On another note, the amount of far left, Bernie Bro types I know spouting the Kremlin propaganda line of “this all the fault of NATO and their expansion” is way too high.

I guess I thought that was usually kicked out of the embassy. But yeah, I vaguely recall this happening (obviously not cold war) growing up.
 
We've seen arguments that Putin invaded because Ukraine is run by Nazis, and now only "white countries" are backing Ukraine for the same reason.

I honest to God can't fucking even.
 
Ukraine's ambassador to U.S. says Russia used a vacuum bomb

Russia used a vacuum bomb on Monday in its invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, said.

"They used the vacuum bomb today, which is actually prohibited by the Geneva convention," Markarova said after briefing U.S. Congress members. "The devastation that Russia is trying to inflict on Ukraine is large."

A vacuum bomb uses oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion, typically producing a blast wave of a significantly longer duration than that of a conventional explosive.

Markarova said Ukraine was working actively with the Biden administration and Congress to obtain more weapons and tougher sanctions.

"They should pay, they should pay a heavy price," she told reporters after leaving the meeting.
 
Absolutely no proof of this, but does anyone think that Poots may have been goaded into this by a 3rd party?

Along the lines of Poots being treated in the same manner he acted towards Dumpy...

Read something somewhere where someone speculated about this very thing. That maybe Xi from China kept subtly encouraging Putin's ramblings about invading Ukraine, letting him know they wouldn't have any objections, and maybe even offering his tacit support, just to see how the world would react. So he'd know what he was facing should he attempt the same re: Taiwan.

No. This is the natural evolution of Russian policy towards the Near Abroad for 20 years.

This was a miscalculation, but it was rational policy if you believe stuff a former KGBer believes about the threat to Russia from NATO and the Great Betrayal of Russia in 1989-91. Moscow is less than 300 miles from the Ukraine border, and they had already lost Poland and the Baltics.

And here's the thing: western defense experts have been completely caught off guard with how well Ukraine is doing. It looks like a TERRIBLE mistake in retrospect, but look at how Russia skated from their prior military actions in South Ossetia and Crimea. This is something like the Russo-Japanese War*. They were supposed to win easily.

* Fun fact: defeat in the Russo-Japanese War led to the Russian Revolution of 1905.

Xi was kind of who I was thinking of. Testing his own waters by observing what happens to Russia while also possibly creating someone who is 100% subservient afterwards. I wouldn't be surprised if Xi had an eye on some of Russia's energy reserves as well...
 
Crimean Muslim leaders have condemned the attack and are urging Muslims in the Russian military not to participate.
