Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

If that makes you happy you have about three more days to enjoy this season.
.

It made my day. Today. Not the season. How about a little bit of optimism? It's kinda like saying well Jay got snow, but it's ****ty to ski on.... It isn't even November yet

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

This was VPR hockey preview
"UVM welcomes Notre Dame after knocking off Penn State 5-2 last weekend in the Hockey East-Big Ten Challenge in Philadelphia. Coupled with a loss and a tie at No. 5 North Dakota to open the season a month ago, the Catamounts are on solid footing to begin conference play.

Coach Kevin Sneddon, beginning his 11th season, knows his team must hit the ice skating in full stride, as the league schedule has been reduced from 27 to 20 games with almost half of those coming before the Christmas break.

“It’s the first weekend of November and we’re essentially entering the playoffs – that’s how we’ve presented it to our players,” Sneddon said. “There is going to be a lot of excitement, with this being our 50th season, a lot of alumni coming back, and welcoming Notre Dame into the league. But the bottom line is these are four important points.”

The larger question hanging over Vermont is whether it can duplicate the success that carried it to the Frozen Four in 2008-09 or are the Catamounts stuck in a down cycle that has seen them fall to 25-66-15 the last three seasons and become a non-factor in post-season?

“I’ve always believed in sustaining excellence, so these dips have been tough to take,” Sneddon said. “There were some recruiting mistakes and some coaching mistakes. But Vermont has a great fan base in a great college hockey town and we have everything in place to be successful.”

This season’s roster carries as many freshmen (10) as upperclassmen, but Sneddon likes the mix. Connor Brickley and Chris McCarthy turned down pro contracts to return for their senior seasons and provide both leadership and experience.

Newcomers Mario Puskarich, Brendan Bradley, Brady Shaw and Mike Stenerson were prolific scorers for their junior teams and should boost the Catamount attack immediately.

“We haven’t scored much and we’ve struggled on the power play (UVM is 2-for-23 with the man advantage this season),” Sneddon said. “These kids have had success and will contribute offensively immediately.”

Last winter a lack of depth in goal forced Brody Hoffman to play in all 36 games. He will return to action this weekend after missing the first month with an injury. In his absence, Vermont has found a capable alternative in freshman Mike Santaguida, who has stopped 93 of 102 shots in three games.

“There were times last year that Brody needed a break and we just couldn’t give it to him,” Sneddon said. “There’s no question that Santaguida gives us options we didn’t have before.”

Vermont was picked to finish ninth out of 11 teams in both the Hockey East coaches and media preseason polls. Sneddon understands the thinking, but doesn’t agree with it.

“I fully believe we can be a lot better than that,” he said. “I thought we took a little step forward last season (going from six wins to 11) and I think we can take a much bigger step this winter.”"

Interesting that Brickley and McCarthy were both offered pro contracts. Especially Brickley, since he hasn't put up stellar offensive numbers and has been hurt much of his career so far. That said, glad they decided to return. Cats need McCarthy to have a big year as well as Brickley.

Also, the article indicates Hoffman will see the ice this weekend. I have to think that Santaguida plays one game as well. His .911 s% looks good considering 2 of his 3 games have been against North Dakota where he face 33 and 36 shots by a top 5 team.

Have to realistically think the cats get swept this weekend but the optimist in me thinks we could see a split.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Article on a new arena.... basically nothing is new and there is no set time period.

http://blogs.burlingtonfreepress.co...eddon-addresses-issue-of-potential-new-arena/
Thanks for the link JCarter. A couple of thoughts about the two articles. First, Tom Gustafson, the VP of university relations and administration, is quoted as saying "We've just begun the process of engaging donors in major gift conversations, and so far have one confirmed commitment of $1 million." You've just begun that process?!?!? Really?!?!? And we've been talking about the need for a new facility for how many years now? Seriously, at least ten, and probably more like fifteen. Good to know someone remembered to try and raise some money for it.

Second, maybe this idea of hiring a management company for the non-existent facility really is the way to go. While a new rink would be sweet, a new management team is the next best thing! And it could potentially help with recruiting. The conversation would go something like this: "Sure those other schools have beautiful new arenas, but son have you thought once about who's managing those rinks? Here at UVM, we believe our management team is second to none. They're honing their skills even as we speak, and by golly when that rink's built, they're gonna be scary good!"

It's good to know people are actually thinking about the new facility and, hopefully, one day it will come to fruition. But if the over/under on UVM playing their first home game in a new rink is 7 years, I'd have to go with the over.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

BTW, those 50th Anniversary game jerseys the team's going to be wearing this weekend are way cool! Kind of like a "home" version of the Frozen Fenway jerseys we wore a couple of years ago.

With the liberals running the show in VT we'll be lucky if the entire state does not go bankrupt soon

You do realize that of the top 50 spending districts (25% of all Federal Spending) in congress 37 are controlled by the GOP and 17 of those by the Tea Party? Bankruptcy comes in all forms... be careful what you wish for...

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Not to make this thread political, but at this stage of the game it doesn't really matter whether its the right or left in office. Neither one seems to be able to figure out that expenditures must equal or be less then revenue. As long as that continues to be ignored we are screwed.

Back to hockey

GAME DAY!!

Hendrickson and Connelly are both picking a Notre Dame sweep this weekend in close games. Would love to see them wrong again. Gutt ought to be hopping tonight. Notre Dame, first home game of the 50th anniversary season, alumni present and some sweet jerseys.

The Cats need to come out strong and get the crowd going and then keep it rolling.

I think we see Hoffman in net tonight. A mistake IMO, as I think Santaguida has earned the nod Friday and then base Saturday on how tonight plays out.

While Connelly's been known to show some love for us, Hendrickson wouldn't pick us if we were undefeated and #1 in the country. I still think we'll win one of the games, hopefully tonight.

If you give up more SH goals than you score PP goals does your PP go negative?

Your wish has been granted! :D Atta boy Cats! Way to knock off the number 2 team in the country!

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Hello ND, welcome to Hockey East. This is not the CCHA.

Nice game by the Cats. Thought the cats were superior in 1st period, 2nd favored ND slightly, and 3rd was a draw until Puskarich sniped the winner. Accolodes to every Catamount, they all played well. Thought they won most of the wall battles and races to loose pucks were neutral. Passing on the tape for both teams, good team speed both ways. Cats break out was on and off but good speed out of the zone frequently.

Cats blew a couple nice odd man breaks with offsides calls and missed the net a bunch (shot totals misleading in some ways, Cats missed a lot of nets with good opportunities trying to pick corners).

PK looked good and PP moved the puck around well. Either that was an aberration or we have a legitimate team that is going to be fun to watch.

Overall really really impressed by the Cats effort compared to the last few years, very encouraging. Freshmen looked like they belonged and the Frosh line actually played the wall and cycled real well. Six frosh in the lineup I think it was. Very encouraging.

Historically, when up against high end teams at home the Cats lose on Friday and then give a huge effort on Saturday and squeak out a tie. ND will come out with amped up effort Saturday but they can't get these two points back this year. Would be great to get a point or two Saturday but have to feel great grabbing two points Friday.

Go Cats

You beat a glorified D3 team, but get excited if you want. Notre Dame is going to eat you for lunch.

First it was

"1 point from a UND squad that looks like the worst edition in many years is nothing to get giddy about.....although for UVM it probably is the highlight of the year."

then the above quote

Boy you must hate being wrong all the time. Cant wait to hear the excuses

bahaha the TROLL is eating his words for lunch. Love it. He has no excuses. I saw the game live. UVM won puck battles. They won board battles. They had NUMEROUS chances and open looks to tack on. Crisp passing and great cycling. One word: owned. That being said, Notre dame will come out hungry as ever tomorrow night. They are obviously a fantastic program and it's great having them in hockey east!

I'm flattered I was in your head all week and congrats on the regular season win you don't see many of them at UVM anymore.

Sorry but the only people you really bother is those living with you, I was too busy enjoying the Sox this week anyway.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Nice effort, I really can't see Hoffman starting today. Have to imagine Santaguida earned the start. UVM just flat out played Notre Dame last night. They really did battle for every puck.

A few silly penalties, but there are always going to be some here and there. Getting the puck on net seemed to be a struggle, but Summerhays is a good goaltender and Sneddon said they were focusing on off angle shots so that's too be expected.

I thought Brickely was awesome on the defensive side, really saved a couple grade a chances from happening. I am really impressed with Hamilton, Shaw and Bradley. And the line up is deep and solid all around. I think I would replace Markison (who has earned a place on the all milk carton team) with someone but outside of that... Just a great all around game.
