Somebody pizzed somebody off in Russia

Per Kamil Galeev on Twitter:

Successful assassination attempt in Moscow: a car blown up on Mozhayskoye highway. A female driver died on the spot. According to yet unconfirmed news it could be Darya Dugina, the daughter of Alexander Dugin https://t.co/IAdPsCdipw

Dugin is supposedly Putin's key propaganda guy.

Republicans would love him, he believes in Replacement Theory. And this is basically the GOP Platform:

He describes himself as being a conservative: "We, conservatives, want a strong, solid state, want order and healthy family, positive values, the reinforcing of the importance of religion and the Church in society". He adds: "We want patriotic radio, TV, patriotic experts, patriotic clubs. We want the media that expresses national interests".

Cmon Russia, you've already won the GOP over, no need to also remind them of the time you teamed up with Nazis.

Good call.

Stalin and Molotov bought the Soviets time to crank up their war machine, at the expense of many lives in other Slavic countries, and they still almost lost to the Nazis. Despite all the centuries of talk about Slavic brotherhood, Moscow has always viewed the Poles and the Czechs as expendable when push comes to shove. So is it any wonder why those countries looked to ally with the West after the Cold War ended?

Exactly what the Brits did in Munich.

*Wikipedia rabbit holes*

Jesus. The details that get missed when you're only given 45 minutes for 32 weeks to cover US and US involved World events from 1865 to the Millenium in high school.

No wonder the pacifists told Ukraine to "just cede territory to Russia to avoid future conflict." Because *that* worked so well in the past. I really hope the "never forget!" crowd realizes that times like now in Ukraine are when we shouldn't forget how sideways sh** went long before the US was dragged kicking and screaming into the Second World War conflicts (which had been cooking for half a decade at that point), and only because we got ticked off by a third party.

Interesting:

Russian military leadership may be shifting to a new phase of mobilization in central Russia and have likely exhausted pools of potential recruits in more peripheral and disenfranchised regions.

That's how civil unrest starts.

The counteroffensive has started.

The big picture: Lacking the numerical advantages typically needed for a successful offensive, Ukraine may focus on cutting off Russia’s forces in Kherson, rather than attempting to steamroll them.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered no hints in an address on Monday evening, insisting that Russian forces would be expelled from Ukraine, but adding, “You won’t hear specifics from any truly responsible person. Because this is war.”
  • Even if Ukraine does proceed cautiously, the offensive likely marks the start of a third phase of the war, following Russia’s initial three-pronged assault and the grinding battle in the Donbas.
What to watch: Another twist could come within days if Russia announces a sham referendum in Kherson as a pretext to annexing the territory into Russia, as Kirby has warned might happen.
  • Russia has already installed a puppet government, restricted the internet, mandated the use of the ruble, and started issuing Russian passports.
  • The latest: Russian investigators confirmed today that a former Ukrainian lawmaker who defected to join that puppet government had been murdered in his home.

This is an ally whose government we prop up.

A Saudi court has sentenced a woman to 45 years in prison for allegedly damaging the country through her social media activity, according to a court document obtained Wednesday. It was the second such sentence that has drawn scrutiny of the kingdom this month.

Little is known about Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani, who hails from one of the biggest tribes in Saudi Arabia and has no apparent history of activism. An official charge sheet seen by The Associated Press and human rights groups describes her case as involving her social media use, though Saudi officials did not respond to requests for comment.

The sentence follows international outcry over a similar 34-year prison sentence handed down to Salma al-Shehab, a Saudi doctoral student at Leeds University in England.

Earlier this month, a specialized criminal court delivered the 45-year sentence under the kingdom’s broad counterterrorism and cybercrime laws. That court, which normally handles political and national security cases, gave the sentence during Ms. al-Qahtani’s appeal of her earlier conviction.

Judges accused Ms. al-Qahtani of "disrupting the cohesion of society" and "destabilizing the social fabric," according to the charge sheet, citing her activity on social media. They alleged that Ms. al-Qahtani "offended the public order through the information network."

Our Dumpies should relocate there. They'd be so happy with a real strongman with rock ribbed religious convictions and none of that human rights "red tape."

End the Right.
Save the world.

Ukrainian counter offensive continues.

Ukrainian Counteroffensives (Ukrainian efforts to liberate Russian-occupied territories)

Ukrainian military officials reiterated that Ukrainian forces continued targeting Russian logistics and reinforcements and maintained operational silence on the progress of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in southern Ukraine on September 1. Deputy Chief of the Ukrainian Main Operational Department Oleksiy Gromov stated that Russian losses are currently concentrated due to a series of Ukrainian missile, air, UAV, and artillery strikes on Russian command posts, positions, and ammunition depots between August 29 and August 31.[17]

The Ukrainian Southern Operational Command reported that Ukrainian forces destroyed a pontoon bridge over the Inhulets River in Darivka, about 18km northeast of Kherson City and situated on the Kherson City-Nova Kakhovka highway.[18] Ukrainian forces have particularly targeted pontoon crossings since August 29, likely to tactically disrupt Russian forces and support ongoing Ukrainian offensive operations.[19] The Ukrainian Southern Operational Command also noted that Ukrainian forces struck six ammunition depots in the Bersylavsky and Khersonsky Raions (Districts) in Central Kherson Oblast, and Hennichensky Raion, near the eastern Kherson Oblast-Crimea border.[20] Ukrainian forces also reportedly destroyed command posts of the Russian 331st Guards Airborne Regiment of the 98th Guards Airborne Division and the 56th Airborne Assault Regiment of the 7th Guards Mountain Air Assault Division in unspecified areas.[21] The 331st Regiment previously operated near Hostomel, Kyiv Oblast, in February and March and suffered significant losses, and Ukrainian military officials stated that Ukrainian forces previously struck the unit’s command post south of the Kherson-Dnipropetrovsk Oblast border in Novovoskresenke on August 23.[22] It is unclear if Ukrainian forces struck the 331st Regiment’s command post in Novovoskresenke or another location.

Ukrainian forces likely continued to strike Russian ground lines of communication (GLOCs) and key positions throughout central Kherson Oblast on September 1. Local Ukrainian civilians reported hearing explosions and witnessing active air defense systems in Nova Kakhovka and Kakhovka (approximately 12km northeast of Nova Kakhovka), and social media footage showed new Ukrainian strikes against the Antonivsky Bridge.[23] The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Russian forces shot down Ukrainian AGM-88 HARM missiles over Antonivsky Bridge.[24] A Ukrainian Telegram channel reported that a Ukrainian missile hit an unspecified target in Oleshky (about 9km southeast of Kherson City on the left bank of the Dnipro River), and that Russian air defense systems shot down a Ukrainian missile over Kalanchak (about 67km due south of Kherson City).[25] A Ukrainian Telegram channel also published footage of a reported destroyed Russian military base in Shyroka Balka, about 35km west of Kherson City.[26] Geolocated footage also showed the destruction of a Russian military base in the former barracks of the Ukrainian National Guards in Kherson City, likely destroyed during a Ukrainian strike on August 29.[27] Ukrainian Telegram channels have also reported Russian forces transporting more barges to Nova Kakhovka, likely in an attempt to facilitate cross-river transportation in the area.[28]
