UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Thanks for the goal video jcarter.

Minnesota is a young team as well (and didn't play an exhibition game) but great start to the season!

I caught the radio stream and it really sounded like we managed to shut down the passing lanes through the neutral zone and turn that into some good offense. Headed up to Burlington Friday for the home opener vs Omaha... excited to see the Cats live for the first time since TD Garden!

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Goaltending is far and away my biggest concern. While Santa has decent numbers he is just too small to win the tough games. I hope Packy can contribute. Otherwise I think goaltending will be the Cats problem this season, particularly in front of a youngish D.

Santa had a strong performance and I hope he does keep it up all season but I like others have some long term concerns about him going forward he is going to need to come through in the "big game" becasue I don't know that he really has - only the first real game but hope this is a start.

Santa has won multiple big games already, I'm not sure how going into his 3rd season it's still a concern.

His Freshman year he had:

2-1 win over a highly ranked Notre Dame team
2-2 tie AT North Dakota in his second collegiate game
Two 3-2 wins against eventual HE champions UML including a do or die playoff game

As a Sophomore:

He had a 2-1 win over eventual national champions PC
A 3-2 OT win versus BC
a 3-2 OT win against Maine in a Game 3 playoff

And you can now add in a 3-0 shut out at Minnesota.

I'm not sure what you fellas consider to be a big game, but IMO Santa has won plenty of big games. I think It's time to give that argument a rest... along with him being too small. He is marginally smaller then Rob Madore who obviously was large enough to win some big games and John Muse who carried BC to a National Championship. Size has very little to do with whether you can be a successful goalie at the college level.

As for Munson I don't see him really pushing for the starting job. He was brought in late as a replacement for Hoffman and his numbers in the NAHL were good but not great. I doubt he'll see more then a handful of games.

Regardless... let's all just be happy with a very good OOC win to start the season and look forward to an extremely tough UNO team.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Lots of movement in the polls as it wasn't a good week to be a top ranked team. Minnesota's loss dropped them down to #15, and on the flip side UNO made huge strides up to number 3 and NoDak moved into 1st place with the Eagles choking this weekend.

UVM broke in to the polls as well at #20.

So up next #3 UNO for two followed by #1 NoDak for two. First 5 games all against top 10 teams ...

Was not surprised that Minn is still ahead of us but it still makes you laugh.

And what are the 7 guys who gave BC #1 votes right after they lost to RPI thinking.

I don't believe many of them think about it at all. They just pick the usual suspects and plug them in. Polls are a bit of a joke as far as I'm concerned. If you are outside the usual suspects then it means something because you have least gained their attention. But for BC,BU,ND,Minny.... they get votes just for past accomplishments.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Fun 1st game!
Just re-watched on DVR.
Curious to see what/any changes in lineup after that pretty solid effort.
While Minny had a few small forwards, they seem about the same size as the UNO roster (it looks like minny has slightly bigger d-men..)
I feel spoiled with that nice of an away broadcast.

mostly agree and I pay more attention to the pairwise, which would be about as useful as the polling method at this point. A couple more weeks and the pairwise should be good to follow.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

BTW - speaking of pairwise, I hope Minny has great success in the Big 10 to boost UVM's benefit from the win. That's the kind of game that could really benefit us come NCAA time. Whoa, still way too early in the season to reference the tourney. This also highlights the benefit of playing teams that are generally awesome. We could have had our first games against RPI and Army. A weekend split won't benefit you much, assuming the usual, but that lose can really hurt.

Let's see who is willing to gamble... Here is bet that I will make for like $100. If we split or better the next two weekends we are going to the NCAA's.

I too got to watch that broadcast and it was pretty swank.
I give full credit to UVM for the win as they scored 3 and Minnesota did not score. That said, for those who did not see the game, Minnesota had at least 8 golden scoring chances where they shot wide. Had the pucks been on the net, the outcome may have been different. Nice to play them early as the freshmen grab the sticks tight and shoot wide. A shot on net, even if it did not go in, creates rebound opportunities, and none of Privittera, Hamilton, Phillips and Lee are going to muscle anyone off the puck, although Privittera will die trying.
Unfortunately for the rest of the team, I would make no changes for this weekend. If Lee gets pushed around, maybe insert Kearley. We have to see Coughlin, O'Neill and Bowen bang in our smaller ice surface.
I am cautiously optimistic for the weekend.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Anyone else feel like we lost a lot of faceoffs in that game?
I think that can go a long way towards tilting the puck possession game in UVM favor.
As good as the forecheck was working, it seems like a ton of extra effort would be saved if they had the puck just a bit more.
But the 4 lines seemed to help with the energy levels.
The Minnesota team came out with a little bit more jump, but luckily missed on some one-timers early.
UVM's tenacity for 60 min will keep them in most games it would seem.

Excited for the next big test!

If you check the official stats the Cats were in fact dismal on faceoffs and that has to be corrected, and soon.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Where do you get the 'official' stats?
I did look on Hockeyeastonline and saw lots of stats I hadn't noticed before.
Only Puffer and Petruzzelli .500 or better.

Sweet goal for Miller in last nights Bruins game. It's really nice to see some Alumn having success in the NHL and to see a steady trickle of guys making it. Sneddon has now seen Mitchell, Miller, Stalberg and Brickley reach the big league. By the end of the year we should also be able to add Paliotta to that list and possibly McCarthy. Vermont's 5 alumn ranks 4th in HE behind BC,BU,and Maine. Glad to see those guys have some success.
