WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

I'm not comparing hockey to basketball. I'm comparing the media hype, expectations, and results. I could compare it to anything, but I picked one relevant to sports at this time. The two can be compared reasonably.

I disagree. A hot goalie can totally change the outcome of a game. The same can't exactly be said for bouncyball. A "hot-shooter" can be managed, a "hot-goalie" there isn't as much that can be done.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

It has been three years since a WCHA team has even played in the national championship game, but the league won five titles in a row before that.

Four of the top six schools in all-time national championships are from the WCHA and the league has had the best regular-season nonconference record almost every season - and maybe every single one - over the past decade.

I really don't think there is much argument that the WCHA has been the best league in college hockey, but since the All-WCHA frozen four of 2005, the league's NCAA tournament success has been suspect for some reason.

STATEdude,
You going to give credit where credit is due for the initial line 'WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball'.
I love the thread, but you at least need to credit your source.
Plagarism is quite frowned upon in the Ivy League

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

The WCHA has the best top to bottom talent every single year, always carries the most teams into the tournament, yet the teams that are supposed to win find a way to fall short.

Yes I recognize it's not every team, every instance...but on the whole this is true. HC over UMTC @ Xcel in 2006, MSU over CC @ World in 2008, Miami over DU in 2009 and now the last team in RIT over DU.

WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Yo weiner which conference has won the most national championships?

Ummm... Dude, I think this thread is suppost to be about busting on Denver here for failing to beat a program that doesn't even offer scholorships.

Pretty sure there's plenty of talent to go around, the WCHA didn't have the most teams in the tournament this year (and maybe even last?) and last time I checked there's still a chance for 2 WCHA teams to make the FF.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

I hate Denver as much as the next guy, but get real about the WCHA. The WCHA will send more guys to the NHL this year then every other league in college hockey. Anybody who disputes that the WCHA is the best league in college hockey, well thats just petty jealousy.

That's what makes the comparison so perfect.
You can't forget that the NCAAs (regardless of sport- sans football) are one-and-done. Send players to the pros, have the best out of conference record, yadda yadda, but then you CHOKE

Yeah, the worst part is that the WCHA only had 1 team in it this year and they lost. Oh wait, UND, St. Cloud, Wisconsin. I'd hang on to the Big East comparison until a couple more lose.

And by the way, UND is going to beat the **** out of Yale tomorrow. I'm not saying they're going to win, but Yale is going to feel it.

Our boys can take it.
Unlike UND they have their education to fall back on ;)

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Hmmm. It's almost as if a single-elimination tournament is a highly variable thing. Never would have expected that...

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Good for you to wait for a decent sample size to play out before coming to a conclusion and starting this thread. I had a hole in one once. I should have driven right home and started a thread asking if I was the greatest golfer alive.

Where has this been mentioned before? I have had this thread in my mind since back in January. I am glad to hear I am not the only one to see this similarity.

By the way, I am not at all saying the WCHA is not a strong conference. In fact, I think they are the best league in the nation. However, I think they have a very hard time meeting the hype and expectations on the big stage come tournament time.

I am not taking shots at anyone that made the tournament, as my team did not, but I just don't understand how a conference that is said to be so superior has recently underachieved in the NCAA tournament.
