WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

given only 13 different teams have won it since the inception of the championship in.

Wrestling is also an individual sport at the nat'l champ level. I was a wrestler in hs and wrestling in tourney's like this is very different than teams wrestling h2h, the outcomes would most likely be very different if the champ was crowned like it is in the hs state tourney. The individuals are wrestling for themselves, when you are in a dual a lot can change, like the weight you wrestle at and the outcome you are trying to achieve (decision, major dec., tech, or pin) I have seen kids in duals that had to pin to give their team a chance take down the eventual state champion when they wouldnt end up making it.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

A #1 seed - not the #1 seed. Wisconsin sealed up the #1 overall seed with that "meaningless" win over Minnesota in the WCHA third place game, punching their tickets to Green Bay and sending Minnesota to the Forks.
Ah yes - MN was #2 overall that year. I mentally blocked out that 3rd place abortion where MN did not show up (seems to be a common theme for this program lately  ).

FWIW, I don't think they'd have gone to Green Bay in any case. The argument back then was that the two regionals were roughly the same distance from the Twin Cities, and the committee would've shipped UW to Green Bay for attendance reasons even if MN had been one spot above them in the pairwise. So no matter what happened in that 3rd place game, MN was going to Grand Forks.

Bemidji and Holy Cross would have probably been swapped in that case, with Holy Cross going to GB to play the #2 Badgers and Bemidji going to Grand Forks to play #1 Minnesota.

... and even if MN wins the game, they have to play one of their two biggest rivals on their ice - which is a totally ridiculous outcome if seedings are supposed to mean anything.

I'm guessing the average NCAA tourney team wins 70% of its games on home ice. The teams in the #2 seeding band probably win 75%. That's a pretty significant advantage to be giving a non-#1 seed in a tournament.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

You are fairly naive. Did you even watch that series? sparty didn't even show up (of course I think that they checked out around the Holiday break). Michigan completely DOMINATED that series in spartys barn.

No, I didn't watch that series at all. What I said was that if Michigan hadn't won that series, along with winning both nights at the Joe, they wouldn't have even been in the dance, and you would be off at some bar tonight trying to put moves on a fat girl.

You guys could have been rewarded with home as as a #4 seed this year but blew it. I'm surprised you weren't given seats to the game as a consolation gift.

Run through those factors that made you lose to Holy Cross again, please.

I went to the bar anyway tonight and the girl I put the moves on wasn't as fat as your mom...:p

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

I guess you missed that 29 of those championships were won by the Big Ten, so what the hell are you talking about?

The Big 12 (Big 8  ) has won 49 championships. So what the hell are you talking about?

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

I don't think anyone said the reason we lost was because we were placed in Grand Forks.

Agreed. But there seems to be some awfully heavy whining with having to go to Grand Forks. Do you realize how happy I would be, before this year, to have my team playing that close to home?

STATEdude,
You going to give credit where credit is due for the initial line 'WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball'.
I love the thread, but you at least need to credit your source.
Plagarism is quite frowned upon in the Ivy League

Plagarism will get you nowhere.
Sincerely,
Joe Biden

OHHH, I got a good excuse... Hot Goalie. Did I get it right?

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

not as good as the WCHA. but, a little better than the big east.

"No Division 1 collegiate conference - in any sport - can top the impressive list of national scale accomplishments of the WCHA and its member teams."

Yes, they can.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

Speaking of Big East basketball is Geno Auriemma a college hockey fan?
Here's a quote from him on casual women's basketball fans.

“I could care less about the casual fan, because I bet they could care less about me and my team. I don’t worry about people who don’t worry about me,” he said. “As far as women’s basketball in general, it’s like ice hockey. Does the casual fan enjoy ice hockey? Probably not. But ice hockey fans love ice hockey. We are who we are and we attract who we attract and we’ll go with that.”

Congratulations on completely missing the point, dip**** - and I didn't lose to Holy Cross. The University of Minnesota lost to them.

The people who actually possess reading comprehension would be glad to tell you that the purpose of my post was to point out that #1 seeds should not be "rewarded" by being shipped to a rival's rink for a regional - particularly when that rival is also in the tournament and will be playing there. Why on earth should the 2nd overall seed have to face the possibility / likelihood of a 2nd round matchup against one of its biggest rivals in the rival's rink? Sheer idiocy.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

The WCHA teams should not be rated in the Top Ten next at all. They fall on their face every year. Denver lossing to the 15th seed RIT and North Dakota falling on their sword just ****es me off.

Re: WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

The WCHA has the best top to bottom talent every single year, always carries the most teams into the tournament, yet the teams that are supposed to win find a way to fall short.

Yes I recognize it's not every team, every instance...but on the whole this is true. HC over UMTC @ Xcel in 2006, MSU over CC @ World in 2008, Miami over DU in 2009 and now the last team in RIT over DU.

WCHA Hockey = Big East Basketball

The WCHA is a weak conference and doesn't deserve the high ratings it gets each year.

Wow. If the WCHA is a weak conference then what constitutes a strong conference?? I'd like to see a few examples. And tell me what makes them strong relative to the WCHA...you know, that conference that wins about 1 out of every 2 NCAA Championships over time. And if you're going off of tournament performance by conference I think the Atlantic Hockey conference would be your winner by virtue of it winning 100% of its games so far.

The WCHA has the best talent virtually ever year. Each conference seems to have its ups and downs, and each team has its ups and downs. There were about 4 schools in the WCHA who entered the tournament with a very good chance of winning it all. 1 of those suffered a shocking upset, another lost to a pretty good Yale team, and another go knocked off by a fellow WCHA team.

Tell me who had as good a regular season as Denver and should've been rated higher heading into the tournament?? Where are these underrated teams who should've been ranked ahead of North Dakota entering the tournament?? And as for St. Cloud, there weren't a lot of teams that were going to beat Wisconsin tonight.
