Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

As others have said, that was some very solid play by the Cats last night against a very good team. The game winning goal by Puskarich was a thing of beauty. In the past, I don't think we've had many players who would have even thought to take that shot, much less pull it off. And he's a freshman! Things are looking up.

nice job UVM. ND will learn quickly that there are no easy wins in HE, even for those with lofty rankings, especially on the road

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Interesting first 2 periods....bad goal let up by UVM and ND has had a few good chances..

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Some observations from a HE newbie:

1. Your goalie is outstanding.
2. Your FREE video feed is amazing.
3. Your PBP and color guys are waaay more professional and higher quality than almost any others in D1 college.
4. If UVM is indicative of HE, my team is going to struggle more than I expected this first year.

Good luck the rest of the way and congrats on your golden anniversary.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Feel like the Cats let one slip away last night. Seemed like after we got up 2-0, we were playing not to lose, instead of playing to win. Disappointing for sure, but would have been happy with 2 points prior to the weekend. Onward to Maine.

Split is a good outcome relative to expectations going in, but does feel like the Cats grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory leading with <7 minutes to play and a sweep within sight. If they can shore up their game for 60 minutes and play at the level of the first two periods all season they will be a serious threat for home ice. big if's I guess but overall the chemistry, team d, speed, passing, board work, PK, it all looked a lot better than it has in a few years. None of the lines are devastating but they have four lines that they can roll - team depth is much better than recent years. The all frosh forward line looks strong, I like it. Overall very encouraging.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Santa has played very well thru 5 games but probably will have to split time next weekend after that bad 2nd goal, bad goals
really take alot out of a team.

We have played 4 games versus top 5 teams and I dont feel we got outplayed in any of them. and after the last few seasons
poor starts 2-2-1 looks pretty good. Now they need to play the same way versus average teams and not regress.

Love the PK not sold yet on PP but at least its moving the puck better and shooting more. Getting into the zone and setting up
is still the biggest problem.

Hate to admit it but this weekend was probably the best officiated set of games we have seen for a good long time. Only a few
marginal calls and those were split both ways. No OMG what is he smoking calls

I watched the 2nd game and I thought the Freshman line played pretty well. McCarthy had some bad giveaways..almost cost them.

Overall I agree that they really haven't been outplayed. I really liked Hamilton's play. Aggressive when he needed be and played a smart series overall.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Tough loss Saturday. It was unfortunate as the Cats were very solid through the first two periods and through much of the third. There were a couple of times Santaguida saved the Cats. Obviously he would like to have that 2nd goal back especially but considering he made outta no where stops several times throughout the game have to give him a little slack.

That said, two bad give aways led to two goals that cost them the game. That's a tough pill to swallow. Have to wonder about TOI impacting some of that. While the Cats are deep, especially at forwards, Bruneateau and Hamilton are on the ice a lot. They are obviously the go to D but I still wonder if that third goal giveaway was in part to Bruneteau being wiped. It was uncharactistics and if memory serves he also gave one up right before that too.

Overall I think we have to be ecstatic with the opening weekend. They IMO played above expectations and well enough to have earned a sweep. But realistically I think most of us thought a tie would be as good as could be expected, so a split is a nice outcome and mentally/confidence wise this team should be in good shape.

As noted we have played 80% of our games against top 5 teams and have a .500 record to show for it. That's not so bad, and much better then a year ago.

PP still struggling but they are at least making progress, there was a super nice give and go from behind the net to Brickley that I thought was a nice play, and very creative. PK was perfect on the weekend against the countries #2 so that bodes well. Lots of guys blocking shots and really making things tough.

Summerhays is a stud, 1.XX GAA coming in, the Cats put 2 on him both nights and would have scored another two a night on a lesser goalie. He made some very big saves.

I think we are in good shape. Need to the sweep at ME to keep it rolling before taking on another top 5 team.

Welcome to the toughest league in college hockey Notre Dame. Good luck moving forward, we want the win to count at the end of the season :)

What a great weekend! I have to admit that with all the hype I was going to be happy with a loss and a tie. A win on Friday night, are you kidding me? That was awesome. Might be the best game I've seen in 5 years. And the Gut was rock'in. It'd be great to have prospective players see the Gut on a night like that.

Updated RPI for HE teams

Providence #4
Northeaster #9
Boston College #11
Notre Dame #14
Vermont #16
Lowell #18
Boston U #24
Maine #31
UMass #37
UNH #41
Merrimack #43

Of note, UVM's high RPI ranking is due mainly to the SOS which stands at #10 currently. Anyways HA!!! to snwbdr... I get another whole week of being happy the Cats are higher then Lowell ;)

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Enjoy the week JCarter. I am certainly encouraged with the play this weekend. Hopefully they put the final 7 minutes of crappy play Saturday in a box and bury it forever. Not sure they can improve on the 113 minutes of excellent hockey but if they can they are going to slay some ghosts and some giants this year. I was unsure if it was Hamilton or Bruneteau that coughed up the puck and cost them, glad to hear it was not Hamilton, he is looking like a stud

Great weekend for the cats. Didn't see Saturdays game but clearly the pk was the difference maker on the weekend. We still take too many stick penalties and penalties away from the play but if the pk keeps firing like this it won't matter. Gonna be tough to keep wining scoring 2 goals a night though. Still think we need to open it up a little more and fire who ever is in charge of the power play. It simply sucks right now and as many on here know you can't go far without a good pp

To be honest I'm encouraged with the offense. They scored 2 goals each night, but Summerhays is an elite goal tender. After the weekend his GAA is 1.49 with a .936 sv%. Last season through 36 games he sported a 2.01 GAA. So 2 goals is all this guy ever gives up and a lot of times less.

Another factor to keep in mind is Notre Dame is stacked with 11 NHL draft picks, including 3 d-men, and they are a defensive minded team. They have 9 seniors as well. Notre Dame is a highly skilled, older team with a star goaltender, I don't think many teams are going to put more then 2 pucks in net against them, so I see 2 goals by the Cats as actually a good thing.

What I learned about ND:

1. Your goalie is outstanding
2. Your defensemen are HUGE
3. You have really shiny helmets

Good luck the rest of the way, I'm sure you will be near the top of the HE

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Good weekend for the Cats. At some point we have to get off pointing at the one mistake/turnover/bad goal as the reason we lost the game. There seems to be this expectation from Sneddon that two goals is enough to win every game. It's not. It's also frustrating to watch. Summerhays was great, I hope we can net more pucks going forward, but I am not holding my breath with Sneddon behind the bench. Hopefully, he will prove me wrong this year.

Re: Vermont 2013-2014 Season Thread : The Golden Year

Looking forward to seeing the Cats at Alfond Arena this weekend. Your freshman goal tender (Santaguida) appears to be a good one. Congratulations to UVM on their win against ND.
