goalie even when up by 4,5 or 6. and actually had a fan kick me and my wife out of our seat saying it was his and we needed to go to the other side??? There were maybe 60 fans in the building??? Come on!

Also Joeyshmoey is a little cocky... :)

Re: WCHA Thread III

I know you're not all bad. My wife actually wants to retire just north of you. Not suckin up but I thought your girls played the best organized system last year. Nobody broke out and into a zone better.

You came a little late to the party. Read a few posts earlier and you would've seen this.

Re: WCHA Thread III

S'pose I better weigh in and take my shot at picking the WCHA finish:

1) Minnesota
2) Wisconsin
3) North Dakota
4) Ohio State
5) Bemidji State
6) Minnesota State-Mankato
7) St. Cloud State
8) Minnesota Duluth

;) Thoughts?

First, one needs to understand the question. If we're ranking teams 1 thru 8, then we are talking about the WCHA regular season, where Minnesota holds more WCHA titles than the slobbering canines do (6 versus 3). While both UW and UMD return a lot of talent, they graduated the WCHA PotY and DPotY respectively, and are likely to feel some effect early. I doubt the Gophers get out of the blocks as poorly this season as they did last. As for seven years, you may need a new abacus.:D

Re: WCHA Thread III

My predicted order for the regular season:

Minnesota
Wisconsin
UMD
North Dakota
Ohio State
Bemidji State
Minnesota State
St. Cloud State

I red heart ARM for this one.

But I also defer to Schmoe to this extent: It is pretty hard to deny that UMD has been the champion every time the NCAA final has been held in Duluth.

But . . . my memory sucks and I am not going to look it up but didn't Wisconsin win the last WCHA final in Duluth? Even so, Schmoe has bragging rights for the NCAA finals until someone beats Duluth in Duluth.

But, and here, I defer to ARM, I think this is the year.

And as much as I like the UofM, until they beat Wisconsin they have not beaten Wisconsin. It should be a heck of a year.

I think Minnesota will play Wisconsin six times this season, four times in the regular season, once in the WCHA tournament and once in the NCAA final.

That's what I think.

The WCHA final has only been held in Duluth once (2008), and UMD won. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead against UW; the visiting Badgers roared back to force OT. Very similar to the 2011 WCHA Championship plot up to that point. In the 2008 OT, UMD dumped the puck in for an apparent icing, and the UW players relaxed. The two ARs (who have since been promoted to full refs) looked at each other, didn't wave off the icing, didn't call it, and the puck wound up in Bucky's net before it left the zone.

But I agree with your main point -- never underestimate the evil empire when they are hosting a tourney because strange things tend to happen.

Re: WCHA Thread III

I guess us old guys are a little more respectful of the past but I tend to agree with Granddaddyscout--until they are knocked off and with the number of returning players, less a major one ,I tend to lean toward Wisco but if UM 's sophomores can avoid the sophomore jinx , with the return of a key player from injury, with the loss of only a few from both the offence & defence and with the addition of a solid crop of freshmen,Minny should be right there.Next I don't know much better between ND and MD.OSU s/b next, followed by Bemid., Minn State and STS.
Like last year, fans of WCHA hockey will have the opportunity to follow some GREAT hockey this year regardless of the standings or rankings!!!
