WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

It has been three years since a WCHA team has even played in the national championship game, but the league won five titles in a row before that.

Four of the top six schools in all-time national championships are from the WCHA and the league has had the best regular-season nonconference record almost every season - and maybe every single one - over the past decade.

I really don't think there is much argument that the WCHA has been the best league in college hockey, but since the All-WCHA frozen four of 2005, the league's NCAA tournament success has been suspect for some reason.

The reason 4 of the top six schools in all-time championships are WCHA is because the teams have been playing forever, alot of the schools have only been around half the time. Ever since 2005 the WCHA have been over rated, there has only been 1 year (2005) since 1997 that a HE team has not been in the final game

A reason and not the reason. Historically speaking the WCHA isn't overrated.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

And if 2 weekends ago, if a series at Munn had gone differently, you wouldn't be even hanging out on the boards right now. Troll!!

You are fairly naive. Did you even watch that series? sparty didn't even show up (of course I think that they checked out around the Holiday break). Michigan completely DOMINATED that series in spartys barn.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

"No Division 1 collegiate conference - in any sport - can top the impressive list of national scale accomplishments of the WCHA and its member teams. Since 1951, teams representing the men's WCHA have earned a record 36 NCAA (national) championships, finished as the national runner-up another 27 times, and qualified for a berth in collegiate hockey's national championship round - the NCAA Men's Frozen Four - in 53 of 57 seasons overall. And since it's founding in 1999-2000, teams representing the women's WCHA have now captured 11 consecutive national championships beginning the first year of 2000 and on through the most recent campaign of UMD"

I can see why you think they are overrated, they are only the best in any Div 1 sport all time.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

The WCHA has the best top to bottom talent every single year, always carries the most teams into the tournament, yet the teams that are supposed to win find a way to fall short.

Yes I recognize it's not every team, every instance...but on the whole this is true. HC over UMTC @ Xcel in 2006, MSU over CC @ World in 2008, Miami over DU in 2009 and now the last team in RIT over DU.

WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Just a little premature, eh?

WCHA is 2-1.

And I guess the more teams they get in, the more chances there are for them to lose.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

I never knew OU won all their wrestling championships with the Big 12.

The fact of the matter is they won many of their championships with the Big 8 or whatever it was called.

Oh...so Happy has to amend his post and subtract the CCHA teams, right?

We won't mention the Big 10's domination of Fencing, or the ACC's success in soccer.

No. That number counts NCAA titles won by those schools when they were members of the WCHA. 7 of Michigan's 9 titles count for the WCHA, 2 count for the CCHA.

So, you've got:

Michigan - 7
Denver - 7
North Dakota - 7
Wisconsin - 6
Minnesota - 5
Michigan Tech - 3
CC - 2
Michigan State - 1

So, that's 38. Technically, one of Michigan and one of CC's titles pre-date the 1951 founding of the WCHA - which gives you 36 NCAA titles. Out of 60 possible seasons.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

HC over UMTC @ Xcel in 2006
That game was at the REA and had a bunch of fans cheering against MN - it was for all intents and purposes a road game for the #1 overall seed in the tournament. Obviously, they should've beaten Holy Cross as the top seed - but it's pretty funny that all the #1 seed got them was a trip to a regional hosted by arguably their biggest rival (and had MN won that game, they would've faced UND in Grand Forks for the right to advance to the Frozen Four).

A #1 seed - not the #1 seed. Wisconsin sealed up the #1 overall seed with that "meaningless" win over Minnesota in the WCHA third place game, punching their tickets to Green Bay and sending Minnesota to the Forks.

Well they have won five of the last eight championships, too. I wouldn't say the WCHA was overated in 2006 since Wisconsin won the tournament that year either. They have had some head-scratching losses and poorer than expected overall results in the last three years, though.
