UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Mostly was saying if next year is UVM going to carry 4 goalies if that Lekkas(?) kid arrives next year. I know he is here for emergencies but gosh you'd hope he could have worked hard and learned to use his size in addition to skill just kind of feel having that size and not trying to work on your skill to get in games is sort of a waste - and no doesn't mean i think goalies have to be tall but certainly and advantage that could be used in addition to skill.

That's a really good question regarding Lekkas. I suspect they will in fact carry 4 goalies. One may move on to a DIII school as we've seen before, but I think Hoff put a wrench in the machinery when he left and they brought in Munson last minute to replace Hoff. I'm thinking Lekkas comes in next year, they carry 4 goalies and then Santa is gone and Lekkas takes over.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Ok. Santa being small is detrimental when he is screened and in mad scrambles because he simply does not fill as much of the net and when he goes down there is too much room over his shoulders. The bigger problem with him is the soft goals where he seems to be caught napping. Small size should equal quickness. I was always more comfortable with Hoffman in net although he was caught short side off the post too often.... they need Soucy this year

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

I suspect nodaks 3rd string goalie is better than our first. We will know soon.....

Drink your hateraid today?

Couldn't ask for much more from Santa. Shaw and Irwin were missing. There is a slim chance we can get a goal tomorrow. I got the feeling Sneddon was experimenting and it didn't work. I wasn't too impressed with Abromsen. Skeptical of a prospects to beat these guys.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Sneddon sat Hamilton, Shaw and Irwin tonight and dressed lots of freshman. Shuffled all the lines. Santaguida kept them in the game. This is going to be a fun team to watch for the next few years.

Maybe sometime during that time-span they will score a goal. Yes, I'm a little bummed with how things are starting out, but it's also been a bit of an eye-opener, in that we're clearly not on the same level with teams like UNO and UND. We can hang with them for a bit, but over the course of a game, our weaknesses will be exposed. I had the team picked to finish 6th in HE and I still think that's possible. We'll see Thursday night when they suit up against NU. In the meantime, I'd be pretty shocked to see us get a win tonight.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Well that's a bummer. This team has some work to do and although it is disheartening to get swept 2 weekends in a row I think we need to be realistic too. This was one of the toughest 5 game stretches anyone has. We walked away 1-4 what was the prediciton before the games got under way... 2-3 maybe?

I don't think anyone thought we were the best team in the country and we clearly are not. When it comes to the top teams we can give them a run for their money, but we are still a step down from being in the top tier. That however doesn't mean the team can't be successful. They need to put it behind them and move on and step up the play for the rest of the season. The OOC records means they need to take advantage where they can for the rest of the season. Like taking 4 points from a struggling NU team.

On a positive note Coughlin now has 4 points in 5 collegiate games. Not bad for a freshman playing his first 5 games against the best teams. Now we just needs Shaw and Bradley to step it up and start potting some goals so it's not just Mario's line that is producing. Or better yet, get them back on the line with Mario and let J. Priv and Coughlin be a second scoring threat.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Some thoughts after 5 games.....

1. This weekend came down to one thing TALENT. We showed Sat and last week that we can play with the best but as long as the other team has 10 NHL picks
to our 1 we are playing at a disadvantage that leaves so little room for error. While we can play as hard as these teams and have a great gameplan or system that works
better then they do it too often comes down to how much they bury the chances they get and we struggle too.

2. I wonder why they have yet to name the Alt Captains, 5 games in and still no players wearing an "A"

3. Cant say enough about how hard Jarred Priv is working and love the scoring but I dont think he is the answer to who centers Mario. Mario is a pure sniper but needs someone to
set him up and I didnt see any of that last weekend.

4. Santa has been anywhere from good to great but he needs help as alot of the goals have come from major breakdowns or poor D on those long passes.

5. Would we be better off 3-2 having played a few weaker teams than 1-4 running the gauntlet? We will know after this weekend.

Last year there were no alternate captains so I don't think we will see them this year either. Why we don't is a mystery and defies logic but must be a coaching masterstroke.
As long as they keep trotting out the freshmen, especially on D, this team will continue to lose. I just don't get it.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Three of North Dakota's goals on Saturday night were the direct result of Hamilton, Irwin, and/or Shaw coasting in the defensive zone. Liked Friday night's line up much better than Saturday's. The only change I would make to Friday's line up is dressing McKinney and sitting one of the freshman forwards.

Shaw in particular seemed lackadaisical to me Sat night, not the response I would expect after being 'sent a message' and being benched Friday night. I'd be surprised to see him in the lineup Thursday night. Perhaps he is injured...?

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Not sure how fluid the lineup will be for the conference matchups. I would guess an identity is starting to form and hopefully a style of play will emerge. We were chasing our tails for the last 4 games. The grit is there with just about all the guys. Offensive spark is showing from the youngsters, now how will it come together?

NU is in the same spot it seems trying to right the ship....

Go Cats Go!

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Make or break time.... if the Cats can't take 4 points from NU then we will be lucky to make the HE playoffs let alone the NCAA's. With Lowell coming in next a sweep of UVM by NU would be the end of it... These are easily attainable points, and those are the ones you have to have.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

I'm heading to Matthews tonight... huge game for us obviously.

It's been said but the D has to improve (I'm not sure we have the talent/ experience back there to do it though). Too many mistakes exiting our zone and chasing the puck around against ND last weekend, missed all sorts of backdoor cuts while puck watching against UNO. I guess my top 6 right now would be:

Pattyn, Privitera, Abramson, Lee, Kearley, Philips.

Looking at that we really need these young guys to figure it out... I have been harsh on Santa in the past but for the most part these guys have hung him out to dry this season.

J. Privitera, Forgione, Coughlin, and Petruzelli are making a bigger contribution than I expected which is a positive.

I would suspect that being on for 4 of the 5 goals against UND will get Kearley a seat in the stands and let Hamilton continue to play. I just hope that they figure out that Pattyn and Abramson have to take the load of the pk time as none of the other d are particularly effective in the defensive zone, save for Priv the odd time.
I hope that Sinkbeil, Darrar and McKinney get to play as they were a great energy line on Saturday.
The Cats have a chance to take 2 here. Let's hope that they do.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Nice gutty win.
Tough to give up 5 on 3 and 5min major in same game though.
Hope tomorrow night helps turn the corner!

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

A wins a win.

I like that the UVM goals were opportunistic but they were to an extent gifts from NU. You need to take advantage of those chances when they happen, and UVM did, but they can't rely on those chances. Both the first and third goals shouldn't have gone in.

First goal against Santa was a bit of a softie, second there was a good screen going but he was lucky that first goal didn't cost the cats a point. In his defense, the team needs to be more disciplined. You can NOT be taking a 5 min major in the third period of a game you are winning 2-0. I like Abramson, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him riding the pine Saturday.

Still glad to see them take 2 HE pts on the road and get back into the win column. I think a loss would have been devestating to moral so this was a big win. With UML a loss very well could have led to a 1-8 start to the season. Hopefully they can come out strong Saturday, grab another 2 points and a little more confidence heading into another tough series against a top tier team.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Never thought I'd be this disappointed with 3 HE pts...

Northeastern out played UVM last night badly.... the NU offense (or should I say the UVM D) had the game wrapped up for NU. Thankfully, the NU D and G gave it right back.

Happy to see Sneddon's remarks after the game, he is right, we can't give away games and the D needs to be way better at taking care of the puck.

Positives :

They fought back and didn't let NU's 3rd period goals deflate them. In fact they upped their game at the end.
Shaw and Bradley finally made the score sheet, hopefully the monkey is off their back.
J. Priv has taken the next step. He is going to be last seasons Shaw.
Petruzilli is showing he can put the puck in the net. That was a bit of a fluke goal, but it's goood hockey sense. He is a threat whenever he's on the ice.

Negatives :

The D, what is their to say. They were particularly bad right down through to Pattyn. Hamilton has to find the Pine until he can be better. Had a nice shot at the end and does contribute offensively but man he is a liability on the ice. Time to move him to forward or the bench, there are more defensively sound guys.

Posts, In a game of inches this game could have been a blowout either way. I think the iron stopped nearly as many shots as Roy in the last 10 minutes. The cat's didn't deserve to win the game, but with just a little bit of puck luck they could have.

They have a week to figure out how to play hard and smart in their own zone...It's really disappointing, how can I even talk smack on the Lowell thread with the way they are playing. :( A commanding sweep of the Huskies and I would have had something to go off, but eeking by... at least Lowell tied twice at MC.
