Hey if you watch Deadliest Catch you know the Russians have been crossing the border pretty frequently the past few seasons. Now we know why ;^)

The first and only time this was appropriate:

It was hilarious reading the stuff on Reddit like “what if the Chinese teamed up with the Russians? That could be worrying.”

Like assuming the combined Chinese and Russian forces with their two aircraft carriers got past the five US carrier battle groups in the Pacific and somehow navigated the waters you see in Deadliest Catch, I think the land based forces could handle it…

The military might not be needed. The Hillstrand family probably has enough ammo to do the job themselves.
Woof.

There are two ever present, Alaska involved discussions in the althistory/what if sphere of the internet and they both have really really simple answers despite many minutes of useless speculation (mostly because neither answer is very interesting for YouTube):

1. What would happen if Russia tried to take back Alaska? (A lot of Russians would die in the Bering Strait)

2. What would've happened if Russia never sold Alaska to the US? (It would've been annexed by the British at some point and become a part of Canada)

It’s true...and they are so crazy they might set their own boat on fire just top stop the Russians!
I remember thinking “man those guys are a bit out there” and then found out that they’re from Homer.

FTR, the slogan for Homer AK is “A quaint little drinking village with a fishing problem.”

I've been slowly reading a paper by Max Weber called "On the Situation of Constitutional Democracy in Russia." It's interesting in many ways, not least that Weber is a genius, but because it was written in 1906, after the failed Russian Revolution of 1905. The dramatis persona are:
  • Tsarists: reactionary defenders of a violent and brutal autocratic order
  • Bourgeois: capitalist-oriented businessmen and even the richer peasantry
  • Social democrats: reformers who want reallocation of land to the peasants and universal, equal, secret ballot suffrage
  • Agrarian conservative communists: hyper Russian Orthodox anti-Capitalist anti-Marxists who want to generalize Russian communal agrarian system directly under the Tsar and disempower the landlords and aristocrats, sort of like a Louis XIV or Napolean III regime
  • Proletarian communists: Lenin et al, see reallocation of industrial and land resources as the next evolutionary step of emancipation
The first four groups are a kaleidoscope of alliances, jumping in and out of bed with one another, trading off reforms to either forward their aims or live to fight another day, and they gradually wear each other out and discredit themselves in front of their own followers with games of real politic. Only the Tsarists and the Leninists, the latter taking a consistent hard line and refusing to negotiate with anybody, grasp there is insufficient history and infrastructure in Russia to build a post-authoritarian democratic middle class like Western Europe. The Tsarists pretend to play along, playing for time, waiting for inertia to restore their disproportionate de facto power. And it holds for 12 years until... well... \_(ツ)_/
