UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

I razzed Hendrickson a bit on Twitter after the Minny game. Asked what it would take for him to ever pick the Cats. I hope I didn't curse us!

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

I would have picked Minny if I were him. The part about coming back in tatters was a bit much though and probably earned him some razzing. having said that, I think UNO is probably a tougher opponent. Will be an interesting weekend. go Cats

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Team didn't show up in the first. D left some UNO players all alone on the doorstep and that decided things. They scored some nice goals (at least 3 Santa had little chance to stop).

Team showed a lot of fight, got physical... and looked certain to tie with about a minute left on a deflection but Thompsan made a great save.

Coughlin impressed me with his awareness, size, board play, and passing. Forgione and petruzelli also stood out. Lee can handle the puck. Lost a lot of offensive zone faceoffs though... Not sure what the official numbers were.

I thought a split would be a good weekend before the game and think the team can get it done tonight.

My two cents:

The Negatives: That first goal was on Hamilton, and was ugly. I've seen people with broken legs get back faster than that, and he was just cleanly beaten to the puck by someone who wanted it more.
Second goal was on Santa, he should have had it. Otherwise he was fantastic the rest of the night.
Including the goal, how many times did we get burned on break aways with a quick pass threw the neutral zone. 4 or 5?
Took some bad penalties. There's no reason to hit a guy in the numbers and take a boarding penalty, or hit someone clearly after they got rid of the puck and draw an interference call.
It seemed like Sneddon has gone back to dump and chase on the power play instead of trying to keep possession. Aside from the 5 on 3 they score on, most looked pretty bad.

The Positives: The offense looked great, every time UNO touched the puck we had a man smothering them. Lots of good chances in close, just couldn't get another one past a good net-minder.
In the defensive zone the looked good, they gave up a lot of shots from the point, and from the sides, but that's OK. Have to think that Santa will make those saves.
The penalty kill looked awesome. I don't think they gave up a grade A chance to the number 3 team in the USA all night on 7 penalty kills. Enough said.
What are we putting the over/under on goals this year from super Mario? 25?

At the end of the day, I thought they looked like a top 20 team who got beat by a top 5 team. The one thing UNO didn't do is give up mistakes (aside from some late penalties) and UVM obviously did, and they got scored on. I think it takes only slight adjustments and UVM will steal a win from NoDak next weekend.

Go Cats.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Couple quick thoughts about last night's game:

1. With the exception of about 10 seconds I thought the two teams played very evenly.
2. Both Pattyn and Hamilton had bad games.
3. Loved seeing Kearley playing instead of Abramson. Looks like the makings of another solid D wearing #2. Needs to stop waving his stick at the puck and just skate through people.
4. UNO back checks very well. The UVM forwards never had any space in the offensive end.
5. Love seeing Puskarich on the point during the power play.
6. Santaguida was visibly upset with himself after the second goal. Nice to see him put it behind him and stone them the rest of the game. He was very solid on straight in shots. Needs to work on side-to-side movement and to not lunge for the puck.
7. Alexx Privitera should not be on the ice for the last minute of any game :)

Agree with the comments above about dump and chase and the selfish, undisciplined penalties.
All in all I thought (with the exception of about 10 seconds) it was a game UVM could have won. Need to remember that this is a very young team and am looking forward to a fun season. Hopefully we get to play UNO again in the Final Four!

!

Have to disagree Kearley got beat several times last night with guys just blowing by him with speed and him not even touching them.

Funny thing I had just said I thought O'neil should get sometime with some skilled players and he goes and takes a terrible pen with about 5 min
left killing all the momentum Vermont had. Might not see him Friday if the past is any indicator.

A word to #5 if you let the puck get by you at the point on the PP and a guy is about to go by you full speed "TAKE HIM DOWN!!!!!", 4 on 4 would have been
better than killing all the momentum Vermont had going at that point by giving up a shorty.

Santa has been beat 3 times at home this year by the same fake left go backhand right on the beakaways, maybe need to mix it up with a poke check once in a while.

I am very disappointed in the coaching staff after the weekend. By this level, it should basically be a play if you are playing well system and not an automatic free pass for some players with big reputations that aren't matched by reality, or coaches' pets.
Hamilton a top 2? Hardly.
Privittera a good defender? Hardly.
Kearley better then Abramson? He can't carry his jock strap.
Lee a top 4 as a natural freshman? That is a joke right.
I hope that Abramson was sick or injured. I know that sounds bad but it at least explains things.
If that is how the d will shape up for the rest of the year, things will not be good.
Is there a forward who knows how to win a draw? If there is and he is not a centre, who cares. Let him take the draw. We are embarrassing on the draw.
....and whatever became of Mike Stenerson?

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

UNO is a good team, but I still expected UVM to take a game this weekend despite Hendrickson's kiss of death.

Oddly I really thought the D and goaltending would be solid and it would be the offense that was going to be this teams Achille's heel... instead it seems to be the D that is costing the team games.

While I do still think we can put 6 good d-man on the ice, I don't believe the current 6 are the top 6. Moreover, it's painfully clear that the pairings aren't working. Time to shuffle up the D...

With North Dakota coming in the D needs to be much much better.

That said, as disappointed as I am with the two home losses it could be worse... we could be NU...

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

I agree that I hope it was illness or something of that sort that kept Abramson limited to ice time this weekend.

The refs got the penalty calls right and it was some of the most physical hockey I've seen out of UVM in a long time. Neither team seemed to have anything left by the end of the 2nd game.

I agree Hamilton was a liability. It's shame because he's got skill. His timing and/or judgement seems to be off.

Faceoffs are a major concern. The numbers for Friday night were close but I don't remember UVM controlling the puck off the faceoff more than once or twice but UNO seemed to control it regularly. Numbers were worse for Sat night and it was obvious when watching the game. Seemed like there were situations where UVM started assuming UNO was going to win the faceoff and run the plays on that assumption.

Love the level of effort / compete. Top line needs to do a better job putting away chances. Bradley was a beast chasing down the puck, great job playing center.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Pretty quiet on here...

I must say I'm at a loss of what to expect this weekend. I expect the Cats to come out and play well. They will be at Home and I have to imagine Sneddon has had a talk and some extra ice time for the D-men this week.

Considering both games last weekend were winnable games the guys should know they play with the best if they play hard and smart for the full game. Which, considering #1 is coming in that's exactly what needs to happen.

But there is the other question.... is NoDak that good? Early polls are never a good indication and their early record really doesn't tell us much either. That said it's still North Dakota and they are always going to be near the top of the heap. On the other hand they have a new head coach and their #1 and #2 goalies are out with injury with the 3rd string walk on tending the net this weekend.

The offense will need to put up some numbers this weekend AND Santa is going to need to be good along with the D because goal scoring doesn't seem to be a problem for the Sue. That said they did manage a single goal against Maine?? Let's hope that teams shows up Friday

You make good points about this series. UND has 11 freshman so they are young and inexperienced. This road trip will be a great barometer to see where they are at as a team. Going to the East Coast, to play a solid catamount team coming off being swept, playing in front of a walk-on 3rd string goalie with already 3 or 4 guys that will be out due to injury.

The one thing this team has shown is that they can score goals though. Our freshman are contributing right away. The combination of 1st rounders soph. Nick Schmaltz and Fr. Brock Boeser on a line worked great last weekend. Boeser notched the 1st hat trick by a UND freshman since TJ Oshie did it in '05. Add Cagguila, who is our best finisher from last year's team and that is the line that Vermont needs to worry about.

And a quick note on Maine, we did outshoot them 45-20 and carry the play much of the game FWIW. However, their goalie seemed to have a brick wall behind him and didn't let anything by.

Can't wait for a great series!

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

Announcement just made ... Corran leaving early as AD ... will be out by the end of the year.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

I know some of you still believe in santa claus. I wish he would bring back hoffman. The cats version of santa is giving too many gifts to the other team.

Seriously. How many games can you win giving up a soft goal every game? Cats have a nice team but lacks goaltending and THAT will be the achilles heal of this season

Like coughlin a lot. Need Shaw to be the monstet he can be also

I can't wait for jcarter to argue with you. Reality is probably another 2 years of Santa. Though it is not like his D in front of him is world beating either that is probably going to take some time. I'm sure he not on scholarship but I want to know how bad Feely must be to never play in a game how can you be 6-7 and literally never get in a meaningful game? You would think at least he has some ability and with that size to at least have good net coverage skills. What is even the advantage of him being around gotta wonder if he is next year since don't they have that supposedly good goalie recruit in jrs again this year?
I hope they'll be competitive this weekend but you do wonder what would happen if they get smoked on Friday.
I still stand by what Ive said about this team from the start but still feel it is too early to know whether the season goes one way or another playing teams so tough right now.

Also on Corran retiring I think that isn't a bad thing fresh blood can be good. Though he never did get that arena built did he? And he is not leaving early his contract expires in June 2016, which is his leave date.

I'm not going to argue... much. I think I've made a case as to why Santa is a legit goaltender. At this point if someone else doesn't agree there isn't anything left to be said. If he leads this team to the promise land I'll never let you guys forget it. I will agree he let in a really soft goal Sat. That' can't happen and that's on him. Friday, at least 3 of those 4 were not even close to his fault. One was a tad iffy. But please if you are going to be down on him, do it because of his play not this unbelievably ******** argument that it's because he isn't big enough...like goalies don't actually move and you just want a 500lbs beast that literally fills the net. Some of the best goalies ever were not the biggest.

The advantage is that if Santa and/or Munson get injured we have some that can stop the puck. The goal tender coming in this weekend for NoDak is their 3rd string walk on... because their #1 and #2 are injured.

I hope so as well. There's a lot of fire power on No Dak... the cats win this game if they can keep the offense in check. If not it will get ugly. This is a crucial weekend for Santa and the defense.

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

NoDak has some firepower and very good defense but you need goaltending as well on the road. Hrynkiw is a neat story but the fact remains he is a third string afterthought walk-on that I don't have a whole heck of a lot of faith in yet. We will need to score often and the D will have to play very well in front of Hrynkiw to have any chance of stealing a game this weekend. I'm just hoping for a split... well, that and our **** team to get healthy for once. Fugging injuries...

Re: UVM 2015-2016 The New Season

So Hendrickson flipped this weekend and picked UVM to be swept by the Sue... things are looking up already.

Mostly was saying if next year is UVM going to carry 4 goalies if that Lekkas(?) kid arrives next year. I know he is here for emergencies but gosh you'd hope he could have worked hard and learned to use his size in addition to skill just kind of feel having that size and not trying to work on your skill to get in games is sort of a waste - and no doesn't mean i think goalies have to be tall but certainly and advantage that could be used in addition to skill.
