Re: Unrest in Egypt

Weird how the police are involved in the violence while the military isn't doing anything.

And Suleiman was sworn in as VP, not president.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Mubarak is done. He just doesn't know it yet.

Yup...with the amount of people still protesting despite the curfew, with the news still getting out despite the internet shutdown there is no way this ends well for him.

And I am sorry but the U.S. should be 100% behind the people on this. Is there a possibility it could lead to a bad leader, of course. But this is people fighting for their rights as citizens, looking for liberty. I always thought that was what this country stood for, not hedging our bets in the hopes that whoever wins likes us. When did we become the kid with self-esteem issues just looking for anyone who will be our friend?

Mubarak may have been an ally but he has no right to rule for life and if the people want him out so be it. Let the Egyptians decide what kind of government they want, that is what they are asking and Americans and our President should be applauding that openly and LOUDLY!

LPC: Now. What is described as heavy automatic fire at Mubarak residence.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Looters got into the museum...destroyed cabinets of artifacts and a few mummies...that makes sad :(

I am glad I saw it all last year before this :(

I have no evidence of this, but my guess is these "looters" are government thugs out to give the protesters a bad name. A bigger problem is if these thugs start attacking the military leaving them no choice but to open fire.

The real question would be when hasn't America and any other nation ever not backed factions that would benefit them the most?

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Listening to AJ and reading the Jan25voices it becomes apparent what the government's plan is...

Send in thugs (plainclothes police?) to loot, spread fear among the protesters that their property will be looted (maybe that their family is in danger) and the protesters go home to protect them. The sea of people winnows and becomes much more manageable.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

I know but I was trying to be less cynical :D

I'm pretty sure the United States used up all her revolutionary luck when Washington turned down the oppurtunity to become King George I of America.

Therefore, we're never a fan of them.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Has anyone heard anything about Americans in Egypt at this time? My niece is in Cairo for a semester and the internet shutdown and lack of cell service has cut off our family's contact with her.

That sounds about right these days :/

Re: Unrest in Egypt

I thought they had a bunch of youths surrounding the museum to protect it?

They were protecting it with a human chain last night; today the military is guarding it.

AJ is confirming that these "thugs" have government-issued weapons and are attacking in the suburbs.

The video they showed about twenty minutes ago (from earlier today) told it all. A military guy was on a megaphone in the middle of the protests pleading with people to obey the curfew so they can stop the "thugs" since they have no idea who is good and who is bad. He went so far as to say if the people can do that he will take off his uniform and fight along side them.

This is going to be a complete coup...get your guillotine ready because Mubarak must be the Egyptian word for Louis :p
