US Open Tennis

Re: US Open Tennis

Nadal is taking it to Monfils. I thought Monfils had a chance early on, but Nadal seemed to wear him down. Nadal looked beatable yesterday but he truly came back.

I think it took a LOT out of him, though. I don't expect him to win the next match.

Re: US Open Tennis

Yeah, I'd say Nadal is healthy. That was really entertaining for the first two sets. Two of the best athletes on the tour right now. Nadal just grinded Monfils down. I don't get how people can go from watching something like that to watching women's tennis.

I think the only way to beat Nadal is to be aggressive about getting into the net. Monfils was really hitting the ball from the baseline well, but Nadal can run just about anything down, and Monfils' only answer was to hit the ball harder. I can't even count how many times Monfils over-hit a ball and made the first shot, Nadal got it back, and Monfils over-hit another ball that went out. Unfortunately, nobody outside of maybe Federer, has the net game to play like that anymore.

Nadal/Gonzalez should be an interesting match. I think Gonzalez is less entertaining now that he's become a real tennis player and not just a human forehand cannon, but he can still crush the ball, and Nadal might have a tough time rebounding. He's enough of a warrior that he can grit his way through any match, but getting your legs back under you the next day is always much harder.

The Oudin/Petrova and Wozniaki/Svetwhatever matches were entertaining.

The Oudin/Petrova and Wozniaki/Svetwhatever matches were entertaining.

I watched Wozniacki/Kuznetsova. It was definitely competitive. But it's still like watching the WNBA. 10 times slower and way more limited in the types of things they can do. Kuznetsova is one of the few women that can really hit out on her forehand though.

Oudin/Wozniacki should be interesting. Wozniacki doesn't really have any weapons that can really hurt Oudin. But they both seem pretty steady and mentally tough so it should be a grindfest. I'd lean towards Oudin in this one because I think the crowd and momentum should be enough to give her an extra edge.

This has always been my reaction to women's power tennis. Women's finesse tennis, OTOH, is amazing.

Re: US Open Tennis

FWIW:
NEW YORK -- In her run to the quarterfinals of the 2009 U.S. Open, 17-year-old Melanie Oudin distinguished herself for exceptional mental toughness. Her focus and her ability to compartmentalize were further underscored by a potentially distracting domestic situation. According to records from Cobb County (Ga.) Superior Court, on July 24, 2008, Melanie's father, John Oudin, filed for divorce from Melanie's mother, Leslie. The couple were married in 1989 and have three daughters.

In his initial complaint, John Oudin filed for divorce on grounds of adultery, alleging that Leslie was "unfaithful during marriage." In her response to the complaint, dated Aug. 12, 2008, Leslie Oudin denied the allegation.

In a sworn statement made on Aug. 10, 2009, John Oudin specifically alleges his wife had been unfaithful with Melanie's coach, Brian de Villiers. "I didn't initial [sic] take any action regarding my early suspicions because I didn't want to believe my wife was having an affair with my daughter's tennis coach ... On December 29, 2007, I confronted my wife about whether she was having an affair with Brian de Villiers. I confronted Brian de Villiers separately. My wife and Brian de Villiers both admitted to me they were having an affair."

John Oudin also states in the affidavit that Melanie suspected the alleged affair. "Both [Melanie and her twin sister, Katherine] asked me point blank if I thought Mom was having an affair with Brian. When I asked why they had suspicions, Melanie told on one occasion she woke up at 1:00 a.m. in her hotel room and Leslie was not there. She called Brian's cell phone and connected with her."

Re: US Open Tennis

Nadal/Gonzalez has been a good match so far.

I would love to be able to hit a forehand as hard as Gonzalez for one day.

Re: US Open Tennis

I have been strongly against Gonzalez ever since I got stuck with one of his beatdowns at the hands of Roddick at last year's USO (and no second match since the day session ran long). But that forehand is just unbelievable.

On a personal note, I broke three strings tonight in the span of just seven games. It made me feel like a real player. ;) :D (Of course, my two racquets were at the end of their string lives and the third racquet was supplied by a friend, and it was an old Prince Pro, probably hadn't been restrung since the Clinton adminstration.)

Re: US Open Tennis

It appears that rain is about to ruin what has been a pretty exciting, well-played US Open.

Re: US Open Tennis

Gonzalez doesn't even bother to show up today -- loses all four remaining points in the second-set tiebreak and then loses 6-0 in the third. Pathetic.

So the semis are Federer-Djokovic and Nadal-Del Potro, but they won't be played until tomorrow.
