Utica University 2024-25 - Retooled and Reloaded

Pre-season polls are out, we're 4th in both. We're bringing back quite possibly the best roster since the team that was the #1 seed in the national tournament (before COVID ruined it), and we welcome two new conference opponents in Brockport and Geneseo

I don't know about everyone else, but I'd say the vibes are pretty high right now, but another early season test with Adrian will set the tone for the season

Playing a couple vs. Adrian on the road so early is a tough row to hoe, but the two exhibitions before that might help prepare them a bit.

At least Utica isn't ducking anyone.

I'm hoping for a sweep, but I'll be OK with a split.

In some ways, I'm more interested in seeing how Adrian performs with their coaching change.

But yeah, Utica put together a nice nonconference schedule this year with the limited number of games they had to play with. And with Geneseo now in the league, it will be tougher competition overall for the Pioneers.

As expected tonight, not much of a game. Utica the significantly better team. Some rust but Utica looks like a deep squad.

Great day for Utica Hockey. Women defeats Elmira to win our tournament in OT and the Men take the first game of the pair this weekend.

That was Frozen Four level of quality, and a great win on top of it

Need to take the other tomorrow, it sets the tone for the rest of the season

Utica was the better team tonight, albeit by a fairly narrow margin.

I can live with a split- if that happens- but if this team stays healthy, the sky is the limit.

Why didn't Roberts start today? Makes no sense at all. The Adrian games (and the Genny games) are easily the most important games of the RS. Why not play your elite goalie?

Still, if AC is as good as it looks to me, a split won't haunt Utica too badly, in a PW context.

BUT, I do think that UU wins today if Ethan is in net.

Heenan makes very curious decisions at times. I've followed this program closely for its entire history, and he out-thinks himself on a regular basis. His ego tends to get in the way at times.

Oh my God! We actually agree on something!

Ethan is coming off surgery in the offseason so I understand being cautious, but if he was healthy enough to play the 2nd half, I don't know why you don't play him all game

But a split or better is ultimately the goal coming into this series every year, and a split is something to work off of

Is there a quick explanation on the key differences between PWR and NPI?

I'm pretty sure NPI allows each different committee for each sport (men's and women's hockey do not need to be the same, each different committee) to weigh criteria differently. There is a deadline that they have before the season that they have to "set the dials" so to speak about how much each criteria is going to be weighted and then it is in place and used throughout the entire season.

More to what you're asking, the main difference is that the NPI simplifies the process and expands on what a quality win means for teams. In the pairwise for instance, things could "count twice" when you get a win and H2H. Also, instead of a hard cut-off for getting a boost by beating a top 10 team per se and then no boost for beating the 11th team, this system allows for you to still get more credit for beating the 11th team, just not quite as much as the 10th team.
