While he is 69, I tend to think that Putin having designs on Ukraine is moreso because his popularity in Russia has slipped in the last 3-5 years and he's wagging the dog. Also, he is in the camp that believes Russia got a raw deal at the end of the Cold War and he's not getting younger. So, if Putin really is serious about trying to put some of Moscow's empire back together, he's running out of time.

Macron?s aide says he thinks Putin is deteriorating. wsj.com/articles/in-uk??

This would explain a few things.

I don't buy it...and well, I don't much trust anyone that works for Macron to have any real valuable insights on anything. I think fade is probably closer to the truth than anyone in France would be.

BTW the fact that last GOP President is openly cheering for Russia's invasion is quite interesting seeing as everyone in that party fellates Reagan for **checks notes** defeating the Russians!

I know. I do think there might be something to it. Though, I don't think it's slipping mind so much as it is the lack of contact with people, in person, which sucks for anyone but I can imagine it takes a massive toll on a former KGB officer and master manipulator.

I don't think that's it. This is right in line with Putin's grand strategy of reversing 1989. And as radical and alarming as his white papers are, they represent a coherent vision. He's trying to overturn the 20th century*, renounce both communism and liberalism, and return Russia to the authoritarian, nominally republican state Nicholas II was trying to steer towards prior to the 1905 Revolution. His whole thing is that the entire post-Czarist period of Russian history was a blind alley. He may also believe the European democracies of the 20th century are a temporary cul de sac and legitimate internationalism will always be a real politik state of nature between ethno-states like Russia, Prussia, and France in the 19th century.

* His equivalent in the US is the Federalist Society, which now controls SCOTUS.

Reagan defeated the Soviets.

These are Russians, that's different. Good white folk, being oppressed.

speaking of, have the frogs surrendered yet?

Part of me wonders if Putin wants to annex Ukraine because he wants to bolster the soccer team with Ukrainian talent…

I’m surprised we haven’t gotten any Russian bots here because they’re all over the place. Even threads on r/hockey and r/soccer have them.
