Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

This is what I have been trying to say for four years. Sneddon lets certain kids get away with murder and holds others on a leash les than a mm long. Hockey players don't develop in that kind of environment. Brickley is a very average player now but not because of his own doing. He was an awesome prospect coming in but Sneddons system and lack of consistent discipline has sent him backwards. Same thing with luukko he is so talented but Sneddon wants him to be a goon. Uvm hockey right now is the most boring product I have seen. If you were a recruit, why would you want that? Decenzo doesn't even play and he was a tremendous playmaker prior to getting here. Anyone with any skill gets snuffed in this system or leaves. This spring you will hear about the greener grass coming in as freshman and Sneddon will begin his annual trek of throwing current players under the bus. It's a different numerator but same denominator every year. Get used to it because it's not gonna change. He doesn't know any other way.

Guess you called that one right.. sigh

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

as an outsider, just going off the most recent box score...he was listed on the 4th line. was he getting true 4th line minutes? perhaps he felt he deserved more playing time.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Anyone know why he chose to leave the program?

Didn't like it. Its a shame, he was a great spark plug on that 4th line and certainly could have played higher. Its a bit of an offensive loss, on a team with not much offense. I think he will be missed.

I think JD is probably right though in that he didn't like his minutes and where he was playing. Im sure he likely had it in his mind before the season started that if he didn't get time where he wanted it he was out the door.

As the article mentioned, he committed to BU decommitted and came to UVM. I think you have to take a hard look at kids like this. If they don't honor one commitment they probably aren't going honor other...

Regardless, its a loss for this team, but perhaps an opportunity for one of the frosh to pick it up in his place.

IIRC, in May 2012, after an off-ice incident, BU asked him to defer for a season and he turned them down. That's when he switched his commitment to UVM. Let's not lump him in with guys like Askew.

In any event. I don't have any fingers or toes left to keep track of the kids that have left. This one is a complete surprise because he was wallacks boy. This time of year it is most likely off ice.

To speculate its off ice is wrong unless you are referring to the classroom. The kids that do this care about hockey and not school. Dumb decision on his part. His career is over in a year and a half. If he wasn't happy at UVM he shoulda gone to juniors played this year and next then had 2 years of hockey. Would have given him 3 1/2 years more of hockey plus his degree plus a better chance to develop and maybe be a pro (disclaimer NCAA may only give him 2 1/2 years).

Not speculating anything just commenting in my experience when it happens in the middle of a semester it's an issue off ice.

Kind of shocked and surprised by the Polesello announcement as well. He was fun to watch when he was 'on'.

I remember seeing him in one of the exhibition games and thinking to myself 'This guy didn't put the work in during the offseason'. Anybody else notice that? Getting back for the fore-check...? He seemed to be lacking in speed. Smaller players find success in hockey east. Peter Lenes, Nathan Gerbe, Johny Gaudreau. All those guys have crazy skillz and creativity AND speed. I'm guessing work ethic too but I don't know that one way or the other.

Anyway, good luck to him.

Story updated with a quote from Sneddon. Didn't say much except for the customary wishing RP luck.

I think that Sneddon addressing him as "Mr Polesello" instead of Rob gives us a least a glimpse that maybe he didn't leave on good terms. Sneddon's quote seems overly tight and professional. I don't think he even referred to Justin Milo as Mr Milo....

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

No big loss IMO as he was not a good 2 way player, yes he had some scoring touch which this team does lack
but he was small and terrible in the corners and was very easy to take off the puck when he got contact. He didnt
come back this year bigger and faster like most Sophs do after a year with a good strength coach. At his size he
needs to be faster and 4th line was prob all he would have got. Truthfully unless he grows or really gets stronger
he will soon wish he got his education while it was cheap.

Now hearing on grapevine that another player might be leaving in December..ouch.

Who? If it's one of the group that rarely dresses that's insignificant. It's not any d man. Not a top 6 forward. This team is deeper and if guys are leaving cause they can't break in the lineup then that signifies the problem with prior teams, gutless competitors.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Polesello might be a bit of a loss but I'm in the whatever camp. He was easy to push off the puck and was not great defensively. If we had shootouts he might have been more useful. He probably did not like PT and did not like school. This is where the depth comes in.

We need 2 points this weekend. Will be tough.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Game Day !!

It looks like PC is going to be at the top of the heap this year led by an outstanding goaltender. At 7-1-1 one would think they'd be #1, the reason they aren't is due to the lack of competition they have faced. A win and a tie against Miami says that despite the lack of competition this team is for real. They seem to have developed more scoring to go with Gilles and that makes them dangerous.

I think that realistically this will be a tough weekend for the Cats, however its at the Gutt and I'm optimistic we will see more of the team that took a game from Notre Dame then the team the blew 2 points in Orono. I'm calling a split.

It will be interesting thought to see who if any of the upper classmen sit. IMO it would be a bit of a mistake. Sneddon should have read them the riot act over this past week. That said, if any of them are out their taking dumb penalties again they should be in the stands for Saturday nights game.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Lack of competition? They scheduled strong with Minnesota State and Miami but Minnesota State hasn't been doing too hot.

I guess those two NC games don't look too good anymore. PC offense has been hit or miss all year

Does it really matter who the player is or how much they play? What you are in essence saying is that UVM had had a great history recruiting "gutless competitors"? No other team in all of NCAA Hockey is anywhere close to UVM with the amount of departures in the last 4-5 years. Pick, choose and criticize the reasons for departure all you want. If you believe in every instance that it is the fault of the player because they were "gutless" you are so far off the mark its not funny. Think of who you are referring to with that stupid comment. It is a systemic problem and now unfortunately becoming a part of the culture at UVM and it points right to the top. Say what you want but all of those players ended up here in Burlington because Sneddon wanted them.

I was actually pleased to read Ted's article and Sneddons comments this week about the shake-up in the lineup. It is the first time I have seen Sneddon actually hold his supposed star players accountable in years. Maybe he is finally coming to the conclusion that the lack of success over the past few years points more directly at him and less at the players. I applaud it and would not change the line-up again until they lose.
