Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

What a great weekend! I have to admit that with all the hype I was going to be happy with a loss and a tie. A win on Friday night, are you kidding me? That was awesome. Might be the best game I've seen in 5 years. And the Gut was rock'in. It'd be great to have prospective players see the Gut on a night like that.

No prospective players and I know this because Sneddon made sure to sell that point hard in that article talking about the new arena. It was a good weekend though I thought one point would be great they got two but I want to see consistency out of this team Friday they played very well and then just wore out on Saturday at the end trying to sit back and ride the storm taking bad penalties and not doing well on the powerplay. Same old same old. Lot of opportunity with the schedule going to 2014. 3 points at Maine this weekend would go a long way and then getting them at home a few weeks later and also getting by UMass the team will be in a pretty good spot I think if they can't get points against the competition for the bottom then no reason to think they will not be in the bottom by the end of the year. Encouraging so far but room for improvement

Who thinks we can get 4 points out of Maine? That'd be sweet. I think the team is playing well this year but still have some doubts. Apparently I'm not alone, I noticed UVM still didn't get any votes in the national poll.

It will be difficult for Vermont to sweep Maine. Maine works hard but they don't have many skilled players who can score against good goal tending and good defenses. They do rely on shooting the puck, which gives them many opportunities for scoring. Maine has a very good penalty kill, but the pp is weak so far. I think it will get better. I would think a split would be very likely.

Personally, I don't see that happening. While we appear to be much improved, at least so far, we haven't reached the point where we can go into someone else's building, on the road, and sweep them. And although Maine's fallen on some tough times, they're still plenty good and will play hard. I think 2 points is a reasonable expectation and anything more than that would be a bonus.

I think they need to get 4 points from ME. It will be a challenge to do so at Alfond. If both were games at the Gutt I would be more confident in the sweep. I expect at least 2 points, but I really believe that Cats can and should walk away with 4. I'm going to say 4-2 Friday and 3-2 Saturday.

ME isn't giving up many goals 2.57 / G but that includes 4 games against UMass and 1 against Bently, so it's not like they have faced the cream of the crop either. They aren't really scoring much either they have 18g in 7 games but that includes a 8 goal blow out at UMass. ME has 3 goals once, 2 goals (2x) and 1 goal (3x).

It's 4 points up for grabs and the Cats need these 4 points. It's an important weekend to keep thing rolling for the team.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

A few interesting stats in the HE write up for Vermont...

Sneddon is 1 win away from 150 at UVM and 200 Career wins...
The PK has killed off 20 straight penalties going back 4 games now. That stat right there is awesome.
A freshman has started in goal in the last 41 consecutive games.

Keep it up Cats, lets see if you can get to 30 straight kills...

I would be surprised if Hoffman doesnt get one game this weekend that said we have all been not very
good at predictiing when Sneddon will put in a different goalie.

If Santaguida starts on Friday night and has a good outing, I would be surprised if Hoffman plays on Saturday. Amazing stat on UVM Freshmen goal tenders.

I agree with this. At this point I think Santaguida has earned the start on Friday and I think it has become his job until he falters, at least in league play. With only 20 games and points so huge as long as Santaguida continues to play well he should be in net.

Right now I think it would be a huge mistake to take Santaguida out as long he continues to play well. The team is playing well in front of him, and has some confidence in him to come up big when it's needed. Even though he gave up an iffy goal Saturday, he also bailed out his team mates time and time again. The next 3 weekends are all league games and there are certainly points available for the taking against ME and UMass. These are points this team needs to get. Come December we start a stretch of non-league games (even though its still ME) and Hoffman can get some game action then, but putting him in a league game right now is a bit risky, and why risk it with Santa playing well.

Just to clarify, Maine's 8 goals were at Alfond Arena, and were scored on a Freshman goal tender making his first college appearance. Probably not an accurate picture of Maine's scoring ability.

Pretty confident, we'll see how that works out. I liked what I saw for most of 113 minutes last weekend. I did not like the final 7. Which team shows up this weekend and beyond remains in doubt to me. It's nice to see they can play as a cohesive group, move their feet, play sound positional hockey, but I'm still plenty nervous they might return to the prior version

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

That moron Hendrickson is picking a ME sweep. But hey, we've established he refuses to pick Vermont under any circumstances.

GO CATS GO!!

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Hoffman in net tonight, seems like an odd choice (or right on par for Sneddon?). Although he's playing well through 2 periods. Go cats!

Wish you could say the same of Walls and Lenz...how many dumb penalties they want to take?

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

And there is your game...1-0 Maine and UVM on the PK for the rest of the game...

And this is why I kept my optimism muted.............No offense to Maine but they have a pretty weak team this year and we can't capitalize. We can't even score....

Hamilton a bright spot again. Despite the giveaway on the 2nd Maine goal he had to press as they were shorthanded. There were a few good scoring chances so credit the Maine goalie but you are correct...the bigger issue for me tonight where the dumbass penalties.. Lenz, Walls, Brickley..
