WCHA 1st Round MTU @ UND - Huskies don't care Whioux we play, we have THREE Pietilas.

And flick off Hakstol. Petan forgot that part last night.

He did throw his stick down the hall though and if I remember correctly from last year when Kristo did it, Gopher fans think that should be a game suspension.

I agree that I would prefer not to see these hits if it meant that no one suffered injuries such as Johnstone's, but I just don't know how you could practically achieve that without eliminating checking all together.

Right, you'd have to say that a body check in open ice is a penalty.

I get that this would be hard to do, I expect that it won't happen and realize that most would disagree with my point.

That same check though along the boards most likely causes no injury at all due to the bracing effect of the boards.

What you have on these hits is the equivalent of someone (the puck carrier) skating full speed into an oak tree. That's the sort of collision that kills skiers when they go into a tree on the hill.

A car accident as another poster said, is a good comparison. This guy's (kid, really) supposed to go to class on Monday. I don't see it as worth it.

So how would all these supposed "hockey fans" from UND feel if Tech had taken out Kristo or Knight last night.
Tech lost a vital member of their team and they make light of it out of ignorant machismo.
As I said last night I hope Tech lights them up tonight on the only place that counts, the scoreboard.

He didn't try to take the guy out... he got injured on a very legal and very clean hit. I feel bad for the kid's injuries just as I would have if one of ours had been hurt. What I wouldn't have been is mad because of said clean hit. Hopefully tech can keep that idiot petan in control tonight and we can have a good game.

Kristo did more than that, and I don't think he should have had a game for it, but I thought it was a very poor showing of sportsmanship. Petan should be done for the series, IMO.

Re: WCHA 1st Round MTU @ UND - Huskies don't care Whioux we play, we have THREE Pieti

It's too bad when players incur injuries like this especially when it hurts like hell. But the video clearly indicates that Johnstone did see and somewhat measure the impact coming and then challenged MacWilliam by leaning into it. Johnstone didn't have anywhere near the base and leverage MacWilliam had on impact and Johnstone is 5'11" 175, while MacWilliam is 6'2" 230! Bad move on Johnstones part and 9/10 times he loses that battle on open ice.

One way to prevent an injury like this is learning how to AVOID these kinds of no-win collisions, instead of leaning into them. So the simple lesson is...put on the breaks, dump the puck and avoid the hit. Not to minimize Johnstone's injuries whatsoever, but this is a tough "Survival 101" teaching moment for him too, and a necessary one I might add if he wants to play hockey at this level and up.

Hard for me to argue with that point. But eliminating checking in open ice would be some pretty tough medicine to take, because while you don't often see open-ice hits as big as that one, you do see a lot of smaller open-ice checking throughout a game. And I don't know how you could draw a line without saying that all open-ice checking is against the rules.

We may as a culture eventually come to terms with and take that medicine, but I think we are a looong ways away from it.

I fully expect to see the Huskies provide retribution tonight and tomorrow to UND and hopefully make it a memorable last 2 games for the Sioux in the WCHA.
Need to play to the whistle and not get involved in the retaliation penalties. Tech needs their best effort tonight without Johnstone. Let's go Huskies, step it up!

Hopefully the retribution comes in the form of goals rather than taking dumb cheap shots.

Haha. You think there is going to be a game tomorrow. UND will sweep tonight so they can go ahead with their St. Patrick's Day party and dress Rocco up as a leprechaun.

Meaning we should expect someone go get picked up for a DUI or public intoxication and then turn around and play next week?

I agree, cheap shots are not what is needed now. UND is long overdue for a loss in the playoffs. We need a solid grind it out game tonight with tight D and good clean physical play especially on MacWilliam, Kristos and Knight!

Make sure the freshman aren't involved. They can't handle their alcohol.

OK, I conceded it was technically a legal hit, but I have to say it makes me a little sick when that result is cheered like the hospitalization itself is some kind of "moral victory" for UND (thankfully, by a small minority, but still). They have plenty of talent on their team - there should be no need to go down the road of cheering for severe injuries. The kid had a very promising future in hockey. :( That's a little sick.

Re: WCHA 1st Round MTU @ UND - Huskies don't care Whioux we play, we have THREE Pieti

Whatever the rules are, there are going to be judgment calls by the stripes. One change I am open to is treating "finishing checks" like hits on a quarterback. There are a lot of attempts by defenders to hit the opponent well after he has gotten rid of the puck. Always seemed like a chickenshat hits to me, but I know all teams practice it. Granted, most of those hits are mostly noise along the glass, but they are largely avoidable and don't add anything to the game IMO. I confess I don't know what the rule is in NCAA hockey on finishing checks, whether they are just enforced as boarding, charging, or interference penalties or what.

Nobody wants a guy to get hurt the way Johnstone was, but I was always taught to believe an clean open ice hit like that was a good hockey play. I've been on the receiving end of a few and never felt cheap-shotted. Of course, I never stepped into a bomb like that either. At that level, things move pretty fast, and those hits aren't that easy to make.

Really too bad that Johnstone had to get hurt and things get messy in the third, because Tech was playing dam good hockey for the first 40 minutes.

It's kind of an honor to play Michigan Tech in the last WCHA home game for the Sioux. There is a lot of rich history in that program. More than Minnesota even.

Ducks and covers head.

Trying to play physical with the Mac Truck didn't work real well last night, so I'd advise against doing that.

Big Mac scores a goal tonight. UND Rolls.

No one knew how hurt Mr. Brownstone was at the time. It was a good strong check and he had to leave. It just so happens the injuries are comparable to being in a head-on collision.

Honestly, ignore the **** out of Dirty. He's out to get a response, that's all he has had since he joined the board. Siouxsports (if you go there) also has a lot of idiots, but a majority of fans, just like at any normal hockey game for any team, is going to feel bad for the kid, clap when he gets up and shudder when they hear about the injuries sustained. Most people have decency when it comes to injuries regardless of team, Dirty just hasn't quite matured yet.

Re: WCHA 1st Round MTU @ UND - Huskies don't care Whioux we play, we have THREE Pieti

I think Tech has made strides this year, and I don't see them losing without a fight tonight or making it easy on UND like last night in the third period. Pearson won't accept that kind of play repeatedly. Tech has to use their emotion as fuel for a win. This team can do it, especially when you lose one of your best players. I bet the Pietalas, Khaira, Seigo, Kero, and Petan have a strong game tonight.

Thanks. I love you too. I never said I was happy the kid got injured, it sucks. But since you hate me, go for it and assume whatever you wish.
