Utica University 2022-23: Is This The Year?

I'm not picking a fight here; I'm simply curious... Do you think it's a good idea fro UU to join the AHA?

The AHA has it's pros and cons, I wouldn't say I'm opposed to it personally, but if it's AHA or bust to go D1, then it has to be AHA, if there's options of elsewhere they could end up, I know they'll explore every avenue to get the best result for the program

And I don't believe the AHA has any interesting in expanding for a while (unless Navy comes along, but that rumor is even more nebulous than Utica going D1...). And I'm guessing this is the reason for the delay in Utica announcing any upgrade.

What's wrong with being an independent for a year or two ? Get a couple of years of recruiting in place. Would they have a tough time scheduling games ?

This and/or the group of independents coming together to make their own conference and get an auto-bid in 2 seasons would be a great outcome in my opinion

I still don't see the upside of joining the AHA and twisting in the wind.

That can't help attendance, revenue, winning %, National exposure, the chances of garnering an NCAA berth... ANYTHING, really.

Becoming a Canisius, a Mercyhurst, (even an RIT!) sounds pointless to me.

Hate to double-post (not really) but Utica should have won that game 4-0, without any ENG's. Credit to Woods for keeping his team in it whatsoever.

I'm not exactly sold on UU being a NC team, but Landsberger is looking more like a guy who could help them to get there.

Lots of work ahead, in any case.

Quite the opposite. Current pres is a big supporter and wants to get it wrapped up before she leaves.

Well, that's politics, not reason. Having left one's last institution falling on its sword isn't wrapping things up in any meaningful way. And it shouldn't look good on a resume.

You say this a lot, and I know what you mean, but by that reasoning no poll means anything in any sport. In your opinion, is that true? Genuinely curious with no malice

Well, polls are completely meaningless, and that's a fact.

The PW is what matters, period.

No malice on my end either, but why even reference a meaningless "metric". Drives me nuts.

As I said, I know what you mean. But then again, that means every poll is meaningless. AP poll in football means nothing until the playoff rankings come out. College hoops poll means nothing until March Madness. You get my drift. If that’s your perspective, it makes perfect sense. But I do admit that I like having “national rankings” in these sports during the regular season.

We all know poll's are meaningless, but, they're fun to look at, isn't that why we look at them ? Also they're for bragging rights, it's fun to be able to say "We're # 1. It never happens to most teams ever, in any sport !

This.

They are totally meaningless. But they are fun. And unlike Fishman, the rest of us like to have fun. So we talk about them.

I prefer something that's actually meaningful.

Tik Tok could rank the teams, and it wouldn't amount to anything more than the coaches' poll.

If it means nothing, why bother?

I follow D3 football and the polls have been pretty accurate when you compare final results of the NCAA tournament to the rankings before the tournament. I haven't really analyzed the historical Hockey rankings. While it is true that the actual Championship is the only thing that matters, I do think that the polls(depending on skill of voters) give an interesting human judgment estimate of the team strengths during the year. The PW can be imperfect as well in predicting outcomes . Right now Hobart is ranked #1 which helps coach Taylor with his recruiting efforts as well as visability with donors. At the end of the day the ranking means nothing unless Hobart gets into the tournament( Norwich loss and a few OT wins show they are vulnerable) and beat the likes of Utica and Adrian that are getting first place votes well.

It differs a lot. His point is that they only use PW to select the tournament field. So in the only rankings that matter, Endicott is the #1 team in the nation and Hobart is 3rd.

The human judgement element could be more accurate, but it doesn't matter because the rankings aren't used for anything other than an ego pump. The voters normally trend towards historically strong teams. Hence why Geneseo, St Norbert, Augsburg are ranked so high even though they are out of the top 20 in the PW. And the opposite for teams like Plymouth St, Wesleyan, Skidmore.

OK, get it. Interesting how the methodology varies by sport in the NCAA.

Anyone who thinks St Norbert is one of the 10 best teams in the country hasn't watched them play this year. I'm not saying that they are terrible, but no way are they the 9th best team.
