University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

I'll give you St. Louis, Thomas, Sharp and LeClair but you've got to be kidding if you think Perrin, Stahlberg and Mitchell were or are impact players. Stahlberg may turn out to be a very good player but that remains to be seen. Perrin was okay, not great. Mitchell? C'mon. I realize you are a 'Cats fan but take off your rose colored glasses for a moment okay?

The Lowell fan's consistent comments that his squad is equal to Vermont is a case of him being in fantasy land. UVM's number of All Americans, Hobey finalists, a pair of Frozen Fours (recently, too) puts UVM light years ahead of a team that is coming off a conference first round elimination and a fortunate first round victory. UML will be better than UVM this year, probably by a lot, but unless UML finds itself in Pittsburgh in April (no chance), he has no ground to stand on.

I have to go on the other teams boards (BC, BU, Wisconsin, etc) and see if he thinks Lowell's better than them, too

To be fair its not all Lowell fans, just a couple whose team-crush on the Cats just wont let them stay away.

What else is there to do in beautiful downtown Lowell ? I guess being a tool eases the pain.

To get this back on track (and not to troll) ... serious question, not sure if it was already discussed. With Girgensons departure, is there any chance that one of your 2013 recruits (Forgione?) comes in early? Or are they just going to pass the scholarship money that was saved out amongst current players?

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

And hows the rest of the incoming class look now with everyone we have left? Hows it look compared to everyone else in Hockey East?

RUMORMILL: Kevin Roy decommitted from Brown and UVM may be in the hunt to pick him up. Was leading scorer in the USHL last season, drafted by Anaheim in the 4th round, and is from the Montreal area. Would be a nice replacement for "what's his name"..

Wow, I hope you're right about that. We could really use something to go our way for a change!

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Hi Everyone. I'm a long time Cats fan but first time poster. I was looking at last year's roster and couldn't help but notice 9 of 28 players (just about 1/3) were from either PA or CT. Now that Penn State and UConn are building legitimate D1 programs in major conferences you have to think an already tough recruiting environment is about to get even tougher for UVM. I wonder if the recent emphasis on Players from western Canada has anything to do with this?

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

FYI, here's a very recent article about Kevin Roy:

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/jr...ul-kevin-roy-pretty-much-rules-175118462.html

It says he's probably looking to play for a "marquee NCAA team," which would seemingly preclude UVM as a choice. This seems like a real long shot at best. What we have going for us is an available scholarship and close proximity to his home in Quebec. Who knows, maybe he's a Marty St. Louis fan and would want to follow in his footsteps. We can hope.....

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Here's another piece of grist for the Roy mill.. http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/2012/7/23/3177972/is-wisconsin-a-potential-fit-for-kevin-roy

Agree it's probably a long shot given the last 2 single-digit win seasons. One intriguing wrinkle is that Roy has a brother who is a goalie and also decommitted from Brown and speculation is they may be looking for a "package" deal. With the Cats goalie situation up in the air at best, maybe its a possibility..

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

In the Providence Journal article Roy says he's gotten a lot of calls. I don't know how well Sneddon knows Martin St. Louis, but if I were Sneddon, I'd do whatever I could to have him give Roy a call, as one Quebec native to another (meaning Province of Quebec). Or Mike Gilligan could encourage St. Louis to call. After Girgensons and Deluca, we need this bad!

Doubtful that Marty is going to start recruiting people... at least just yet. That would be where a former Olympian, (almost) Stanley Cup wining, retired NHL defenseman, and local business owner maybe very useful.

True. Miller would be a huge asset if he's willing to do this sort of thing, but Marty's got the "French Connection." That's what would make him perfect for this particular job.

According to the article VTinNY provided a link to, "Roy is from Greenfield Park, QC", which is also where our old friend Torrey Mitchell is from. Maybe Marty, Aaron, and Torrey can all give him a call.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

UVM has had success getting players late that had a change of plans at other schools. However was it Sneddon or Mich that did that? I think we need our former Alumni to help out as we are down an assistant coach and coming off of 2 tough years a call from St. Louis and Mitchell and Miller could really help right now.

As for assistant coaches we have lost 2 good players this summer and part of an assistants job is to keep those kids committed after they commit! Lets get Kevin Patrick or Kyle Wallack hired ASAP to make sure we keep all our currents recruits and start looking for more.

Really don't see any former player doing Sneddon a favor and making a phone call to a recruit. That's murky water and is probably a NCAA violation, particularly if any of them have given money to the athletic department (even if it's $1). UVM needs some good luck, but they don't need to do it illegally....

If he could have, Marty would have told the kid to stay at Brown if Roger Grillo was still there. That's his guy.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Guys, try to keep in mind that alumni who are not paid members of a college's coaching staff, are no longer allowed to aid in the recruiting process by communicating with a recruit about that college's hockey (or any other sport) program.

While this wasn't the case during most of the past century, it is now. Be careful what you wish for.
