Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Neumann went 4-7-1 in the RS vs. UC, EC, HC and MC... That's all anyone with the slightest clue as to how statistics work needs to see in order to determine that NC's mythical "championship" meant next to nothing.

And, yes, Ozz: if every team in the country played in a round-robin format against every other team, then no PS tournaments of any sort would be required to sort them out 99% of the time.

It really isn't so hard to grasp, guys.... More data is better than less data, when it comes to making comparisons.

Strictly for non-trolls: any Utica/M'ville fans see the game tonight?

I shelled-out the $7 for the feed tonight from govaliants.com. The stream was somewhat < SD-quality, but I've seen worse, and I'd probably buy it again... (The puck was visible from time to time, at least, and the announcers -especially the PBP guy- were as professional as I've ever heard on a D-3 production.)

Two points on the road in the W is always a good thing, but Utica just isn't firing on all cylinders yet; they should have won that thing going-away.

Yes, UC faced a very good goalie, hit three posts, spent the entire 3rd in M'ville's zone, etc., but there's definitely a great deal of room for improvement in both ends of the ice... This team hasn't hit its stride yet; there are too many guys trying to do it all by themselves in the O-zone and some careless D at times, and the PP is completely abyssal for a team with this much talent.

It's nothing that can't be fixed, but even at 4-1, this team has under-achieved so far, IMO. If they can put it together sooner rather than later, watch out.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

The conference tournaments should be viewed as an extension of the NCAA tournament. Regular season helps set the seeding for the tournament, nothing more nothing less. A regular season title means nothing if you don't win your conference tournament. I am not sure of anyone who would brag about being regular season champs unless they were also the conference tournament champ.

So the RS just exists in order to seed the conference tournament..? Please explain the logic in that remark, in terms of sample-size.

(And, while you're at it, explain how valuable NC's tournament "championship" was to them... I'm all ears on that one.)

Team A:

W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-L-W-W-W-W-W-W-L-L-L-L-L-L-L-L-L-L 14-11

Team B:
L-L-L-L-L-L-L-W-L-L-L-L-L-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W 13-12

Your contender for PS is Team A???

Assuming an exactly congruent in-conference SOS among the two teams, then yes, of course...

And intra-conference schedules are generally perfectly congruent, aside (sometimes) from the siting of same.

I donated to watch as well. I have concerns about the PP which at 3 for 32 (9.4%) is horrendous. I didn't think it could get worse from last year (16.9%) but it has. Luckily the PK is as good as the PP is bad thus allowing UC to be 4-1 vice 3-2 or 2-3 at this point. This team has a boatload of talent and I agree they're underachieving offensively. Heenan mixed up the top lines tonight with not much better results although to be fair they did ring the pipes on at least two occasions that I saw. Freshmen are getting lots of ice time so the chemistry may not be there yet. They're winning games at 80% and even the Hobart loss was there for the taking so I'm really not complaining but I'd love to see this team firing on all cylinders. A win in Aston tonight would be a nice bookend a tough ECAC-W road weekend.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Pioneers looked much better tonight and even go 2 for 2 on the PP.
Two frosh make their debuts, Jide Idowu and Luc Boby, who took 5 shots apiece with Boby netting the game winner.
Two big road wins this weekend, UC now 4-1 atop the W.
Off to Hobart next weekend for 2 as UC looks to avenge only blemish. Statesmen struggled at home this weekend.

Did you watch the stream from Neumann tonight?

Tonight's made last night's feed look like 1080p HD. It was as grainy as a silent movie from the 30's, and similarly provided no sound at all, aside from a relentless background hiss. They used a single camera that resulted in pixilation whenever it was moved, and the feed was in black and white.. (!) It was free, though, and the camera-person did a very admirable job of staying on the puck and showing the scoreboard when possible, so the game-clock could be viewed. (Thanks, Neumann.)

Tonight, UC looked like the team I'd expected them to be, aside from a few minutes they took-off in the 3rd. They didn't just *pose* a bunch of scoring threats; they finished-off a robust six of them. As you said, the PP is suddenly looking potent, but NC didn't pressure the puck on their PK as M'ville, EC and HC did; UC had the time and space to tee it up tonight.

Utica is an even better team than they were last season, and that fact isn't lost on the W coaches; the adjustments (eg. trapping at every opportunity and pressuring the points on the PK) are being made. Those guys aren't going to attempt to run-and-gun with UC anymore -aside from maybe Hobart- and Heenan is going to have to game-plan like crazy this year, 'cause some teams are often going to play in desperation-mode against him from the opening horn.

Should be fun to watch.

Must be spending all their time worrying about Utica ...

ECAC Men's West - Recent Scores

Elmira 2 at Brockport 5 NC
Geneseo 4 at Hobart 3 NC OT

Saturday, November 16:
Brockport 1 at Hobart 1 NC OT

No less impressive given recent history, yes.

FYI: I'm not sure if Hobart does a video stream but Ray and I will be doing the games at the Cooler next weekend. We don't have a radio station for Friday so there will be a webstream link (with me on pbp) and then Ray will resume his usual duties on Saturday on WPNR with me on color.

Hope everyone tunes in!

Brockport's Aaron Green is a great goalie on a mediocre team...

Get back to us after "your" team has faced him; I'll bet you won't be trolling/crowing so much after that, at your every rare opportunity to chime-in needlessly.

(At least I hope so; I'm wearing-out my ignore-button.)

You mean the one who has split time evenly with Jared Lockhurst so far this season? Yeah, get back to us when he can win the starting job outright.

Green's results:
@Utica, 5-2 loss, 42 shots, 2GA in 60 min
@Potsdam, 6-3 win, 27 shots, 3GA in 60min
Elmira, 5-2 win, 24 shots, 1GA in 47 min.

Stat line: 2-1-0, 6GA, 2.15GAA, .935sv%

Jared Lockhurst:
@Nazareth, 6-4 loss, 29 shots, 5GA in 59min
@Plattsburgh, 6-0 loss, 44 shots, 6GA in 60 min
Elmira, no result, 4 shots, 1 GA in 12 min
@Hobart, 1-1 tie, 45 shots, 1GA in 65 min

Stat line: 0-2-1, 14GA, 4.29GAA, .885sv%

So yes, the stats would show Green to be the #1 goaltender on the team, but I would argue that Lockhurst has played better competition (Green has faced one top team, Lockhurst has played 2), and that would indicate to me that their coach is not likely to hand Green the full-time starting job anytime soon...

5-2 loss against UC (two goals in sixty minutes):D

What? I was commenting on how the SUNYAC out of conference record has improved so far this year compared to years past. There was no mention of any specific team, so you accuse me of trolling your thread?
I did not know you owned this thread. What arrogance.

The regular season is played with the goal of winning the playoffs, you have the best regular season you have in theory the best shot of winning the tournament (the best seed/home ice). If the ECAC West had the auto bid to the ncaa's this would never come up as an issue, but since this is the beast that is the west you want it to favor your team when they falter in the tournament.

Don't get me wrong winning the regular season is great and all but when it comes down to it every player wants to win a tournament, the league tournament and ultimately the NCAA tournament.

This may not have had "value" to NC in terms of prolonging their season, but I can guarantee you that those kids would have it no other way then to finish their season in the W column than the loss column. Because of the league they play in it was out of their hands after that. Can you sit there and tell me that they would have preferred to have lost the tournament because their regular season was maybe a few games worse than the season UC had.

I played in this league a number of years back now, but I remember winning the league championship, I don't remember winning the RS (which we also did).

Well, just by showing up here with a hostile attitude toward the thread's titular team constitutes "trolling" does it not..? Don't you have enough fascinating insights to post on the OSU thread, FCS?

But, if I misunderstood the intent your cryptic comment, I apologize, so I'll ask you directly: what on Earth did you intend to communicate via that remark?

Not at all sure why you'd waste precious minutes of your life to research/post the above, when no one on here ever even mentioned Lockhurst in the first place... (But, then again, I don't understand how/why any of you types have/take the time to come here -hidden behind a screen-name- in order to pick some cowardly and pointless "fight".)

I will say this: Green had a .933 save % in the UC and Hobart games, while facing 45 SOG per game. That's good goal-tending against two dangerous offenses, by any reasonable measure. His D didn't help him at all v. Utica; I can tell you that... UC could have easily put-up 10 scores in that game, if he hadn't been so sharp.

I'm interested to see how he'll fare against Oswego. I'm sure that you'll be silent here if he stone-walls them, and come to yap again if he doesn't, but you won't see me mocking OSU fans on their thread in either case.

Take the hint, already.
