1 St. Lawrence 10-NR NR

My, aren't we boring this week. Just one change in the rankings, at the #10 spot.

Just curious. Is your point calculations based on 10,9,8 down to 1 for tenth place?. That would add up to 127 for Minny with 10 first place and 3 second place voters.

BTW, what does ARV stand for ?.

So we need something to spice things up, like a loss by Minnesota to UMD or BC to BU create some movement. When does BC play BU again ? :D

I think the key is that at this point of the season, no matter how one orders the teams, a lot of estimation is required. I'm always impressed when an Ivy can come out in its first week and dominate a team that is at least decent, if not great, because the Ivy is a few weeks behind in terms of the schedule. You may be right; Dave may be right. Either way, it is just an estimate.

Gotta love those kind of games where there are no winners and no losers...unless at the end of this one Grant has some kind of trick up his sleeve. ;)

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Top spot is easy, then it gets real tricky. Most teams with a blemish or two this week.

Right now 2nd place nod goes to Wisco, clearly they have done the best so far vs Minny so that pushes them over UND, Clarkson and BC. Hard to figure out both Ohio and MC, but both enter my top ten on the account of their good games against Clarky and Wioux at the cost of NEU and BU.

1 - Minnesota (1)
2 - Wisconsin (5)
3 - Clarkson (2)
4 - North Dakota (4)
5 - BC (3)
6 - Cornell (6)
7 - Harvard (8)
8 - UMD (7)
9 - OHIO (NR)
10 - MC (NR)

A little surprised you dropped Clarkson just one place to No. 3 despite their loss and a tie against your previously unranked Mercyhurst.

OnMAA likely had Clarkson at a "high" No. 2, because Clarkson was his top team two weeks ago.

Obviously I dropped them farther than OnMAA did, but the 2-6 spots are really a toss up at this point and I felt like i was selecting mostly randomly. They all have flaws as a #2 or #3.

Wisconsin: In terms of results to date, their only claim to being ranked is a pair of losses. Sure, they played Minnesota really tough but their wins are all against teams that are expected to be pretty weak. Losses are an odd way to claim greatness.

Clarkson: Sort of similar to Wisconsin. Their main claim is that people looked at their roster and thought they looked really good. They also lack any signature wins.

Boston College: Another case where the ranking depends upon opinions of the roster rather than actual results. Given how weak St. Lawrence looks at this point, BC lost the only game they've played against an opponent that might be good. Then they needed a late short-handed goal to beat Yale. I put them at #2 based almost entirely upon their roster and the two most recent periods they played in which they look like they're waking up.

North Dakota: This is an interesting case. They've actually beaten a team that gets consideration for the top ten. However, we can also try to compare them to Minnesota since that team is one the Gophers just beat handily in Duluth, while UND had to scrape to come up with a win and a tie at home. So it's perfectly possible to look at this as there being a clear gap between UND and the top spot into which other teams can fit.

Cornell: How you feel about Cornell depends a lot on how you feel about Northeatern. If you think they're good then Cornell's two victories could easily propel them to #2. If you think Northeastern is suspect, then you have nothing to go by other than whether you like the roster.

I couldn't argue with any arrangement of these teams between #2 and #6 and considered just lumping them together as one big tie. I really think there are three pretty clear tiers here, with little if anything to separate those within each tier:

1: Minnesota
2: BC; Clarkson; Cornell; North Dakota; Wisconsin
3: Mercyhurst; Minnesota-Duluth; Ohio State; Providence; Quinnipiac

Which, unfortunately, adds up to 11 teams rather than 10. I think comparative results show that BU is clearly somewhere below Providence and I don't really get the Harvard love at this point; maybe the freshmen will step up and be ready to go but I need to see more evidence of it before I could fit them into one of those tiers.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

I'm not sure how to rank the teams out east, because I rarely get to see them play
the WCHA teams I know well
6 thru 10 are a coin toss

1 - Minnesota
2 - Wisconsin
3 - North Dakota tie
3 - Cornell tie
5 - Clarkson
6 - Harvard
7 - BC
8 - OSU
9 - Mercyhurst
10 - UMD
11 - Quinnipiac

if ties are not acceptable, the order I list 'em is the order I think they should be
