Re: USCHO Poster's Game, 2010- in the house that Yost Built.
For fun, I'll post some good history of Yost.
The building was originally built in 1923, designed for indoor track, football, basketball, and baseball events. I'm sure mainly practice.
If you've been there befire, picture it without stands and totally covered in a dirt floor. Oddly enough, the same structure is being built RIGHT NOW just south of Schembechler Hall. Really odd, IMHO.
If you are a track and field kind of person, a lot of indoor track events did take place here- and for any USA, USA, USA fan- you'll like to hear that Jesse Owens ran track just behind where the benches sit- where the sprints were run (I got this from Red Simmons, a LONG time track hero at Michigan). A side note- Jesse also set 4 world records in one day at the outdoor track just acorss the parking lot from Yost. There's a plaque commemorating it. Think about that- a plaque for an OSU runner. That's how important it is.
I digress.
Here's the original history website I found-

The next era was mainly Basketball- you've heard of Cazzie Russell? His play at Yost Field house enabled Chisler to be built.
The hockey team called the small Colesum on Hill home up until 1973, when they moved into Yost, now called Yost Ice Arena. It still hosts local games, but many of them moved to IcedCubed (the home of the USDP), and I was lucky enough to play intrumural hockey at Yost when I went to school here.
Some facts on the Yost site

And if you are interested in some old pictures of Yost Field House- here are some from the Ann Arbor public library- start here-

I'd be willing to wager that as a structure, Yost Ice Arena is the oldest rink. Yes, it didn't host a game until 1973, but it was built in 1923. I know most of you are not Michigan fans, but up on the second level on the north side, there are some historical pictures of Michigan's hockey teams- it's pretty amazing how little they wore back in the day. And I think they played many of their first seasons outdoors. Not sure where. One of my squirt coaches in Idaho played for Michigan (he's originally from Boston)- and was part of the early 50's championship teams.
Again, I fully appreciate that most of you are far from fans of UM, but there's a LOT of history around were we are going to play this game. One memorable weekend was that regional where OSU and MSU lined up for one of the best games I ever saw where I hated both teams. Half the faithful were agianst one, the other against the other (neither for...
). What a weekend that was.
Anyway, just want to put the site in some extra perspective.
