USA Hockey Womens U18 Select 66 Camp Invites

Re: USA Hockey Womens U18 Select 66 Camp Invites

Is this Miranda Anthony from Hill-Murray?

That would be interesting since MN isn't in the Central District. Hey, look, the purity of MN girl's high school hockey is besmirched by a prep school team with out-of-state players that plays in the state HS tournament!!! How can it be? I thought it was all for family and hometown in MN. Blasphemers.... Oh my gosh, is New England coming to MN?

Sorry - couldn't resist....

no need to apologize, HM has never been a neighborhood school, well maybe back when it was a boys school (Hill) and girls school (Murray)
I'm sure you can count the number of players over the last ten years from Maplewood on your hands, probably only need one hand

and there have been plenty of shenanigans over the years:
(the following did NOT happen at H-M , just pointing out 100% "neighborhood" schools ended with open enrollment, and even before that with various things parents could do to get their kids in another school)

a boy who eventually played for the Gophers got around a school closed to open enrollment, and in fact transferred after the season started, because of hardship, the school that wanted him hired his dad as an assistant coach, the school board is the body that determines this, yes, they won the state championship

the parents of two girls rented an apartment in the school boundary they wanted to attend, the school was closed for open enrollment, cheaper than a private school, yes, their team made it to the state tournament (can't remember if they won it while they were on the team and too lazy to look)

In spite of the smart@zz comment from a previous poster (#128) it is a legitimate question. The spelling is incorrect on the list earlier in the thread and it is Miranda Anthony (WI) on the list from the centraldistricthockey.org web site. She is from Hudson, Wisconsin which makes sense.

The "MN system" some yearn so dearly for doesn't seem so pristine after all.....

I think it was more sarcastic than smart@zz, but you say tomato....

Not sure what you mean by "pristine" but all the high schools in MN, both public and private, have to abide by the Minnesota State High School League's rules, including those involving transfers (for girls hockey the two main exceptions are SSM and the Minnesota Revolution, both of whom choose not to comply with MSHSL rules and do not play a Minnesota high school schedule). Yes, over the years there have been several high profile violations - involving both public and private schools - but the vast majority of girls playing on their respective teams are 100% eligible according to the rules.

Whatever way you define it, he was asking a legitimate question and your response was unnecessary. And instead of tomato, I say the internet and a couple of minutes of research can help with less than informed posts.

Re: USA Hockey Womens U18 Select 66 Camp Invites

I believe what the poster is referring to is the fairy tale that in Mn kids learn hockey at their neighborhood rink, with their neighborhood pals, and grow up together and eventually play for their local high school.
There was a time when that was true for 99% of the kids, and the ones that didn’t went to private schools for primarily religious reasons.

Today, while I’m sure more than 95% still do, there are plenty of kids who transfer for athletic reasons and I’d be willing to bet not every H-M player is Catholic.
Rather than more SSM type schools appearing, I think we’ll see more of the TJ Oshie situations appearing, probably the only thing stopping it now is lack of knowledge on the part of people outside MN.

I got two spare bedrooms in a school district which has produced many D1 players over the years if anyone is interested.

Don't think I ever said the question wasn't legitimate - I said it was interesting because the MN HS player lives in WI - and then added sarcasm around the fact that that defies the commonly stated perception on this forum that MN youth hockey is a "pure" environment as correctly summarized in post 135.

No responses on this forum are necessary - in fact, the whole forum really isn't necessary. So your criticism is ..... unnecessary, uninformed, and your opinion only.

Correct - the commonly yearned for (At least on this forum - see the whole related thread) idealistic MN youth hockey environment that actually doesn't really exist anymore and less and less every year.

Here's a link to a list of past girls' youth hockey winners and runner-ups. Lots of different communities are represented which runs counter to your contention that the "idealistic MN youth hockey environment that actually doesn't really exist anymore". The teams that make it to the state tournament are almost entirely made up of girls who live in these suburban communities, or small towns as the case may be.

U15A - http://www.minnesotahockey.org/page/show/2372035-15-and-under-a-2015-16-

Starting in 9th grade, the vast majority will choose to attend their local public high school in that same district, while a minority will enroll in a private school or a different public high school through open enrollment (which, space permitting, is open to all public school students, not just those who play a sport). Then once enrolled in a school, transfer rules would then apply for any student athletes wishing to attend and play for a different school, which only a very small minority of players choose to do. You can argue that the system is not "idealistic" or "pristine" or whatever, but that's the way it operates in this State.

And since you mention it, in 2015 the boys semifinal session of the state tournament did 21,600 in attendance and 19,400 for the championship. Sounds pretty fun to me. It's not dead yet.

If not for some misguided old bat's crusade a few years ago, and the girls tourney was at Ridder Arena, there would be sweat on the walls at those games and it would be impossible to get tickets.

You are construing what I said. The exception does not disprove the rule. Is it as pure as fallen snow? No, but the vast majority of kids do play for their local school. Show us a system with more involvement and more success. None are close.

People likely yearn for it because they see what it is compared to where they live.
BTW, you have two choices, you can pay someone to do it, or you can get off your butt and do it.

It wasn't the government, it wasn't the schools, it wasn't a business. All of these local hockey clubs are run by volunteers, and were started by people who loved the game and wanted their kids to have the same fun they enjoyed as a kid.

So then, based on the criteria of what you say, you would be good with posts 128, 131, 132, 136, 137 specifically being deleted? :)

Is this unusual? I would assume they would keep the same staff for a full Olympic 4 year season. No? Who are the other coaches? A mix of East coast and MN?

Also, does Johnson go to see the girls at the National camp in St Cloud or just 66 girls?

Just to add to what KTDC posted (without editorializing) last years staff was a mix of east and west as you asked and the article linked by D2D mentions that Johnson will be at St. Cloud as well.

I imagine this gig takes a decent amount of time and that many coaches are unable or unwilling to commit to a task that takes away from their actual job. That would reduce the number of willing candidates. While the sample size is too small to see if that is what they are doing having the same coach repeat would, I think, provide some continuity and predictability for the players on things like expectations and system.

Re: USA Hockey Womens U18 Select 66 Camp Invites

I would think the honor and the recruiting advantage would be substantial. Although I don't know that MN needs it but if your a coach for MN St or OSU or Penn St or Maine you would jump at the chance to do this.
