USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Watch out for Wisconsin next year. I feel this may be a case of underestimation.

I would agree with that assessment. Wisconsin...next to Minnesota…continues to reload with live ammo each year and has arguably the best head coach in the game. However, I would not underestimate the team with no name. They lose only one player… and they were able beat Clarkston this year without that player.;)

Who the hell is Clarkston?

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Whaaaat ?....No BU with Poulin in this list. ?. :D

Couple of things:

Back about 2 weeks ago I did post that this was Clarkson's year and I truly felt that, untillllll Ambrose went down, and then I felt that the balloon had burst.

I was a doubter, and felt a little guilt for sure. Sometimes a team gets better when they lose a very important player, since they all have to pick up there socks a little more.

I see that not many have talked about the loss of Ambrose, and would throw out there, "How would Minny had fared without a Brandt or a Bona, or Wisco without an Ammerman, or Mercyhurst without a Bestland?" Would any of these teams not made the Frozen Four in their absence? I know - purely speculative guessing. Does this mean that a loss of a very good D man can be covered up? I think it would be more difficult to cover up the loss of a goal scorer, but then again Ambrose did get 50 points or so.

Secondly, I didn't realize that Poulin still had 1 year of eligibility left. So that would definitely change how I see the pre-season poll.

Thirdly, I heard somewhere that Brittany Ammerman has 1 year left. Is this true????

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Revised with Poulin and Ammerman factored in (so I'm flakey)

1 Wisco
2 Minny
3 BC
4 Harvard
5 Cornell
6 BU
7 Clarkson
8 NU
9 RMU
10 UMD

Minnesota lost the most going into the season to graduation and Olympic centralization so they would have had problems losing a player like Brandt or Bona. Amazingly though, they still had enough forward depth to overcome that. What would have been more difficult to overcome is losing a defenseman like Ramsey or McMillen.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Back about 2 weeks ago I did post that this was Clarkson's year and I truly felt that, untillllll Ambrose went down, and then I felt that the balloon had burst.

I was 100% on the same wave length. When I saw Clarkson play in late Jan/Early February, I was really impressed, and my thought was.....Wow, these guys are ready, and will be a though out.

Next time I saw them was the ECAC semi vs Quinnipiac and I was even more impressed.

When I then saw Ambrose get helped of the ice and later on crutches, my thinking was. That hurts in a 6-0 game.

The subsequent loss the next day to Cornell reinforced my thinking, that the Ambrose injury would cost them a chance for a good run.
(And I talked to a Clarkson parent that day, who told me that Ambrose was most likely done for the year).

Boy was I wrong. They absolutely stepped up as a team, with convincing victories over BC and and Mercyhurst, and follow that up with a David over Goliath type win in the final. Epic.

My congrats go out to the team and to the coaching staff.

Had the privilege to see both Carly Mercer (Bluewater) and Jamie Lee Rattray (NCCP/Sens) play many times over the years. (Our D played against them many times in many big games over the years, including championship finals. ). They were both winners and exceptional players from an early age. Both were part of championship teams in the Minors. Carly's Bluewater team won provincials at Atom and Peewee, Jamie Lee's at Bantam and Intermediate. They both won gold with Ontario team Red. Special congrats to those two players on a fine college career.

Sorry, but reminiscing a bit myself. Our youngest daughter is graduating from college this spring and 16 years of hockey, including 7 years of following our D's in college, is coming to an end. Hard to believe. Still remember to this day our 8 year old daughter asking me, Dad can I play hockey next year, when we were on a ride home from an NHL game. That was the same winter as the Nagano Olympics. We signed her up, and the rest is history. Said young lady played in college, and is now on the west coast doing med school. Her sister followed in her footsteps, both hockey and education wise. Hockey brought us many good memories, many good friends and provided our children with a perfect venue to learn a ton of life skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

I'll be signing off soon. Given to the game in many ways as a volunteer at many levels. Time to move on and look forward to the next stage in life.

No offense, OnMAA, but this line of reasoning is all too typical among parents of female hockey players, and at least in part helps explain why interest in the game doesn't grow much beyond being a "niche sport". With too few exceptions - our Gopher team's fan base here being one of them - attendance at girls/women's games is limited to parents, relatives and friends who have a direct, personal relationship with the players. Once the players' hockey playing days are over, the majority decide to "move on" and stop going to the games.

Again, I don't mean to pick on you personally - just pointing out that your decision to leave the game behind once your daughters are done playing is (unfortunately) very typical and helps explain why attendance at most D1 games is measured in the hundreds, instead of the thousands....and we wonder why more games aren't televised?

When I said move on, meant to say, no direct involvement with the game. Does not mean I'll stop supporting, or stop going to the games, but it will be in a more limited capacity. In the past have been to many games, my kids did not play in.

I competed in different sports myself when I was young. In those years took more from those sports than I put into it. Still follow those sports. My giving back was into the sports my kids played, mostly as a coach (soccer) and administrator (hockey). I will continue to follow the sport and go to the odd games, but after 16 years of investing a lot of time, time for us as a family to focus on things we gave up on during our time in hockey. This is a normal evolution of life.

I'm also of the belief that while women's hockey at the highest level can be entertaining, it is not unlike most amateur sports, followed by a select few, and watched by many during the Olympics only. I don't think that is going to change anytime soon. The only sports were women can make a viable living seem to be the individual ones, like Tennis and Golf. That is the reality that some seem to have a hard time accepting. I'm all for some trying to make that change, but it will take many years and people heavily invested in nothing but the sport to achieve it. Not where why priorities lie at the moment.

To me you play a sport for the love of the game. Those that love it the most, and happen to be good at it, have the ability to fulfill their dreams by competing in the Olympics. If you get into the sport to get rich (like some do in sports like soccer/baseball/men's hockey etc), you are in it for the wrong reasons.

I'm the kind of person that has admiration for good athletes that are good at their craft, and work hard to achieve their goals. But I have just as much admiration for students athletes who do well in school, and are a success in life after sports, even though few would notice such achievements.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Yes. She only played about 3 games a year ago and qualifies for a medical redshirt season.

Smart move! Kenyatta Smith of the H bouncyball team elected to stay in school, rehabbed an injury for 4 months in hopes of playing in February, played exactly two minutes in one game, broke his foot, and lost an entire year of eligibility!
