WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

I hear you on that! MSU has had a lot of the same core for the last 3 years. We've lost a 20 goal scorer each of the last 2 years, but the main setup man returned. Next year is the great unknown.

I'm surprised about how far Ferris fell off from last year. Yes, I know they were only a couple of points away from home ice, but when you look at their results, they really struggled with goals and significant wins. They were 11-1 against the bottom 3 teams in the conference, and 2-13-1 against everyone else.
The key is keeping Casey Nelson. Still loads of talent up front for the Mavericks, despite losing Leitner.

SBNCH posted their All-WCHA Team:

Thoughts?

The league's Goaltending Champion isn't on the list?

Nothing against CJ Motte, but Stephon Williams really had outstanding numbers all season. I get that they don't want a team to be over-represented, but Williams was really good even of the other team didn't get a chance to shoot on him much.

Awards should be earned not just "given out" to even out the numbers.

FWIW, Bitzer would be my ROY.

I think, right or wrong, last season may have negatively affected many people's perception of Williams' performance this year. To some, it looks like any goalie can win with our defense and system. "Hey, Huggins put up similar numbers last year! What's the big deal?"

Also, with Motte's career totals, there may be a Lifetime Achievement aspect to this.

Re: WCHA Playoffs 2015: MacNaughton Quest Determined

I do always find these selections interesting because it never seems like shutdown defensemen get much respect, its all about the offense production.

This is always my concern, too. I'll take a guy who doesn't contribute to a GA all weekend when his team splits over a guy who gets two assists.

It is extremely tough to quantify, it's also why I laugh that the defensive player of the week never goes to the guy with the best defense unless it's a goalie. I know it's easy to look at stats and stop looking...

That explanation makes a lot of sense. Plus/minus can go a long ways in rating defensemen. Actually, forwards also. The listed position on the all-whatever teams is "forward." There's a lot of forwards that don't get the recognition they deserve because they don't score a lot of points. There's a lot of forwards that make the right plays to get the puck going the other direction (out of the defensive zone), can draw the attention of a defender to free someone up on the other side, and can flat out dig along the boards to chew up the clock. They spend a lot of minutes on the penalty kill and that doesn't always directly put points on the board. The unfortunate part for them is nobody can watch every single game, so the voters look at the points column and submit their vote that way.

In no way am I stating that a player should have no offensive upside but I don't think the best defensemen are necessarily the guys that lead the stat sheet in points.

And there we have it...of the forwards, 8 are in the top nine, with Harms and Tatchell the exceptions...Harms was top ten in PPG but missed 8 WCHA games...
5 of the defensemen were top 6 in scoring.

Everyone on the all rookie team was top 2/3 in scoring for their position.

It was a pretty difficult choice for coach of the year I think...between the four coaches with home ice this year...

My vote goes to Tom Serratore. His team was selected 8th by the coaches and they're on home ice. I also would give honorable mention to Mike Corbett at UAH. There was a team that made huge strides from where they were a year ago, increased win total by six and competitive in nearly every game, well above what they achieved a year ago.

All in all I think if each league put its all-star teams on the ice, this group would acquit themselves very well in the six team tournament.

I wouldn't discount the job that Dallas Ferguson did. With nothing to play for except the Governor's Cup, he kept that team together pretty well under the circumstances. But imagine the uproar if he got it...whew!

I think if we finished higher than 4th there would have been a legitimate argument for it.
