US Junior Team Part II

Re: US Junior Team Part II

And that terrible John Ramage assisted on the game winning goal. :D

Very happy for Ramage, and the team won so it proves the coaching staff was corect in their picks. It was never a player vs player thing. Simply pointing out what I saw on the fringe, based upon the other thread about how no college kids made team Canada.

Ramage should be happy and I am sure this will help his draft status. The coaching staff made the right moves in all fronts, its not all about the best players as Herbie would say.

God bless America!!!

Re: US Junior Team Part II

It reminds me of the story Herb Brooks once told about the 1960 olympics. I guess right after the game his dad turned to Herb who was the last palyer cut and said, "I guess they cut the right guy".............

In hindsight, they sure did.

Herbie ended up winning in the end and history will probably rear its ugly head again. This marathon is far from over and it will be interesting to see where it ends in 15 years. I am sure Herb Brooks liked the end result

Re: US Junior Team Part II

A couple of thoughts:
1) Was it me or was the US defense completely tentative throughout this game. I was shocked at how frequently they were afraid to passs the puck out of the defensive zone and instead tried to carry it solo out of thew zone.
2) The US went into a complete shell once they got the 2 goal lead. Hello? Remember what got you there? The defense collapsed around Campbell and gave the talented Candaian forwards unlimited time to work their magic...it was just a matter of time.
3) Stepan is quite a player, but until his goal, I thought he was invisible tonight. Watching him, I thought he played like he was hurt. Was he? Seemed very tentative to finish his checks.
4) Jerry D'Amigo is quite a player

Congrats to this team on an unbelievable win! One they will never forget....

I disagree with #2.

The US didn't go into a shell defensively until Canada got their powerplay that they cut the lead to one with.

The US was still putting pressure on and getting pucks deep before that. They outshot Canada in the time after the 5th US goal until Canada's power play. They didn't keep a forward back and kept forechecking.

That's not going into a shell. After they scored though, I agree with you completely. I was actually surprised we made it to overtime.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Remember, kids, when you're on a breakaway, be sure to keep your elbows tucked into your body. This is the most important thing ever, or you will get called for GI when you get checked into the goaltender.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

The US did start trapping (went to a 1-2-2) with a two goal lead, but that's to be expected, especially after giving up the two goal lead on New Years Eve to Canada and not trapping.

Canada was the better team over the last 25 minutes of the game, but they were playing with desperation, the home crowd and officiating that was clearly making up for three straight American PPs in the first 25 minutes.

For an American team to come out with a gold medal there after getting booed all week, then go shot for shot and skate for skate with the five-time defending champions with 15,000 fans behind them and a whole nation supporting them is an incredible achievement.

This USA team sets the gold standard for American U20 Hockey. No American U20 team has ever won Gold in Canada's house until yesterday.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

What tripped the US up in the third was that penalty. Watching the replay I thought was a real 50/50 call. There is no doubt the kid was pushed into the goalie whether or not he could have avoided running into the goalie is questionable.

Tickets are on sale for next year's tournament in Buffalo.....I will be there

BTW........One last one liner for our Canadian counterparts.....

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Canadians are in....Second place!! :D :D

When the wjc was in Boston, wasn't it in fact in Marlborough at the complex? That was the year Jack coached and they left off Paul Mara because he passed on college and went to mj

NO. I attended one of the games at the Matthews arena. I believe they played all of the games in Boston.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

I thought Jack Campbell played extremely well after coming in and facing a Canadian team that kept getting better as the game went on. Lee let in 3 goals in his first 7 SOG. When Campbell entered the game, the score was 3-3 but the shots were 21-7 USA. By the time USA took a 4-3 lead, the shots were 26-25 USA. 9 Canadian shots in the first 27 minutes of play. 27 Canadian shots in the final 33 minutes of regulation.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Hats off to the American team - they were the best team. The Canadians played like a group of individuals, whereas the Americans played together. They sounded like a great group of guys all tournament, and the cheer in the dressing room was just fine - they earned that! Good for them!

Campbell was amazing, he had such poise and the game would have been different if he'd been in from the start. I didn't really specifically notice other players standing out on the US team because they played so well as a team.

Everyone at work has been talking about the game and saying the same thing - the US deserved the win, they were the better team, and it was a great game.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Certainly one of the Top 10 days in US hockey history and the other 9 are probably wins over Canada & Soviets as well. Congrats to everyone involved. A big shout out to the NHL Network for televising the entire event including non US & Canadian games.

It will be good to go a week without having to hear people whine about the USNDT. The program works not only in the US and not only in hockey, but all over the world. Putting a country's elite athletes together and having them push and compete with each other is done in every Olympic sport all over the world.

That being said, a grassroots effort needs to be made to get a couple of hundred thousand more kids playing hockey. Especially in the South & West where the population is growing. As I've said before we need to convert rollerbladers to roller hockey players and roller hockey players to ice hockey players.

Great victory, awesome game to watch.

I don't think though that for a second it has anything to do with validating the national program. Still without question the biggest waste of 4 million dollars in all of hockey. The money would be better off by offering year round training in satalite locations in all of the top regions. Bringing in a kid like Pat Kane etc was a no brainer, a monkey could have picked the top kids for the program.

These kids were all top players before they got there and were so when they left.

Hats off to the team for a great team victory

I imagine the only person in the US even remotely unhappy right now is Joel Maturi. That ot goal cost him another $100-150 grand a year. :p

Wow, I am actually going to agree with you! The USNDT doesn't work because either they don't choose all the best players or the player chooses not to go that route. using other olympic sports is like comparing apples to oranges. The guy going out for Luge can basically only train in one spot, but a hockey player can train in many locations. Spending the money on romote training locations would be a wonderful idea.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Completely agree on point 2. They shelled up and tried to trap their way to victory. That works in D-III and sometimes in D-I, it ain't working against Canada.

It sure does work in the NHL so why wouldn't it work against the almighty team Canada?

Well isn't that thought process of going to the American Development Model?http://www.usahockey.com/ADM/
