WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

Re: WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

I don't see it since he is drafted, Copley left because he was a free agent and who knows if his stock could have gotten any higher...
The Jets don't really have a need to push him with Juho Olkinuora (ECHL), Connor Hellebuyck (AHL), and Mike Hutchinson (NHL) already in the pipeline and 2013 second round pick Eric Comrie playing in CHL right now.

Phillips stock will never be higher than it is right now. I hope he stays, but wouldn't be surprised if he signed after the season is over.

Yes it never will be higher, but he isn't a free agent and as I showed in my previous post, Winnipeg isn't atarving for a goalie.

Re: WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

I agree with Shirtless, but the one thing I'm worried about is the fact that Winnipeg does have so many goalie prospects, and with Phillips having more value now than ever, may he be trade bait during the draft? He may end up with a team with a much different goalie situation. {caugh}Minnesota{caugh}

Re: WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

I can't be too critical of the coaches or the media, because I had UAA 3rd. And, as June Cleaver said, I think we were all a little hard on the Beavers.

I will admit I am pleasantly surprised by the Beavers this year. The freshmen came into their own a lot faster then I thought, and that bodes well for the future. This six seniors will be missed, but they have put another little note in the Beaver History books by helping this team to their first WCHA Home Playoff Series. Granted, if Alaska wouldn't have been axed, they would be on the road, but the cards that were dealt put them in fourth!

Now, I have aspirations of them getting to the Xcel Center next weekend!

Crossing my fingers that Tech is not next season's Ferris State, with the seniors they are losing. Whether or not they're still in the top 4 will probably depend on any early departure by a certain elite goaltender.
But still more hockey to play this year, so we'll enjoy the ride.

I think that Tech has more offensive firepower, even with the depletion, than Ferris had. It's not like you're returning UAH's offense.

Sounds similar to the headlines at MTU: These six seniors have put another little note in the Huskies History books by helping this team to their first WCHA Home Playoff Series since the 1992-93 season.

Home playoff series in the last 20 years (including 2014-15):
BSU 1
MTU 1
If nothing else you're in good company.

They're likely stuck with Pavelec (but there has been trade talk), Hutchinson has been a star for them. Budaji is (most likely) gone after this year, leaving Connor Hellebuyck the heir apparent in St. John's.

Not sure who's in their ECHL system since they dumped Pasqualle. It's possible the money could pursuade him.

Speaking of predictions, I thought I'd drag these out from last fall:

Coaches' Poll

1. Minnesota State (9) 81
2. Ferris State (1) 67
3. Michigan Tech 64
4. Bowling Green 57
5. Alaska 44
6. Northern Michigan 40
7. Alaska Anchorage 38
8. Bemidji State 33
9. Lake Superior State 17
10. Alabama Huntsville 9

Media Poll

1. Minnesota State (23) 256
2. Ferris State (4) 226
3. Bowling Green 180
4. Michigan Tech 178
5. Alaska 163
6. Alaska Anchorage 128
7. Northern Michigan 112
8. Bemidji State 101
9. Lake Superior State 60
10. Alabama Huntsville 26

Puts it in real perspective how bad UAA was this season.

Yes it never will be higher, but he isn't a free agent and as I showed in my previous post, Winnipeg isn't atarving for a goalie.

If he declines to sign this summer because he sees all the depth in Winnipeg, and would rather let his exclusivity with the Jets expire, then he could become a free agent after another good-to-great senior year, right? Of course, I can't imagine teams like it when their picks have pulled this on them from time-tot-time.

He would have to wait until at least the end of summer to sign so he wouldn't be able to play as a pro at all in 2015-16 if he did that...one of the worst rules in the last CBA. Certainly makes it harder for seniors to stick around college when NHL teams get worried about them wanting to become free agents.

Hanna didn't have an all-WCHA kind of season like last year in my mind. I think Prapavessis is probably a better pick there. Other than rookie of the year (Bitzer gets my vote) I'd go along with the rest of the selections happily.

Re: WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

I do always find these selections interesting because it never seems like shutdown defensemen get much respect, its all about the offense production.

Re: WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

This isn't the official "all-WCHA" team, right? I mean, it is just sbnation, I would imagine that someone like Prapavessis replaces Hanna on the real team.

correct, but once again, if everyone likes that list except we swap Prapavessis for Hanna we have the 6 of the top 7 scoring forwards (Malcolm Gould scored more than Brandon Hawkins)
the top 4 scoring defensemen (Shane Hanna is ranked 8th)

As for all-rookie team its the top 3 forwards and top 2 defensemen...

Nothing against CJ Motte, but Stephon Williams really had outstanding numbers all season. I get that they don't want a team to be over-represented, but Williams was really good even of the other team didn't get a chance to shoot on him much.

Prapavessis took over some games that I watched this year, Hanna never really did. I just think the Beaver D-man has had a better all-around season on all parts of the ice.
