USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

as MN & UND were the only teams to dispose of quality opponents, they are my #1 & #2
and I have my doubts that any other team could have beaten UW even once this weekend
you see, in my world, playing well and losing to a tough opponent is better than beating a cupcake in the long run

1) UM
2) UND
3) UW
4) Clarkson
5) BC
6) UMD
7) OSU
8) BU
9) Harvard
10) Cornell

and you have to actually play someone before you get a high ranking

I decided on my vote and then checked Rutter. I discovered that I am pretty much in accord with Rutter again, differing only on 9 and 10. I can't bring myself to move UMD up from where I had them ranked last week (10) to 9 based on a loss and a tie. I had BU at 7 last week. They had a win and a tie, I left them above Duluth.

Note to TTT: Rutter posts here, he is clearly a "poster". Maybe you should include his ratings as a vote in the poll.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Moving Minny ahead of Clarkson, due to their wins against strength, vs Clarky's against an unranked team. Wisco and UMD drop a bit. Still having trouble finding a worthy candidate for 10th place. None of the candidates really all that convincing. I went with NorthEastern, as it was the only team in the next group to have two wins this weekend. Most others split.

1 - Minnesota (2)
2 - Clarkson (1)
3 - BC (4)
4 - North Dakota (5)
5 - Wisconsin (3)
6 - Cornell (7)
7 - UMD (6)
8 - Harvard (8)
9 - BU (9)...This is the line, blurry picture 10-14.
10 - NEU (NR)

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

If he wants me to I can, I only wonder how much stock he takes in his formula this early in the year with so much emphasis on last year's results.

how is that different than anybody else? that's what just about everyone does

and note the pollsters agree with me and moved UW & UMD up in the polls, you have to look beyond the score

As a mathematical formula, it cannot take into account things like graduated players and players lost to the Olympics and incoming freshmen.

Yes, to some extent, those of us putting together rankings use results from last year as a starting point, but adjust based on those differences above.

I like Rutter's rankings. I have no problem with his rankings. My point is, mathematical approximations of how to rank teams are limited by the numbers that can be plugged into the formula -- in this case, most of his data points so far are coming from last year's games, games which used rosters that are substantially different to this year's.

Not all pollsters in this thread. I moved both down. In my version, Wisco (2 losses) was passed by UND (Win and Tie) and BC (Two wins). UMD (Loss and tie) was passed by Cornell (11-0 Win).

You have to look beyond the score

I agree with that, but hard to judge relative strength this early in the year, with the small and in some case still 0 sample sizes. No matter how you slice it, two losses in the weekend will (and should) hurt in the polls.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

I'm really struggling with how to fairly rate Harvard and Cornell, so I'll sit it out till they've played a few games.
