UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

Re: UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

What.....no Fire Sneddon posts? But seriously, good for you guys. Good start on making up for HEA's appalling OOC record of last season.

Happy with the win obviously, but I'm not sure a game where the opposing team put 50 shots on your goalie is enough reason to give Sneddon much leeway.

To be ABSOLUTELY fair....I think that shot discrepancy can be explained with two things: power plays and score effects. When you're trailing for most of the game as the Wolverines were you tend to put a bunch more shots on the net, and they also had 20 power play shots on goal (assuming I'm counting right).

It's still concerning - PK shot suppression is absolutely something that needs to be worked on - but I'm just going to enjoy the moment and not be a critic for once in my **** life haha

That was a fun game and props to Mich for the free feed.

Optimistic that the goals are repeatable. Looked like real hockey and something that can be built upon. Goal 4 was situational. Still pretty, but score and time related. First three seemed very natural in the course of any game.

D zone play seemed better early. Limiting grade A chances will help the season. But WAY too many break downs as the game went on and that kind of performance can't be sustained by a winning team. No way. Cats stole that game.

My takeaway - optimistic about scoring. Saw some better D zone play early but still SO FAR to go developing consistent sustainable play in HE.

Big win and it is a win. In the bank. Better to be building from there than a moral loss.

Agreed. There's still plenty of work to be done, but starting with a win like that has to give the guys confidence. On the road, in one of college hockey's most hostile atmospheres, on their homecoming weekend, against a team many pegged as a national contender.

Agreed RE: power play SOG skew. I also thought the calls were more than a little generous in Michigan’s favor. I can’t imagine that’s not a top 3 nationally first power play unit this year; completely stacked with talent (including possibly THE best player in college hockey in Hughes). Also wanted to agree about Carter Long, he looked poised and confident all game against a great team, in a tough place to play.

Have to think that win will help pairwise at the end of the season. Nice to see the forwards clicking already.

The win, as opposed to a loss, will definitely help with pairwise, but I think it's way too early to assume we'll even be concerned with our pairwise ranking at the end of the season. Nice win by the Cats, but we're still a long way from being an NCAA tourney team.

Yeah. Let's not wind up prisoners of the moment. One game at a time. The expectations are still low from the fanbase BUT we've got as good a start as we could hope for.

That said...IF we beat QPac this weekend...we've got a very accessible 4 game stretch coming up. @UNH and @Brown, then back home for two against UConn. This is a great opportunity to build momentum and make us believe.

Lighten up Francis. Just observing that a win over Michigan is probably going to be pretty rare this year.

Five goals is a good night and maybe we are going to see a more stable offense this year. With fewer unknowns on defense maybe the offense won't need to focus on shot blocking and can work on puck possession and quickly transitioning through the neutral zone. I think a lot of talent on offense has been wasted the last few years to shore up a shaky defense. Has the defense turned a corner?

Re: UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

The defense has not turned the corner. The amount of grade A chances in that game are not sustainable. But there were signs of incremental growth early in the game. Signs that there may be improvement in D that can be built upon. Anyone watching knows that could easily have been a 3-6 loss. But it wasn't. Some great performances. We will see what the boys do moving on.

Re: UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

This year's defense is sooooo far ahead of where UVM started last year.

This year's defense is sooooo far ahead of where UVM started last year.

I am not attempting to argue the point. None of us needs to because it will all play out in the following months. I will point to game 1 last year where a 3-0 shutout (I believe) did show some lapses that we all saw get more and more egregious as the year went on.

For the record as I said several times, I AM optimistic. I believe second year growth will occur. At least 1 and maybe another first year D should help. Returners have shown ability to play. I am optimistic. But from what I saw, the 50 shots concerns me less than the number of grade A's.

As we all know, defensive zone play also includes forwards contributing. I saw less chasing in the first half of that game. So I am optimistic - but not near ready to say "turned the corner." But hope they have.

Don't even get me started on neutral zone play ;-) I am hopeful to see solid, responsible D zone play this weekend.

And we have more votes than Lowell. That means we can resume the flame war with them from 4-5 years ago! Calling JCarter.... :D;)

As much as I'd like to delve back into a flamefest with UML... the amount of material is still way too low. More votes from some notoriously inaccurate predictors just isn't going far. Maybe soon though...

Re: UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

I can’t believe I charged my iPad for this 😐. Tough to sandwich this game between Michigan and Quinnipiac. Hopefully they can get fired up for periods 2 and 3.

Re: UVM 2018-19: This is so sad Alex play Esposito

I'm not gonna hot take, it's literally the most pointless exhibition game ever. When you've already played a game it kinda defeats the purpose of playing the exhibition, plus with a quick turnaround and a game on Saturday you don't want to risk injury.
