Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

God knows I hate to agree with you, Champs, but you are exactly right... The selection committee doesn't seem to give the USCHO poll the time of day, and why should it..?

They don't give it the "Time of Day" because it has zero to do with the criteria, this isn't the BCS.

For example, how many times do you see this absurd scenario unfold: the coaches vote Team A over Team B during one week, then Team A beats Team B the following week, and Team B drops like a stone as a result..? (Hmmm... Pretty-much every week!)

Again we are talking about Final Score watchers. And 2, sometimes they drop "like a stone" because (much like Norwich currently) they haven't played anyone yet or the pollsters have a "this will show us just how good they are".

(HELLO, morons! If you judged one team better than the other in the first place, IYO, then why would you then punish the weaker team for losing to the stronger?)

Because most of the time this was the weaker teams chance to show thier worth. ...

The polls are a *little* fun to follow, but amount to nothing... Can't wait for the first KRACH to be published, unless it doesn't have UC where I think they should be then I will find something else

FYP for ya.....

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

For the millionth time....you should NEVER worry about a poll....NCAA bids have ZERO to do with polls....

Who mentioned anything about the NCAA's, besides you, I just think it's fun to watch the polls every week. Mercy.

FYP for ya.....

I suppose I should be nice here, since you only came to pick a *little* fight, for a change...

Still, I have to ask what D-3 metric outside the KRACH either holds enough water in a logical sense -or is transparent enough- to be credible to you? (Seems to me that I've been waiting on that response from you for a couple of years now; I'm not holding my breath this time, either.)

Happy Thanksgiving, anyway, Champs. You're not all bad, by any means, and I hope you'll have an answer for us once your mom rolls you off her couch on Saturday.

Pioneers have been playing with fire and tonight they get burned. Letting teams hang around by not finishing on their many chances is killing this team. Should have won by 3 goals regardless of not scoring on the late 5-on-3 and the waved off goal on a high stick. Losing to 1-6-1 teams do not embellish the resumé...

It hurts you less to lose to Morrisville than it did to lose to Genny. Morriisville will not be among the ranked teams - it is a loss. Genesseo probably will be regionally ranked. The loss to them hits you twice. Once on your Win%, once on your RNK%. Now playing a team with a 1-6-1 record win or lose does not help the OWP metric (the games you play against somebody are not included in the calculation of the OWP). Losing a game you should have won hurts the rest of the ECAC West in the OWP category.

Ok, so you're saying this is just a loss in the grand scheme of NCAA rankings and Hobart's loss to Genny is worse. That's good as losses go, I guess. This loss is eerily similar to the 5-0 Cortland loss last year--although that was not on home ice. Following that stunning defeat, UC went on a 5 game W streak scoring 26 goals--it'd be nice if history were to repeat itself...

Utica's next 5 games are a little more impressive than the 5 that followed the Cortland loss, I will go on record and offer significant kudos to Utica if they win December 14...

Utica hasn't lost to Geneseo; they haven't even played them. (If I missed something in your reference, I apologize.)

The loss to Morrisville is a bad loss in terms of W% (obviously; every loss hurts you there) and, as you imply, it's going to impact UC's/The W's SOS simply by dint of having been played, whether or not it was won or lost. (Unless, of course, Morrisville starts winning more games.)

Excuse me, I meant Hobart - I was thinking of another team at the time, but the principle is the same. Lose a bad team, you lose. Lose to a ranked team and it costs you double.

UC took the entire 1st period off, turned it on after suddenly falling behind in the 2nd, then once more coasted along until they trailed again in the 3rd... The effort there was just not consistent. (Yes, I realize that playing an inferior team that drops-back into a trap at every opportunity is frustrating, but that's the reality of the situation for UC. They'd better find a way get motivated to defeat that strategy, because they're going to see it all season long.)

Nicky wasn't sharp, either, and I'm wondering if rotating Zelzer in for every other game might be a good idea, if for no other reason than to give Marcus the ice-time he's earned, while (possibly) sending a wake-up to Nick that he's supposed to take every game seriously.

All that aside, I gave all three stars for that game to the Morrisville goalie, Azzano. He made 38 saves -many of them brilliant- while kicking the net off its moorings six times in heavy-traffic, and writhing dramatically on the ice in apparent agony whenever a Utica guy so much as breathed in his direction... He even managed to get an interference call after his own D-man crosschecked a UC guy on top of him! (I thought he might die right there on The Aud ice after that one, but apparently he's a quick healer, and the ensuing PP resulted in the GWG for his team.)

Just for the record, I'm not knocking his antics; he played those ghastly D-3 refs like he owned them, and thereby engineered a win for his over-matched team... He ought to consider giving clinics.

:p

Schedule a bad team, and it can't help you much no matter how you slice it, though, don't you agree?

I'd rather UC had lost to Genny and had at least garnered the SOS points in that case, providing that they'd go on to amass a good W% down the road while playing similarly tough competition...

Seems to me that playing Morrisville is not likely to be very worthwhile, even in the best-case scenario. (At least you'd have a shot in besting Genny in the RNK% criteria, eg., even if you lost to them.)

I don't know if Utica just took Morrisville lightly or what, but I watched most of that game and it just looked like Utica didn't even show up. Morrisville has the tendency to play surprisingly well against good teams...and very badly against everyone else. They gave Oswego fits over the last few years. Frustrating as heck, for sure.

I do believe that is the first thing Emory said that I agree with.
