University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Hire a guy who was fired from a USHL team for "team unrest"? Hmm...add in the fact that UVM is taking on two of his players who have off-ice issues. That would go over well. http://www.indystar.com/article/201...a-Ice-fire-coach-general-manager-Kyle-Wallack

I think its fair to point out that junior hockey is a different animal altogether...it truly is the wild west. Also, he was a HC in Indy and would be an AC at his next spot, which is a role he is more experienced and seemingly comfortable in. I don't know what happened in Indy - heard lots of rumors, but I don't know. What I do know is that its almost August and UVM just lost their top recruit and their recruiting coordinator. Wallack can certainly recruit. Look what he did at Yale, Qpac, Holy Cross, etc...

Apparently UVM has some issues culturally given the lawsuit and their recent finishes (which your comment seemingly refers to). That said, you're never going to change the culture of a team unless you bring in an entirely new staff. Because thats not happening the only other way to get good is to recruit a lot of talent and that is what Wallack does best.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Rob Madore has signed a two-way contract (AHL/ECHL) with the Charlotte Checkers. Likely will back up John Muse

Poetic :D

Where's midge??? :p

The Gionta bros...good call, I would not put little nate in that group....at least not yet, correct me if I am wrong but he has been pro for 3 years? Not a full season yet, average numbers at best? No not yet!

No, not great numbers, but he's "made it". 64 games two years ago not including all 7 playoff games and 62 games this past year. He's had some injuries. If he can stay healthy, he'll be a 35-40 point scorer. He's also locked up for the next two years at around $1.5 million per.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

That wasn't an upset, at least not to anyone who knows a thing about college hockey. But still, excellent prediction!

And since taking your opinion on things hasn' worked so well in the past, I decided to look up both schools NCAA history - ya know, just for giggles.

Vermont: D1 (39 seasons) - 5 NCAA appearances. D2 (10 seasons) - 0 NCAA appearances.
Lowell: D1 (28 seasons) - 4 NCAA appearances. D2 (17 seasons) - 5 NCAA appearances, 3 National Titles

Once again, spot on. That extra NCAA appearance in 11 more seasons (completley dismissing the Division 2 stuff) is as total and complete domination as I've seen. Astounding. Seriously, I had to take a knee after reading those stats. I should have been genuflecting to Vermont all this time.

As for head-to-head, Lowell leads 10-9-4 since Vermont came into Hockey East. (neither team being able to sweep the other during each team's historically bad season btw, which I found amusing)

I guess we'll see where the teams stand this season on Oct. 12, when Vermont opens up the regular season in Lowell.

This has to be the dumbest thought ever put online. The only thing most laughable than a Lowell fan talking smack to ANYONE'S program is the thought of comparing championships at a lower division. Lowell wins a tourney game and suddenly they are a cross between Boston College and the Detroit Red Wings. Good laughs here.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Onion Man, you forgot...they have Scott Wilson.

Agreed...........

It's true, but please, it's Hockey East Rookie of the Year Scott Wilson. Thanks.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Gerbe has played in more than 11 times the number of NHL games that Stephen Gionta has.

Ha ha, Stephen, of course, I guess my point was I would not mention him in the same breath as St. Louis and Fleury. I gotta give little nate credit, he has really cleaned up his game since turning pro!

I believe you're the one who said the following:

UVM has a much stronger history than Lowell does (or ever will have).

Knowing your penchant for spouting off mindless drivel, I decided to look it up. Low and behold, you're still an idiot. So I put up both team's NCAA histories to highlight the facts: by my calculation, and stop me if these concepts are too big for you to understand, UVM has made one more tournament (Division I, since we're not talking Division II) appearance than Lowell, despite playing DI for 11 more seasons. Where's "the much stronger history" you spoke of? No? Just making things up as you go? Ahhhh, I understand. Point of information: is it painful to be that stupid, or have years of practice deadened you to it?

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

A good sign of a quality program is having your assistants in demand. It stinks to lose them but if you never had your assistant
get a head coaching job how good could he really be?

And please Patrodick keep up with the bragging about your awesome program....kinda like a guy at Mcdonalds bragging because
he got moved from mopping floors to fries.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Uh, Micheletto wasn't really "in demand". One team was interested and he was about the 10th choice. Nobody wanted the job.

That is true. But still, it's a good opportunity for him, and you can't fault a guy for trying to move up in life.

(p.s., I'm not saying you fault him for trying)

This is just stupid, but since you insist.....

UVM has played in two Frozen Fours and had two close brushes with the national championship game--one game losing a lead late in the 3rd period to the eventual national champs, and the other losing in the second overtime only because of a brutal missed call on a clear hand pass. And how bout we also talk about players who have had an impact in the NHL in recent years:
  • Martin St. Louis
  • Tim Thomas
  • Patrick Sharp
  • John Leclair
  • Aaron Miller
  • Viktor Stalberg
  • Eric Perrin
  • Torrey Mitchell
Those are the players I can think of--I'm probably missing others.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Kreider was good at BC and is a hell of a skater but Girgensons is a much more physical presence on the ice and therefore is ready for the pro game earlier than Krieder was

And Girgensons would likely have had a greater presence on the D1 ice as a result. He is a wrecking ball in addition to skills and defensive tenacity

What bothers me most about this is the essential loss of a scholarship athlete for the season which starts in less than two months.

There has to be someone that York bumped back a year or that Parker dismissed for missing non-mandatory practices that we can pick up.

I'll give you St. Louis, Thomas, Sharp and LeClair but you've got to be kidding if you think Perrin, Stahlberg and Mitchell were or are impact players. Stahlberg may turn out to be a very good player but that remains to be seen. Perrin was okay, not great. Mitchell? C'mon. I realize you are a 'Cats fan but take off your rose colored glasses for a moment okay?

Given the obvious potential for this problem occurring, you would think the coaching staff had a backup plan to accelerate someone early. No?

Yeah, you'd think. Maybe Anthony Deluca was the player Sneddon planned to accelerate early.
