Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

1) Minnesota
2) Wisconsin
3) Cornell
4) North Dakota

. . .

5) Boston University
6) Boston College
7) Quinnipiac
8) Bob Morris
9) Ohio State
10) Harvard

At this point the separation between #4 and #5 is astonishing and the separation between #5 and #12 is nonexistent. I seriously considered just lumping 5-10 into one big tie and giving them each 7.5 points. My apologies to Mercyhurst and Clarkson for making them the ones omitted from my response, but who knows, maybe next week it will be their turn to do well on the Wheel of Random Results.

If BC can match the aggression they showed on Friday with the defensive discipline they showed on Sunday they should be back in the top four. Looking forward very much to the Cornell series.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Not much change in the top four. Top four order the same, but Wisco a more clear second ahead of Cornell and UND closing the gap to Cornell.

Once you get past the top four it gets more interesting, Clarkson and Harvard dropping, BU and Quinnipiac coming into the picture at the cost of OHIO and UMD falling out of the top 10. Was almost inclined to put the Terriers ahead of BC, but BC's victories this weekend were over stronger opponents, giving them to number 5 spot nod.

1 - Minnesota (1)
2 - Wisconsin (2)
3 - Cornell (3)
4 - North Dakota (4)
5 - BC (7)
6 - BU (NR)
7 - Clarkson (5)
8 - Harvard (6)
9 - Quinnipiac (NR)
10 - MC (10).....They somehow manage to stay here, but they are closer to being out than being into the top 10.

OHIO and SLU the main contenders on the outside looking in.

Really, really interesting stuff this week.

1) Chicago Blackhawks
2) Wisconsin
3) Cornell
4) North Dakota

BU is baffling me; I still don't think they're any good. But the record is impressive so I had to bump them up.

I also feel like I'm overrating BC, and that most of you guys are too. They have some serious issues to work out in goal and the depth at D is really concerning. I'll probably feel a lot better about things once we look like world beaters when we get to play UConn. Right now we're playing a lot of those "decent-but-not-great" teams that are much closer to the top of the heap because of the Olympic year and make things scarier than they really should.

As for the feeling of overrating them, I thought about ranking them lower until I realized I can't really come up with a good enough reason to rank anyone below them any higher. So that's what I came up with.

As for the feeling of overrating them, I thought about ranking them lower until I realized I can't really come up with a good enough reason to rank anyone below them any higher. So that's what I came up with.

This is the thing. I look for four things when I'm doing this: my overall feelings about a team's roster (which will become less important as the season goes along and there are more results to use); gaudy aggregate record; victories over other teams in the conversation for the top ten; a lack of losses or ties to much weaker teams.

The top four, which everyone seems to agree on with only small variations in order, do well on all four measures. Minnesota had a hiccup game but found a way to win it. Wisconsin has a sweep of Ohio State and their only blemishes are against the only team I have above them. Cornell thumped Calrkson pretty good and hasn't lost. North Dakota is clearly #4 with a split with Ohio State and a series against UMD that's looking less and less valuable as it appears that just about anybody can take three points from the Bulldogs.

After that, though, you're hard pressed to find teams that manage a positive in more than one of those last three categories. I put BU at #5 since they have a win over Robert Morris and the significant blemish is just a tie. BC has a gaudy record but hasn't really beaten anyone that's clamoring to be considered really good and has either one or two perplexing losses, depending upon how you feel about Syracuse. Harvard has only four games in, with one good win and a bewildering loss. Clarkson has gone 0-2-1 against other teams I have in consideration (which should tell you something about how many perplexing losses I think BC has had) and a tie against Brown. Other than two games against BU, Robert Morris has been beating up on nobodies and managed to lose one of them. (Rensselaer has the most incomprehensible slate of results to date and I'm running out of synonyms for "hard to understand".) Mercyhurst's points off of Clarkson are looking less and less valuable.

As I said, I think you could take teams 5-12 (or perhaps 5-15), put the names in a jar and draw at random. You'd have as good a ranking as anything anyone can try to assemble rationally.

Pretty much all of this.

Great post.

I took this over to the BC thread, but in short, looking at the stats, it seems like D is actually pretty solid compared to last year (and certainly the more attention I pay to Lexi Bender the more impressed I am). The problems are almost entirely in goal, where both goalies are some way below last year's figures.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

This looks awfully familiar! :D
I was considering actually calling that out myself. ;)

My thought when I first saw it was that I didn't see anything broken with it, so there was no sense "fixing" it. Plus I'm on vacation (see my comments in the USWNT thread) so I decided to be lazy.
