University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Roy would be a nice fit and partially make up for the disappointing defections of Deluca and Girgensons. He sounds like the spitting image of Deluca but even more prolific on the stat sheet. He is not going to replace the Girgensons physicality. But he could make a hell of a name for himself at UVM like Martin St. Louis and Eric Perrin did. The fans could use another small dynamo to rally around. And UVM is certainly comparable academically to Wisconsin and much closer for his family to come see the games. Seems like a great fit to me. I'm ready to cheer for him.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Apparently Mike McMahon said somewhere that NU is the favorite for the Roys'. No idea what's going on.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Maybe once the kids and the parents check out UVM they will change their minds.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

ok, enough with the waiting, let's get this Roy brothers announcement out of the way one way or another.

The way I view it is they ain't comin here. Thus, they can take as much time as they see fit.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Why do you think they are not coming here? It makes sense that they do come here for the following reasons:

1. close to home, their parents can come to every home game if they desire, like St. Louis's and Perrin's used to do.
2. We have a full ride available due to Girgensons signing with Buffalo.
3. We can use more depth at goalie, I don't think that Vazzano will get another start. he looked awful in his one start last year against Maine. That was desperation. Granted, having three freshmen goalies is not ideal when they all potentially depart at once, but it's not a deal breaker by any stretch. I reiterate that we could use the depth, and the goalie could also redshirt a year
4. It's a good school with tougher academic requirements than many
5. We are generating an increasing reputation for recruiting draft picks and developing NHL talent. Brickley and Paliotta are likely future NHL'ers already on the squad. Possibly Fallon also.

Agree nobody should get your hopes up but i think it;s at least a good chance they end up at UVM.

On another topic - any news on the assistant coach search?

Nice to see an article today on Twitter that Paliotta is not going to Junior's. That rumor continued to circulate on this Board off and on.

Actually, my post was something I keep telling myself, so as not to get my hopes up. In truth, I think UVM would be a perfect fit for some of the same reasons you cite--i.e., the proximity of UVM to their home in Quebec, and the fact that we have a full scholarship available now that Girgensons isn't coming. And the goalie situation is actually better than you described in terms of the possibility of this working out. You're forgetting that Vezzano transferred--thus, right now we have two freshman goalies and that's it, so we could certainly use some more depth at that position.

The fact that this makes so much sense is kinda scary. I think if we had a state-of-the-art rink and facilities to woo them with, it would be a done deal.

It's definitely NU or Vermont IMO. Vermont has goalie space and is close to home. They have a full scholarship. NU has a scholarship with all the early departures this offseason (Quailer, the Daniels, Gillies, Eibler, Bitetto), they already have three goalies but two are seniors so Derick would have a spot at least next season and Gillies is gone anyway. Keefe recruited them to Brown and now he's gotta have the most influence on them coming to NU. I'd take multi-million renovated Matthews as a facility as a player over the Gutt but it's not like either is Agganis.

Interesting to see where they go. The Lincoln Stars blogger heard about Roy to Nu back in Spring.

Yeah, what you say makes sense. Despite the fact that I think they'd be a perfect fit for UVM, my gut is telling me it's not going to happen. Not to whine too much, but we really haven't had much go our way since Viktor Stalberg announced he wouldn't be returning for his senior year after our FF appearance in 2009. This would change all that.....

It hasn't gone right in Burlington or on St. Botolph. We lost the best coach we've had since Fernie. We lost Gaudreau who of course is filthy, we lost Oleksiak after his freshman year, we lost the commitment of Ryan Johansen who ended up going #4 in the 2010 draft (granted we were lucky to get him committed at 16 in the first place) and now we are basically starting over.

Yeah, you guys could use this as much as us. Well, you know what's gonna happen then, right? They're going to announce they've chosen BC or BU, and the rich will get richer. Someone who knows Kevin Roy was quoted in an article saying he wanted to play for a "marquee" program. Depending on one's definition of marquee, that might preclude both UVM and NU.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

sounding desparate (borderline pathetic)

I read that blog and don't remember Yeti going out with such a controversial statement. I'm pretty sure that I would have remembered that. In fact, he hasn't mentioned Roy at all recently. Some of those who tweet/comment have brought up the subject. Perhaps it was a different blog that you read.

I concur. Unless I missed it Tim (Yeti) never mentioned a team.

Lincoln Stars Blog ‏@blackblueblog

@ChrisDilks To be honest, I first heard the news way back in Feb/March. Kept it quiet until just recently.

Lincoln Stars Blog ‏@blackblueblog

@ChrisDilks I take that back. It was actually May that I first started to hear the rumblings of Roy and Northeastern.

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

UVM has John Vazzano still as a fifth year senior/graduate year as he got a NCAA redshirt for one year that he did not play or something like that. But he will not play any meaningful time in the net.

I like UVM's campus and proximity to Quebec way over NU but have to give NU the Keefe connection. It probably comes down to how hot the girls they see on campus during their visits.... That could go either way. Today would be a good day for a UVM visit, great summer we are having!

Really? I didn't know that. Well that's better than nothing. At least he can maybe challenge the freshmen in practice and give them some idea what it's like to play at the D1 level.

Perhaps. I must say that NU has an amazing selection. If that's not enough for the lad, bu and bc have nothing to be embarrassed about in that area. The bu hockey players - nah, i won't go there.;)

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

Would have been nice for Girgensons to state that his decision took into consideration the facilities and how that they would not provide for an optimum environment for career advancement. Hoping that KRoy chooses UVM, but at some point the facilities need a little fire (NOT LITERALLY!) to move them forward so these kids don't need to consider that aspect of their UVM experience...

Re: University of Vermont off-season thread, ( Let the Zemgus Girgensons Era Begin! )

New UVM president seems more worried about Academic facilities than the hockey and BB arena. It's going to fall largely on alumni or other donor money to make it happen. But it CAN and will happen eventually and then we will see what a great facility can do to an already supportive fan base for both programs.
