USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

when conversing with TTT it is more about the smack and less about facts and rational thinking. :p
See, ARM *gets it*. It's like what Stephen Colbert calls "truthiness" --

Truthiness is a quality characterizing a "truth" that a person making an argument or assertion claims to know intuitively "from the gut" or because it "feels right" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.

Sorry -- poor transition on my part from HS to juniors, but when conversing with TTT it is more about the smack and less about facts and rational thinking. :p

TTT talks more smack at season's end as he nervously watches the WCHA's Holy Trinity toppling BC's house of cards each March.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Good to see Wisconsin down to third, though I continue to believe they should also be behind Assabet Valley.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Pokechecker Index for the week:

KRACH has been the most accurate ranking all year

1) 1-1-1-1=4 Minnesota
-------------
2) 2-2.5-2-2=8.5 Wisconsin
-------------
3) 3-2.5-5-3=13.5 Clarkson
-------------
4) 4-5-4-4=17 Cornell
-------------
5) 5-4-7-5=21 Boston College
6) 6-6-6-6=24 Harvard
-------------
7) 7-9.5-3-10.5=30 UND
-------------
8) 9-8-9-8.5=34.5 Mercyhurst
9) 10-7-10-8=35 Quinnipiac
10) 8-9.5-11-7.5=36 Robert Morse

2 of those last 3 teams will be in the NCAA, I'm betting Quinnipiac will be one of them

Wait, there's a ranking that has North Dakota in third?

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

That's.......... a bit silly I think.

Silly or not. It is based on a mathematical model. Not going to knock Rutter, as it has been proven to be a fairly accurate mathematical predictor model over the years. I think it reflects the fact that the WCHA has a strong inter conference record. It does not throw out games vs weak teams, so that is where it may skew things a bit compared to RPI etc. It just looks at Wins and Losses, not margins of victory.

Rutter does seem to be quite the outlier this year though.

. It is based on a mathematical model.

and there is your problem. As I mentioned previously in another thread, predicting human behavior based upon a mathematical model, though once in vogue, has been thoroughly discredited.

RPI, KRACH, and Rutter all just look at wins and losses, not margin of victory. And the reason RPI has to throw out games against weak teams is because it is so flawed that it wants to penalize a team for winning those games. While I don't think UND is actually the third-best team, it has defeated each of the top three, so I think NoDak is better than the 10th team, for sure.

For comparison, Robin Locke does consider margin of victory in his rankings, and he has UND at No. 4:

This will come as a surprise to actuaries.

Re: USCHO Women's Hockey Posters Poll

Carrying on with the poster's poll this week. Any lurkers around for the NCAA tournament are welcome to join in.

1) Minnesota -- Dumb

==
==
==
==
==
==

2) Clarkson -- Didn't see that coming. Still pretty close with Wisconsin.

3) Wisconsin -- Not really playing all that great lately.

4) Cornell -- Didn't see that coming. Quality title win in a quality conference.

5) Boston College -- Facepalm

6) Harvard -- I don't really have anything new to add on them this week, pretty much the same story as it has been the last few. Nothing special.

==
== Now what?
==

7) North Dakota -- Didn't expect them to beat Wisconsin. But Wisconsin seems to be in a bit of a slump. Still, really really nice win.

8) Quinnipiac -- If you didn't look at the standings every week and physically see them sitting on the tournament bubble you wouldn't have even known they were there.

9) Mercyhurst -- Dominated RIT in the loss, but it's RIT, so yeah.

10) Boston University -- Jerks.
